Background: The goal of the College of Anaesthesiologists of Ireland (CAI) is to train qualified anaesthesiologists who embody all aspects of professionalism. The Medical Council of Ireland has identified Eight Domains of Good Professional Practice which guide the standards for postgraduate specialist training, including within the CAI.
Aims: Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs) were adopted as the organising framework for a competency-based programme within CAI.
Background: Simulation-based medical education has rapidly evolved over the past two decades, despite this, there are few published reports of its use in critical care teaching. We hypothesised that simulation-based teaching of a critical care topic to final-year medical students is superior to lecture-based teaching.
Methods: Thirty-nine final-year medical students were randomly assigned to either simulation-based or lecture-based teaching in the chosen critical care topic.
Purpose: A simple test that could guide successful cessation of continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) in critically ill patients would be clinically useful. This study aimed to investigate whether a 2-hour creatinine clearance (2h-CrCl) measurement could more accurately predict successful cessation of CRRT than serum creatinine or urine output alone.
Materials And Methods: This retrospective study identified all patients admitted to a university teaching hospital intensive care unit who received CRRT and had a 2h-CrCl measurement performed in the 12 hours preceding CRRT cessation.
