Innate/inflammatory bioregulation and clinical effectiveness of whole-body hyperthermia (balneotherapy) in elderly patients with osteoarthritis.

Objectives: Balneotherapy with mud application (mud therapy) is a common hydrothermal intervention for the treatment and rehabilitation of elderly patients with osteoarthritis, leading to anti-inflammatory effects. The main purpose of this investigation was to study a role for regulatory T cells in these anti-inflammatory effects. The second objective was to assess whether the neutrophil-mediated innate response is affected by these anti-inflammatory effects.

Alterations of sex determination pathways in the genital ridges of males with limited Y chromosome genes†.

We previously demonstrated that in the mouse only two Y chromosome genes are required for a male to produce an offspring with the help of assisted reproduction technologies (ART): testis determinant Sry and spermatogonial proliferation factor Eif2s3y. Subsequently, we have shown that the function of these genes can be replaced by transgenic overexpression of their homologs, autosomally encoded Sox9 and X-chromosome encoded Eif2s3x. Males with Y chromosome contribution limited to two (XEif2s3yOSry), one (XEif2s3yOSox9 and XOSry,Eif2s3x), and no genes (XOSox9,Eif2s3x) produced haploid germ cells and sired offspring after ART.

Single nanowire measurements of room temperature ferromagnetism in FeSi nanowires and the effects of Mn-doping.

Semiconductors with magnetic response at room temperature are sought for spintronics in solid-state devices. Among possible materials for this applications, the magnetic response of FeSi and doped FeSi have produced contradictory results at the nanoscale and more precise measurements and deeper studies are needed to clarify its potential capabilities. For that reason, in this work, single nanowire measurements of ferromagnetic semiconducting FeSi and Mn-doped FeSi nanostructures have been performed using magnetic force microscopy and electron holography.

Gender, Marital Status, and Children as Risk Factors for Burnout in Nurses: A Meta-Analytic Study.

The correlation between the burnout syndrome and sociodemographic variables in nursing professionals has been widely studied though research results are contradictory. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of gender, marital status, and children on the dimensions of the burnout syndrome (emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and personal accomplishment) in nursing professionals, as measured with the Maslach Burnout Inventory. The search was performed in May 2018 in the next databases: CINAHL, CUIDEN, Dialnet, Psicodoc, ProQuest Platform, OVID Platform, and Scopus with the search equation ("Maslach Burnout Inventory" OR "MBI") AND "nurs*", without using any search restriction.

A new C,N-cyclometalated osmium(ii) arene anticancer scaffold with a handle for functionalization and antioxidative properties.

A series of six osmium(ii) complexes of the type [(η6-p-cymene)Os(C^N)X] (X = chlorido or acetato) containing benzimidazole C^N ligands with an ester group as a handle for further functionalization have been synthesized. They exhibit IC50 values in the low micromolar range in a panel of cisplatin (CDDP)-resistant cancer cells (approximately 10× more cytotoxic than CDDP in MCF-7), decrease the levels of intracellular ROS and reduce the NAD+ coenzyme, and inhibit tubulin polymerization. This discovery could open the door to a new large family of osmium(ii)-based bioconjugates with diverse modes of action.

Health care and therapeutic education program for newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes: A new approach in primary care.

Introduction: Despite the favorable evidence available, our public health care system has no specific programs including therapeutic education for patients newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes (T2DM), which would be crucial for the subsequent course of the disease.

Objectives: To assess the effectiveness of a "Health care and Therapeutic Education Program for newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes (PAET-Debut DM2)" agreed by the primary care centers and the reference hospital in a given geographical area.

Methods: A prospective pilot study in patients over 18 years of age diagnosed with T2DM between February 2012 and 2013.

Different authors have emphasized the special attention such psychological characteristics should receive considering the extent they can influence athletes' behavior either in training or in competition. This paper is aimed at describing the psychological profiles of two cycling sports: triathlon and road cycling.

A new survival model with surviving fraction: An application to colorectal cancer data.

We propose a new survival model for lifetime data in the presence of surviving fraction and obtain some of its properties. Its genesis is based on extensions of the promotion time cure model, where an extra parameter controls the heterogeneity or dependence of an unobserved number of lifetimes. We construct a regression model to evaluate the effects of covariates in the cured fraction.

Effect of Pitch Size on Technical-Tactical Actions of the Goalkeeper in Small-Sided Games.

The aim of this paper was to determine how the size of the pitch affected technical and tactical actions of the goalkeeper when playing small-sided games. The participants were 13 male youth players, including 3 goalkeepers. Three different pitch sizes were used (62 x 44 m; 50 x 35 m; 32 x 23 m).

Tunable entanglement distillation of spatially correlated down-converted photons.

We report on a new technique for entanglement distillation of the bipartite continuous variable state of spatially correlated photons generated in the spontaneous parametric down-conversion process (SPDC), where tunable non-Gaussian operations are implemented and the post-processed entanglement is certified in real-time using a single-photon sensitive electron multiplying CCD (EMCCD) camera. The local operations are performed using non-Gaussian filters modulated into a programmable spatial light modulator and, by using the EMCCD camera for actively recording the probability distributions of the twin-photons, one has fine control of the Schmidt number of the distilled state. We show that even simple non-Gaussian filters can be finely tuned to a ∼67% net gain of the initial entanglement generated in the SPDC process.

This document is an update to the clinical practice recommendations for the management of cardiovascular risk factors in diabetes mellitus. The consensus is made by members of the Cardiovascular Risk Group of the Spanish Diabetes Society. We have proposed and updated interventions on lifestyle, pharmacological treatment indicated to achieve therapeutic objectives according to the levels of HbA1c, degree of obesity, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, heart failure, platelet antiagregation, renal insufficiency, and diabetes in the elderly, as well as new biomarkers of interest in the evaluation of cardiovascular risk in individuals with diabetes mellitus.

Purpose: The activity of stearoyl-CoA desaturase-1 (SCD1) is increased in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The incidence of lentigo maligna (LM), in situ (LM) or invasive (lentigo maligna melanoma, LMM), has increased during the last decades. Due to functional or cosmetic outcomes, optimal treatment with surgical excision may not be appropriate in some cases. We tried less invasive therapy, immunocryosurgery, as a single treatment for LM or combined with surgery for LMM, with better aesthetic results.

The Impact of Molar-Incisor Hypomineralisation on Dental Caries in Permanent First Molars: A Prospective Cohort Study.

Purpose: To compare 2-year cumulative survival rates in first permanent molars (FPM) with and without MIH and to investigate risk factors associated with caries incidence.

Materials And Methods: A total of 142 children aged 5 to 6 years were recruited from all public schools in Botelhos, Minas Gerais, Brazil and 536 FPM were examined. A questionnaire was designed to collect sociodemographic background and behavioural information about children and their parents.
