Introduction: The aim of our study was to assess the outcome of Gore-Tex sutures in minimally invasive scleral fixation of subluxated posterior chamber intraocular lenses (PCIOLs) and to demonstrate a method for validating the lens position.

Methods: Retrospective study of patients who underwent lasso in-the-bag scleral fixation of a subluxated PCIOL using the snare technique with Gore-Tex suture from 2019 to 2021 in a single tertiary medical center. Functional outcome was analyzed by clinical assessment, and anatomical outcome, by ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM).

Purpose: To recognize prognostic factors for better final visual acuity (VA) in patients presenting with submacular hemorrhage (SMH) secondary to exudative age-related macular degeneration

Methods: This retrospective study included patients who presented to a tertiary ophthalmology department between 2012 and 2019 with SMH and were treated by pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) or injection of tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) with pneumatic displacement. Baseline characteristics included demographic data, VA and optical coherence tomography (OCT) characteristics of the SMH. Patients were divided into groups by improvement of at least 2 lines in BCVA (best corrected visual acuity), and by having a final BCVA better than 20/200.

Article Synopsis
  • During combined phacovitrectomy, suturing the main corneal incision is typically done to avoid leaks, but this study explores the use of a self-sealing technique instead.
  • The study reviewed cases from a university hospital where surgeons performed surgeries without planned sutures, only using them if needed due to complications.
  • Results showed that only 5% of cases required suturing for leaks, indicating that preventive suturing may not be necessary and can be selectively applied when complications occur.

Background: This study aims to examine the rare entity of unilateral macular lesions in the pediatric population and describe the distinct diagnoses and characterizations related to these findings.

Methods: A retrospective cohort design. The database of the ophthalmology clinic in a tertiary medical center was reviewed to identify all children with incidental unilateral macular findings, examined during 2016 through 2021.

Objective: To determine the potential of optical coherence tomography (OCT) and OCT angiography (OCTA) to distinguish between glaucoma and pituitary macroadenoma by optic disc appearance.

Methods: This prospective case-control study comprised 31 patients: 23 with glaucoma (18 male, 5 female) and 8 with pituitary macroadenoma and chiasmatic compression (3 male, 5 female). The corresponding mean ages were 72.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate the foveal microvascular structure in children who had retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) and were treated with diode laser photocoagulation, utilizing optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA).
  • The research involved 17 children with a history of ROP and compared their OCTA results to those of 12 healthy controls, finding significant differences in several parameters.
  • Key findings included a smaller foveal avascular zone and lower vascular density in the ROP group, indicating that OCTA can reveal important long-term changes in macular structures for these patients.

Hyperreflective foci (HRF) is a term coined to depict hyperreflective dots or roundish lesions within retinal layers visualized through optical coherence tomography (OCT). Histopathological correlates of HRF are not univocal, spacing from migrating retinal pigment epithelium cells, lipid-laden macrophages, microglial cells, and extravasated proteinaceous or lipid material. Despite this, HRF can be considered OCT biomarkers for disease progression, treatment response, and prognosis in several retinal diseases, including diabetic macular edema, age-related macular degeneration (AMD), retinal vascular occlusions, and inherited retinal dystrophies.

Purpose: To assess the normal healing process of limbal-conjunctival autograft (LCA) after pterygium removal during the early postoperative period using anterior segment optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA).

Methods: Prospective case series of seven patients undergoing pterygium removal with LCA transplantation procedure, imaged with anterior segment OCTA, and anterior segment colour photos prior to the procedure and on postoperative day (POD) 1, 3, 7 and 30. Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the clearance of Aflibercept, an anti-VEGF treatment, from the anterior chamber of the eye in a rat model to understand its impact on intraocular pressure (IOP).
  • Following induction of choroidal neovascular lesions, rats received Aflibercept injections and were euthanized at various time intervals for analysis using fluorescence staining.
  • Results showed complete clearance of Aflibercept from the anterior chamber angle within 48 hours, suggesting that there is no mechanical obstruction related to elevated IOP in the context of Aflibercept treatment.
