Arbovirus surveillance in South Carolina, 1996-98.

Arboviruses isolated and identified from mosquitoes in South Carolina (USA) are described, including new state records for eastern equine encephalitis virus (EEE), St. Louis encephalitis virus (SLE), Flanders virus, Tensaw virus (TEN), and a variant of Jamestown Canyon virus (JC). Mosquitoes were collected at 52 locations in 30 of 46 South Carolina counties beginning in June 1996, and ending in October 1998, and tested for arboviruses.

Unexpected corneal flattening after laser in situ keratomileusis.

Purpose: To perform a statistical study of the variation (flattening) from the surgical radius (sculpted in the corneal stroma) to the final radius of the first surface of the cornea after laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) for correction of myopia.

Methods: The study included 387 eyes with myopia or myopic astigmatism that underwent LASIK using the Nidek EC-5000 excimer laser. Mean age was 34 years (range, 19 to 75 yr).

Actin induction during PMA and cAMP-dependent signal pathway activation in Entamoeba histolytica trophozoites.

Activation of PKC or cAMP-dependent signalling pathways in Entamoeba histolytica triggers the phosphorylation of proteins involved in actin rearrangements necessary for adhesion and locomotion. Analogous motifs to SRE and CRE sequences--known to respond to PMA and cAMP--were identified within the 5' regulatory region (5'RR) of one of the parasite actin genes. These sequences could be involved in the actin transcriptional upregulation reported during signalling.

Tyrosine-kinase-dependent recruitment of RGS12 to the N-type calcium channel.

Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)B receptors couple to Go to inhibit N-type calcium channels in embryonic chick dorsal root ganglion neurons. The voltage-independent inhibition, mediated by means of a tyrosine-kinase pathway, is transient and lasts up to 100 seconds. Inhibition of endogenous RGS12, a member of the family of regulators of G-protein signalling, selectively alters the time course of voltage-independent inhibition.

[Influence of helminthic infections and nutritional status on immune response in Venezuelan children].

We investigated the influence of nutritional status, as determined from anthropometric measurement, and of helminthic infections on the immune response of children of low socioeconomic status in two rural communities in Venezuela: El Cardón in the state of Nueva Esparta and San Daniel in the state of Miranda. A total of 125 boys and girls between 2 and 15 years old participated in the study. Their socioeconomic stratum was determined by a modified Graffar method.

[Analysis of the method used in the nursing staff performance evaluation at the USP University Hospital].

The aim of this study was to check if the evaluators and evaluated follow the operational criterion that direct the nursing staffs evaluation of HU; to the identify the graduation conferred to obrigatory and optional forecasters by evaluators and evaluated; to identify the optional forecaster chosen by evaluators and evaluated and prepare the researches to a change at the process of nursing staff's evaluation of HU. Computer users' postures and associations with workstation characteristics.

This investigation tested the hypotheses that (1) physical workstation dimensions are important determinants of operator posture, (2) specific workstation characteristics systematically affect worker posture, and (3) computer operators assume "neutral" upper limb postures while keying. Operator head, neck, and upper extremity posture and selected workstation dimensions and characteristics were measured among 379 computer users. Operator postures were measured with manual goniometers, workstation characteristics were evaluated by observation, and workstation dimensions by direct measurement.

GI endoscopic reprocessing practices in the United States.

Background: Patient infection from contaminated gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopes can generally be attributed to failure to follow appropriate reprocessing guidelines. Recently, the Food and Drug Administration recommended a 45-minute exposure of GI endoscopes to 2.4% glutaraldehyde solutions heated to 25 degrees C.

[Quality of life and mortality of patients in intensive care. Indices of quality of life].

Introduction: At present there is no single practical standardized scale for measuring quality of life (QL). Any proposal should include the patient's physical impairment, level of independence, and subjective perception of happiness. We combined three previously published scales to define a quality of life index (QLI) that we propose as a standard quantitative instrument.

MRP3, a new ATP-binding cassette protein localized to the canalicular domain of the hepatocyte.

Bile secretion in liver is driven in large part by ATP-binding cassette (ABC)-type proteins that reside in the canalicular membrane and effect ATP-dependent transport of bile acids, phospholipids, and non-bile acid organic anions. Canalicular ABC-type proteins can be classified into two subfamilies based on membrane topology and sequence identity: MDR1, MDR3, and SPGP resemble the multidrug resistance (MDR) P-glycoprotein, whereas MRP2 is similar in structure and sequence to the multidrug resistance protein MRP1 and transports similar substrates. We now report the isolation of the rMRP3 gene from rat liver, which codes for a protein 1522 amino acids in length that exhibits extensive sequence similarity with MRP1 and MRP2.

Protective effects of the flavonoid mixture, silymarin, on fetal rat brain and liver.

We investigated the possibility that the flavonoid mixture, silymarin (SY), administered as the compound Silymarin Phytosome (PHYTO), could protect the fetus from maternally ingested EtOH. Seventy-six female rats were randomly assigned to one of seven groups: pair-fed control; chow fed control; EtOH; and four groups receiving EtOH and PHYTO in varying dosages. All groups except the chow-fed control were maintained on a liquid diet.

