Background: Proximal interphalangeal injury may result in malalignment of the phalanx axis of motion. In some instances, these fractures are treated with an external fixation method such as Suzuki-type fixation, during which the surgeon must perform X-rays to preserve the phalanx anatomical axis of motion.
Objectives: To assess the correlation between the palmar skin crease and the joint axis of the proximal interphalangeal joint (PIPJ) of the fingers opposing the thumb to improve the surgeons' perioperative planning procedure.
Purpose: To explore the distribution and prevalence of osteoarthritis in metacarpophalangeal, proximal interphalangeal and distal interphalangeal joints in long fingers in a cadaveric study, and to discuss potential biomechanical influences on these patterns.
Methods: This cadaveric study evaluated 144 metacarpophalangeal, proximal interphalangeal and distal interphalangeal joints from 12 embalmed cadaver hands. A dorsal dissection approach was used to expose the joints, which were then marked with color-coded pegs for consistent orientation during imaging.
Background: Exclusive breastfeeding is recommended through six months as it supports infant growth and development. Yet, many mothers do not exclusively breastfeed in early postpartum.
Objectives: To examine factors associated with exclusive breastfeeding at hospital discharge among culturally diverse women.
A variational approach is proposed to study the Stokes flow in a two-dimensional non-uniform channel. By using the stationarity of the Lagrangian, the Euler-Lagrange equations are established which leads to a simple set of ordinary differential equations to provide an estimate for the average pressure drop explicitly in terms of the channel shape function. The results for the pressure drop show an excellent agreement with the second-order extended lubrication theory.

Hypothesis: The droplet/bubble adhesion characteristics depend on the length of the droplet/bubble three-phase contact line. Since the deformation caused by the liquid-gas interfacial tension on the soft substrate, referred as to the wetting ridge, retards contact line spreading and retraction, we conjecture that the droplet/bubble adhesion characteristics depend also on the substrate softness.
Experiments: Soft substrates with various shear moduli are prepared and characterized by the spreading and receding dynamics of water droplets and underwater bubbles.
We investigate experimentally the effects of pore size, surface wettability, and penetration mode on the characteristics of liquid penetration through meshes. Utilizing the impact of droplets and the hydrostatic pressure, we study water penetration through superhydrophobic, hydrophobic, superhydrophilic, and hydrophilic meshes with different uniform radii and pitch values of the pores. In the case of dynamic penetration enabled by the droplet impact, our results show that surface wettability has a negligible effect on either the threshold speed of the droplet penetration or the penetrating liquid mass.

Methods: A total of 805 healthy infants aged 6-8 weeks were randomised to 7 groups (n = 115). Six groups received Synflorix(PCV10) or Prevenar13(PCV13) in the following schedules: 3 + 0 (three primary at 6, 10, and 14 weeks); 2 + 1 (two primary 6 and 14 weeks with booster at 9 months; 1 + 1 (one primary at 14 weeks with booster at 9 months).
The radial tunnel syndrome (RTS) is an entrapment of the radial nerve in the forearm. It is characterized by pain focused on the trapping area in the proximal forearm as well as pain radiated down the forearm. The syndrome is more common in men and in our estimation, there is a circumstantial connection to the continuous use of the computer keyboard.

Case: Trigger finger (TF), or stenosing synovitis, is a common condition that can usually be diagnosed by physical examination. We recently operated on a patient with TF who did not respond to conservative treatment. At surgery, we found an anomalous insertion of the fourth lumbrical muscle to the A1 pulley.

This compartment contains the extensor pollicis brevis (EPB) and abductor pollicis longus (APL) tendons in their individual retinacular sheath. Non-inflammatory thickening of the tendinous sheath leads to entrapment of the individual tendons and increased friction.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFLipoma of the nerve is an uncommon tumor, and usually has the highest incidence in the upper limb, especially in the median nerve. When the lesion is large it can cause peripheral neuropathy such as carpal tunnel syndrome. Therefore, a physical examination is paramount for correct surgery and patient preparation.

Design: Cross-sectional analysis of data from Nigeria's 2018 Demographic and Health Survey (DHS).
Setting: Nigeria.
Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a common condition within sub-Saharan Africa and associated with high under-5 mortality (U5M). The American Society of Hematology instituted the Consortium on Newborn Screening in Africa (CONSA) for SCD, a 7-country network of sites to implement standardized newborn hemoglobinopathy screening and early intervention for children with SCD in sub-Saharan Africa. CONSA's overall hypothesis is that early infant SCD screening and entry into standardized, continuous care will reduce U5M compared with historical estimates in the region.

Nutritional deficiencies impair immunity and increase susceptibility to infection. Simultaneously, infections compound undernutrition by increasing metabolic demand and impairing nutrient absorption.

There have been scarce descriptions of multiple Giant Cell Tumors of tendon sheath. Multiple tumors may predispose patients to a higher recurrence rate; therefore, recognition and treatment of this rare entity is important.

Even seemingly small cuts carry a high risk of injury to flexor tendons of the hand which requires surgical treatment by a specialist. Elucidation of the relevant history, along with a dedicated and focused physical examination is imperative for an early intervention which, along with a meticulous surgical technique and dedicated rehabilitation by occupational therapists, will lead to a much improved functional prognosis for the patient.

Up-and-down is the most popular family of dose-finding designs and is in common use in anesthesiology. Despite its widespread use, many aspects of up-and-down are not well known, implementation is often misguided, and standard, up-to-date reference material about the design is very limited.

The Family-Assisted Severe Febrile Illness ThERapy (FASTER) tool has been developed for caregivers to assist in monitoring their hospitalized children and alert clinicians. This study evaluates feasibility of implementation by caregivers and clinicians.

Statements and reports of health outcomes typically group mothers under 20 years old together. Few studies examined this risk at a finer age resolution, none of them comprehensively, and with differing results.
