Background: Despite the benefits of a COVID-19 vaccination, too few people in Germany were still considered vaccinated in the summer of 2022. This was explained, among other factors, by socio-demographic differences. The article also analyses this correlation by including the sources of information used on corona vaccination based on the data from the third survey of the "Accompanying research on the communication of corona vaccination in Germany" (CoSiD study, Nov.

Purpose: To identify the reasons of individuals aged 60 years and older in Germany for not getting vaccinated against Covid-19.

Methods: Data for this study were collected in July/August 2021 from "Kommunikation der Corona-Schutzimpfung in Deutschland" (CoSiD)", a representative survey of the general adult population in Germany. The focus was on individuals aged 60 years and older in our current study (n=1,281 individuals).

Older adults are at greater risk for heat-related morbidity and mortality, due in part to age-related reductions in heat dissipating capabilities. Previous studies investigating the impact of age on responses to heat stress used approaches that lack activities of daily living and therefore may not accurately depict the thermal/physiological strain that would occur during actual heatwaves. We sought to compare the responses of young (18-39 yr) and older (≥65 yr) adults exposed to two extreme heat simulations.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates the relationship between perceived social norms and COVID-19 vaccination rates among different age groups.
  • During the research, data were collected from over 3,800 adults, focusing on their vaccination intentions and actual status.
  • Findings revealed that perceived norms, especially the opinions of friends and relatives, significantly influenced vaccination rates, particularly in younger individuals (16-59) and consistently across older adults (60+).

Background: Although COVID-19 vaccination reduces severe disease progression as well as hospitalisations and deaths, every fourth to fifth person in Germany is not vaccinated against COVID-19. Effective information and communication measures are needed to reach these people. For this, it is important to know the information behaviour as well as the health competences in the area of COVID-19 vaccination, especially of previously unvaccinated people.

Article Synopsis
  • Research on low-dose morphine's impact on cardiovascular regulation mainly comes from animal studies, leaving a gap in understanding its effects in conscious humans during pain.
  • A study tested whether low-dose morphine can decrease pain perception and sympathetic cardiovascular responses during a controlled cold pressor test with 29 participants.
  • Results showed that morphine significantly lowered perceived pain and mean blood pressure compared to a placebo, but did not affect measures of muscle sympathetic nerve activity, indicating its specific impact on pain rather than overall autonomic response.

Article Synopsis
  • Hemorrhage is a major cause of preventable deaths in both military and civilian contexts, and low-dose morphine is often used for pain relief in prehospital settings.
  • A study involving thirty adults tested whether intravenous morphine (5 mg) impacts hemorrhagic tolerance by comparing it to a placebo in a controlled environment using a lower-body negative pressure protocol.
  • Results showed that low-dose morphine significantly reduced hemorrhagic tolerance and lowered blood pressure, indicating it may not be the best option for managing pain in individuals experiencing significant bleeding.

The repurposing of structurally conserved protein domains in different functional contexts is thought to be a driving force in the evolution of complex protein interaction networks. The BTB/POZ domain is such a versatile binding module that occurs over 200 times in the human proteome with diverse protein-specific adaptations. In BTB-zinc-finger transcription factors, the BTB domain drives homo- and heterodimerization as well as interactions with non-BTB-domain-containing proteins.

  • The prevalence of binge drinking among young people in Germany is declining, with distinctions based on age, gender, education level, and migration background.
  • Between 2008 and 2019, binge drinking decreased among 12- to 25-year-olds, particularly in males and adolescents, while young women’s rates remained relatively stable.
  • The study suggests that prevention efforts should target specific groups, especially young women with higher education, to further address differences in binge drinking trends.

Phosphorus (P) management in agroecosystems is driven by opposing requirements in agronomy, ecology, and environmental protection. The widely used maintenance P fertilization strategy relies on critical concentrations of soil test P (STP), which should cause the lowest possible impact on the environment while still ensuring optimal yield. While both soil P availability and crop yields are fundamentally related to pedoclimatic conditions, little is known about the extent to which soil and climate variables control critical STP.

Iodine (I) is an essential trace element commonly deficient in agricultural systems. Whereas there is much information on I in food crops, there is a lacuna of knowledge on the environmental factors that affect pasture I concentrations. We aimed to identify the most important environmental factors affecting the concentration of I in New Zealand pastures, and the consequences to agricultural systems.

Background: National and international studies indicate that despite the decline in the consumption of traditional tobacco cigarettes, the consumption of other products, such as waterpipes (or hookahs), e‑cigarettes or e‑hookahs (a variant of e‑cigarettes), may be increasing. In addition to the long-term change in smoking behaviour, this article examines how the prevalence of smoking tobacco cigarettes, waterpipes, e‑cigarettes and e‑hookahs in adolescents and young adults in Germany has developed between 2007 and 2016.

Methods: Data are based on representative surveys on substance use among adolescents and young adults between the ages of 12 and 25 conducted by the Federal Center for Health Education (BZgA) from 1973 to 2016.

Article Synopsis
  • In Germany, adolescent smoking rates have declined since the early 2000s, but vary significantly by type of secondary school.
  • Data from four studies between 2001-2015 showed that while smoking rates decreased across all educational groups, students in higher educational tracks maintained lower rates.
  • Although absolute educational inequalities decreased, relative inequalities remained stable or even increased, highlighting the need for targeted tobacco control measures.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines the effectiveness of a peer-led educational program aimed at preventing substance abuse among adolescents in leisure settings, as part of the 'Na Toll!' campaign in Germany.
  • The research involved 738 adolescents aged 12-20 and measured changes in risk perception, group communication, and resistance self-efficacy regarding alcohol use using a post-test-only design.
  • Results indicated that while there were immediate positive effects on risk perception and communication about alcohol among peers, long-term benefits were less consistent, with only risk perception showing lasting improvement.

[Assessing the health target "Reduce tobacco consumption"].

Bundesgesundheitsblatt Gesundheitsforschung Gesundheitsschutz

February 2010

The consortium gesundheitsziele.de has defined health targets and actions to reduce tobacco consumption of the general population. Five primary fields of action were defined: (1) tax increase, (2) ban of advertisements, (3) protection against second-hand smoking, (SHS) (4) support of smoking cessation, and (5) actions to avoid taking up smoking.

Following an increase in tobacco consumption among 12 to 17 year olds between 1993 and 1997, a policy mix comprising various structural and behavioral prevention measures was implemented in Germany. One element of this policy mix is the "rauchfrei" ("smoke-free") youth campaign of the BZgA (Federal Centre for Health Education), a combination of media that reaches a large number of youth, personal communication, and setting-based interventions. The aim is to prevent young people from starting to smoke and to promote the cessation of smoking at an early stage.

Objective: Recent research suggests that dyspnea is not a single sensation but a multidimensional construct reflected in different verbal descriptors that can provide useful diagnostic information. In this study superordinated clusters of dyspnea were investigated in combination with a dimensional approach.

Design: We examined the use of 20 respiratory symptom descriptors by healthy volunteers who completed a protocol of seven experimental conditions: Quiet breathing, breath holding, paced breathing, climbing stairs, resistive load breathing, voluntary hyperinflation, and voluntary hyperventilation.