Regulators of G protein signaling proteins as determinants of the rate of desensitization of presynaptic calcium channels.

Norepinephrine inhibits omega-conotoxin GVIA-sensitive presynaptic Ca2+ channels in chick dorsal root ganglion neurons through two pathways, one mediated by Go and the other by Gi. These pathways desensitize at different rates. We have found that recombinant Galpha interacting protein (GAIP) and regulators of G protein signaling (RGS)4 selectively accelerate the rate of desensitization of Go- and Gi-mediated pathways, respectively.

Plants from Puerto Rico with anti-Mycobacterium tuberculosis properties.

Objective: This study assesses the antitubercular potential of natural products obtained from plants reputed to have medicinal properties and collected from the tropical flora of Puerto Rico.

Background: The increase in persons infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) the world over and the development of resistance to antibiotics by this microbe and other infectious bacteria has created the need for new drugs to replace those which have lost effectiveness.

Method: In Phase I of this study, ethanolic leaf extracts of fifty local plants were submitted to preliminary screening to assess their in vitro Mycobacterium smegmatis inhibitory activity using the Bauer-Kirby disk diffusion method.

[Prone position: postural treatment for patients with adult respiratory distress syndrome. The nurse's point of view].

The prone position is a therapeutic strategy that can be beneficial in the treatment of adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). In order to evaluate the advantages and possible complications associated with this postural change within the context of nursing, we analyzed retrospectively 71 turns carried out in 32 patients who met criteria for ARDS. The patient was turned by a team of 4 or 5 persons following a strict protocol.

Hormonal-induced changes on the lipid composition and DPH fluorescence anisotropy of erythrocyte ghost from pre- and postmenopausal women.

Fluorescence anisotropy determinations were performed on hypotonically lysed red blood cells from 12 healthy, free living, premenopausal and 10 postmenopausal women fed a self-selected diet. Fatty acid composition of phospholipids and cholesterol esters, lipid/lipid and lipid/protein ratios were also determined in erythrocyte ghosts along the menstrual cycle or during hormonal replacement therapy. The postmenopausal women were treated with transdermal 17-beta estradiol (approx, delivery rate of 50 micrograms/day) for a 5-week period and with a combination of percutaneous administration of estradiol and orally administered medroxyprogesterone acetate (5 mg/day) for 5 weeks more.

Therapeutic efficacy of interferon alfa-2b in infants with life-threatening giant hemangiomas.

Background: Because of their size and the possibility of complications, giant hemangiomas represent a therapeutic challenge. Various forms of treatment have been used, with variable results, including surgery, embolization, lasers, pentoxifylline, and corticosteroids. Interferon alfa has been used successfully to treat life-threatening hemangiomas, possibly by means of its antiangiogenic activity.

A yeast ATP-binding cassette-type protein mediating ATP-dependent bile acid transport.

ATP-dependent transport of bile acids is a key determinant of bile flow in mammalian liver and is associated with cholesterol excretion, gallstone formation, and numerous inherited and acquired hepatobiliary diseases. Secretory vesicles and a vacuole enriched fraction purified from Saccharomyces cerevisiae also exhibit ATP-dependent bile acid transport. ATP-dependent transport of bile acids by the vacuolar fraction was independent of the vacuolar proton ATPase, responded to changes in the osmotically sensitive intravesicular space, and was saturable, exhibiting a Km of 63 microM for taurocholate.

Measurement variability in upper extremity posture among VDT users.

Hand and arm posture while keying is frequently mentioned as a risk factor for upper extremity musculoskeletal disorders (UEMSDs) among video display terminal (VDT) operators. However, many epidemiologic studies have not included measures of posture of VDT operators, in part, because of the difficulty of assessing posture rapidly and reliably among large numbers of subjects. For a single measure of posture to be useful for estimating dose-response relationships between posture and risk of UEMSDs, the within-subject variability of the postural measure must be smaller than the between-subject variability of the postural measure.

Methodological limitations in the study of video display terminal use and upper extremity musculoskeletal disorders.

Upper extremity musculoskeletal disorders may occur as a result of work with keyboard-equipped video display terminals. Many studies of the associations between keyboard use and upper extremity disorders have appeared in both the human factors and occupational epidemiologic literature. Methodological limitations and inconsistent results have limited conclusions that can be made from these studies, however.

Acute toxicological effects in rats treated with a mixture of commercially formulated products containing methyl parathion and permethrin.

The study examined the interactions between a commercial formulation of methyl parathion (CF-MP) and a commercially formulated product of permethrin (CF-PMT) in male rats. The acute toxicity (LD50 values) and brain cholinesterase activity were investigated as toxicological endpoints. Results indicated that CF-MP modified the acute toxicity of CF-PMT.

Primary structure and functional expression of a cDNA encoding the bile canalicular, purine-specific Na(+)-nucleoside cotransporter.

We previously characterized a purine-specific Na(+)-nucleoside cotransport system in bile canalicular membrane. The function of this transport system may be related to conserving nucleosides and preventing cholestasis. We report here the isolation of a cDNA encoding a Na(+)-dependent nucleoside transporter from rat liver using an expression cloning strategy.
