Background: This study evaluated the efficacy of a single instillation of pirarubicin with a short retention time for preventing intravesical recurrence of low-risk non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer.

Patients And Methods: We analyzed 165 patients with low-risk non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer who underwent transurethral surgery. Single instillation of pirarubicin with 15-min retention time immediate after surgery was performed in 47 (28%) patients.

Fishmeal substitutes (such as insect-based feeds) in pig diets can promote sustainable pork production. Insect powders contain chitin, a nitrogen-containing indigestible material, and pigs must have the capacity to secrete chitin-degrading enzymes to benefit from these diets. The chitin-degrading enzyme (acidic mammalian chitinase; AMCase) and its gene expression have been detected in the stomach tissue of approximately 6-month-old fattening pigs; however, it remains unclear from which stage chitin-degrading enzymes are secreted.

Introduction: Inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion syndrome can be a serious adverse event of cisplatin-based chemotherapy. Cisplatin had to be changed to other drugs or chemotherapy completely discontinued in earlier reported cases.

We report a case of drug-induced interstitial lung disease as a result of combined androgen blockade. A 75 year-old male was receiving bicalutamide and reuprorelin acetate treatment for advanced prostate cancer. We report here two cases of Waldenstrom's macroglobulinemia (WM), one with central nervous system (CNS) symptoms and severe retinopathy and one with renal failure. In both cases, the serum IgM levels exceeded 3,000 mg/dL and monoclonal IgM-kappa was observed in the blood. At onset, Case 1, a 63-year-old female, developed CNS symptoms-namely, drowsiness and syncope.

The hydrophobic plant cell wall, large acidic central vacuole, diverse secondary compounds, intercellular airspaces, and rigid starch granules present obstacles to ultrastructure preservation and specimen sectioning. We describe modifications of fixation and embedding procedures successfully used with microbes, protists, and mammalian tissues that have overcome these obstacles. Vacuum infiltration is used to remove intercellular air rapidly replacing it with fixative and buffer preserving cellular ultrastructure while neutralizing the acidic vacuole.

We developed a novel method for rapid screening of carbohydrate-protein interactions using poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) channels statically coated with hydrophobically modified hydroxyethylcellulose (HM-HEC). We found that a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) of HM-HEC on a PMMA surface intact by water allows rapid and reproducible separations of glycan samples using a 20 mM phosphate without HM-HEC. The underlying mechanism for dynamic and static coatings on the PMMA surface is discussed.

We constructed Toyoda cutaneous ureterostomy with fixation between the anterior and posterior rectus sheath by four interrupted sutures to maintain the stability of the abdominal wall tunnel for the ureters. After the operation, the stent catheters were placed in the renal pelvis through the stoma, and exchanged every 4 weeks. The stent catheters were removed 3 months after the operation, because the stomal conditions were unstable and obstructive in the early phase after the operation.

Euglena complex chloroplasts evolved through secondary endosymbiosis between a phagotrophic trypanosome host and eukaryotic algal endosymbiont. Cytoplasmically synthesized chloroplast proteins are transported in vesicles as integral membrane proteins from the ER to the Golgi apparatus to the Euglena chloroplast. Euglena chloroplast preprotein pre-sequences contain a functional N-terminal ER-targeting signal peptide and a domain having characteristics of a higher plant chloroplast targeting transit peptide, which contains a hydrophobic stop-transfer membrane anchor sequence that anchors the precursor in the vesicle membrane.

Isocitrate lyase and malate synthase are specific enzymes of the glyoxylate cycle, used here as glyoxysomal markers. Secondary endosymbiosis describes the origin of plastids in several major algal groups such as dinoflagellates, euglenoids, heterokonts, haptophytes, cryptomonads, chlorarachniophytes and parasites such as apicomplexa. An integral part of secondary endosymbiosis has been the transfer of genes for plastid proteins from the endosymbiont to the host nucleus. Targeting of the encoded proteins back to the plastid from their new site of synthesis in the host involves targeting across the multiple membranes surrounding these complex plastids.

It is important to know responses of the pathogenic fungi to reactive oxygen species by which hosts protect themselves against fungal infection. In the present study, sensitivities to the superoxide radical (O2-) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) were compared between a wild-type parent strain and a respiration-deficient mutant of Candida albicans. When their survival was examined on an agar medium containing an intracellular O2- generator, paraquat (PQ), the parent strain was selectively killed by increasing the PQ concentration.
