We present the first successful trapping of single erbium atoms in an array of optical tweezers. Using a single narrow-line optical transition, we achieve deep cooling for direct tweezer loading, pairwise ejection, and continuous imaging without additional recoil suppression techniques. Our tweezer wavelength choice enables us to reach the magic trapping condition by tuning the ellipticity of the trapping light.

There is complex underlying pathophysiology with further derailment likely caused by acute cardiovascular changes associated with surgery. The implications for post-operative recovery are unclear, particularly in frail and older patients.

However, electronic spins are more sensitive to magnetic noise, but engineering of their spectroscopic properties, for example, using clock transitions and isotopic engineering, can yield remarkable spin coherence times, as for electronic spins in GaAs, donors in silicon and vacancy centres in diamond. Here we demonstrate simultaneously induced clock transitions for both microwave and optical domains in an isotopically purified Yb:YSiO crystal, reaching coherence times of greater than 100 μs and 1 ms in the optical and microwave domains, respectively.

The need for systemic anticoagulation is a relative contraindication for patients with bleeding risks, especially in multitraumatic injury.
Methods: We describe a case series of four trauma patients with ARDS who were managed with ECMO admitted to the neuro critical care unit at Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge (UK), from January 2000 to January 2016.
Background: Patients undergoing pulmonary lobectomy carry a high risk of respiratory complications after surgery. The postoperative prophylactic treatment with helmet CPAP may prevent postoperative acute respiratory failure and improve the P(aO(2))/F(IO(2)).
Methods: We randomly allocated 50 subjects to receive continuous oxygen therapy (air-entrainment mask, F(IO(2)) 0.
Background: We tested the hypothesis that ultrasound (US) guidance may reduce the minimum effective anesthetic volume (MEAV(50)) of 1.5% mepivacaine required to block the sciatic nerve with a subgluteal approach compared with neurostimulation (NS).
Methods: After premedication and single-injection femoral nerve block, 60 patients undergoing knee arthroscopy were randomly allocated to receive a sciatic nerve block with either NS (n = 30) or US (n = 30).
In this prospective, randomised, observer-blinded study we evaluated whether ultrasound guidance can shorten the onset time of popliteal sciatic nerve block as compared to nerve stimulation with a multiple injection technique. Forty-four ASA I-III patients undergoing posterior popliteal sciatic nerve block with 20 ml of 0.75% ropivacaine were randomly allocated to nerve stimulation or ultrasound guided nerve block.

Methods: Fifty-six patients were enrolled. Patients were randomly allocated to the "forced-air group" (forced-air system) or to the "heating-blanket group" (resistive heating under-patient blanket).
Background: The complexity of pain from laparoscopic cholecystectomy and the need for treating incident pain provide rationale for multipharmacological analgesia. We investigated the preoperative administration of controlled-release (CR) oxycodone as transition opioid from remifentanil infusion for pain after laparoscopic cholecystectomy.
Methods: Fifty consecutive patients undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy were randomly, double-blindly assigned to treatment group (n=25, CR oxycodone: 1 h before surgery and 12 h after the first administration) or to the control group (n=25, placebo: administered at the same intervals).
Background And Objectives: Radical prostatectomy is at high risk for intraoperative and postoperative bleeding due to surgical trauma, release of urokinase and tissue type plasminogen activator. We conducted this prospective, observational multi-centre study to assess the degree of systemic fibrinolysis or hypercoagulation in the perioperative period. We studied serial changes in standard laboratory values and in thrombelastographic (TEG; Haemoscope Corporation, Skokie, IL, USA) parameters including lysis at 30 and 60 min (LY-30, LY-60), alpha-angle (alpha) and maximum amplitude.

The micropolarization filters retain the original extinction ratios of the unpatterned thin film. The measured extinction ratios on the micropolarization filters are approximately 1000 in the blue and green visible spectrum and approximately 100 in the red spectrum.

In the present study, the metric and morphological variations associated with sexual maturation are defined in 155 Sardinian girls (10-17 years) and the role of some potentially influential variables is discussed: age, age at menarche and time since menarche. We studied thirty-eight anthropometric variables, the fat-free mass and the fat mass estimated by Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis.

The interaction of [3H] (-)sulpiride with D2 dopamine (DA) receptors in the striatum, anterior pituitary and medial-prefrontal cortex was studied in rats, using an improved [3H] (-)sulpiride radioreceptor binding technique. Incubation on ice and a fast filtration resulted in higher specific binding (approximately 85% of total binding) a lower affinity constant (about 3 nM) and higher Bmax than reported with previous procedures. Pharmacological interactions confirmed the high selectivity of [3H] (-)sulpiride for D2 DA receptors.

The authors assessed clinical, radiological, microbiological, and biohumoral parameters before and after treatment to provide a basis for assessing test product effectiveness and tolerability. On the strength of their findings, the authors concluded that the clinical and bacteriological activity of sulbenicillin was satisfactory and its local and general tolerability was excellent.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFA double-blind, multi-centre trial was carried out in 72 patients with acute or chronic infections of the lower respiratory tract to compare the efficacy and tolerance of a sulfamethopyrazine (200 mg)/trimethoprim (250 mg) combination with that of the established combination co-trimoxazole (400 mg sulphamethoxazole plus 80 mg trimethoprim). Patients received treatment for 10 days either with 2 capsules of co-trimoxazole twice daily or in the newer combination group with 2 capsules on Day 1 but then only 1 capsule daily for the remainder of the treatment period. The results of clinical, bacteriological and functional tests showed an excellent or good response in over 90% of patients in each group.
