This paper investigates heritage climatology through global analysis of damage functions for collections, aiming to learn about the reliability of these functions and the field itself. It addresses the growing interest in geospatial analysis of climate hazards for cultural heritage, proposing parameters that refine climate-related deterioration processes. Using global daily climate data from 1991 to 2020, the study assesses damage functions reliant on temperature and relative humidity inputs, including damage functions for paper and metals, alongside indices for humidity fluctuations and mould growth.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined how ischemia, retinal fluid, and layer thickness impact visual acuity (VA) in patients with retinal vein occlusion (RVO) using swept-source optical coherence tomography (OCT).
  • Patients received aflibercept injections and were monitored through OCT analysis at baseline and after 3 and 6 months, correlating OCT findings with changes in best-corrected VA (BCVA).
  • Results showed that a combination of intraretinal fluid (IRF) volume, thickness measurements in specific retinal layers, and ischemic indices had the strongest correlation with changes in VA, highlighting useful clinical markers for RVO management.

Background: Accumulating evidence suggests that rapid eye movement sleep (REM) supports the consolidation of extinction memory. REM is disrupted in posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and REM abnormalities after traumatic events increase the risk of developing PTSD. Therefore, it was hypothesized that abnormal REM in trauma-exposed individuals may pave the way for PTSD by interfering with the processing of extinction memory.

Femur fracture leads to loss of bone at uninjured skeletal sites, which may increase risk of subsequent fracture. Osteocytes, the most abundant bone cells, can directly resorb bone matrix and regulate osteoclast and osteoblast activity, but their role in systemic bone loss after fracture remains poorly understood. In this study we used a transgenic (TG+) mouse model that overexpresses human B-cell lymphoma 2 (BCL-2) in osteoblasts and osteocytes.

Article Synopsis
  • Emerging research links age-related musculoskeletal diseases, particularly osteoarthritis (OA), to developmental factors, highlighting the importance of DNA methylation in OA risk.
  • A study quantified DNA methylation across approximately 700,000 individual CpGs in developing human chondrocytes, revealing significant changes in 3% of CpGs and over 8,200 differentially methylated regions during development.
  • Findings indicate that specific OA genetic variants align with methylation changes, suggesting that understanding these developmental processes could significantly influence future genetic-based therapies for OA.

Objective: Using a double-dummy pilot randomized controlled trial design, we aimed to determine the feasibility and acceptability of comparing remote electrical neuromodulation (REN) to typical care intravenous pharmacologic interventions for the treatment of children and adolescents visiting the emergency department (ED) with migraine, and to compare parallel-group versus crossover trial designs.

Background: There are limited data to guide the management of migraine in the ED. Children and adolescents are interested in neuromodulation, and specifically REN, for treatment in this setting, but there are no existing data on this approach.

Study Objectives: Trauma-related nightmares (TRNs) are a hallmark symptom of PTSD and are highly correlated with PTSD severity and poor sleep quality. Given the salience and arousal associated with TRNs, they might be an effective target for imaginal exposures during Prolonged Exposure (PE) therapy. As a first step in this line of research, the current study compared participants' emotional reactivity during recollection of TRNs to their recollection of the index traumatic event.

  • Children in Canada aged 5-11 from food-insecure households show poorer mental health outcomes compared to their food-secure peers.
  • This study analyzed data from over 16,000 children to investigate the link between household food insecurity severity and diagnosed mental health conditions like anxiety and depression.
  • The results indicate that as the severity of food insecurity increases, so do the odds of children having diagnosed mental health issues, highlighting the negative impact of social and economic disparities on child health.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study analyzed the genetic factors influencing morphological traits in the castes of social wasp *Vespula maculifrons*, revealing weak genetic influences on caste variation and higher heritability in queen traits compared to worker traits.
  • - Despite expectations, the genetic architecture of traits exhibited similarities between queens and workers, and no significant relationship was found between caste dimorphism and correlation, challenging the idea of constraints due to genetic conflict.
  • - Overall, the results indicate that environmental differences largely drive phenotypic variation among castes, suggesting that past selection on caste phenotypes has shifted the emphasis towards environmental influences.

AbstractFreshwater salinity regimes vary naturally and are changing in response to anthropogenic activities. Few insect species tolerate saline waters, and biodiversity losses are associated with increasing salinity in freshwater. We used radiotracers (Na, SO, and Ca) to examine ion uptake rates across concentration gradients in mayflies (Ephemeroptera), caddis flies (Trichoptera), and mosquitoes (Diptera) and made observations for some traits in seven other taxa representing mayflies, stone flies (Plecoptera), true flies (Diptera), and true bugs (Hemiptera).

In patients with migraine, an excitation-inhibition imbalance that fluctuates relative to attack onset has been proposed to contribute to the underlying pathophysiology of migraine, but this has yet to be explored in children and adolescents. This prospective, observational, cohort study examined glutamate and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) levels across the phases of a migraine attack and interictally in children and adolescents using magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Macromolecule-suppressed GABA (sensorimotor cortex and thalamus) and glutamate (occipital cortex, sensorimotor cortex, and thalamus) were measured in children and adolescents (10-17 years) with a migraine diagnosis with or without aura 4 times over 2 weeks.

The epigenome, including the methylation of cytosine bases at CG dinucleotides, is intrinsically linked to transcriptional regulation. The tight regulation of gene expression during skeletal development is essential, with ~1/500 individuals born with skeletal abnormalities. Furthermore, increasing evidence is emerging to link age-associated complex genetic musculoskeletal diseases, including osteoarthritis (OA), to developmental factors including joint shape.
