Despite a significant increase in utilization over the past decade, the number of donation after circulatory death (DCD) organs that are procured and transplanted in the United States (US) remains well below its potential. There is still room for expansion, as utilizing DCD organs to the fullest extent is currently the most viable solution to the persistent mismatch between supply and demand in transplantation. We convened a multidisciplinary transplantation summit to examine various aspects of DCD, with faculty members from around the world with clinical and academic interest in DCD donation and transplantation, including abdominal and cardiothoracic surgeons, organ procurement organization directors, hepatologists, and gastroenterologists.

Proper maintenance of intracellular vesicular pH is essential for cargo trafficking during synaptic function and plasticity. Mutations in the SLC9A6 gene encoding the recycling endosomal pH regulator (Na, K)/H exchanger isoform 6 (NHE6) are causal for Christianson syndrome (CS), a severe form of X-linked intellectual disability. NHE6 expression is also downregulated in other neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative disorders, such as autism spectrum disorder and Alzheimer's disease, suggesting its dysfunction could contribute more broadly to the pathophysiology of other neurological conditions.

Objectives: Closed-loop adaptive deep brain stimulation (aDBS) continuously adjusts stimulation parameters, with the potential to improve efficacy and reduce side effects of deep brain stimulation (DBS) for Parkinson's disease (PD). Rodent models can provide an effective platform for testing aDBS algorithms and establishing efficacy before clinical investigation. The American Society of Nephrology (ASN) Task Force on the Future of Nephrology was established in April 2022 in response to requests from the American Board of Internal Medicine and the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education regarding training requirements in nephrology. Given recent changes in kidney care, ASN also charged the task force with reconsidering all aspects of the specialty's future to ensure that nephrologists are prepared to provide high-quality care for people with kidney diseases. The task force engaged multiple stakeholders to develop 10 recommendations focused on strategies needed to promote: ( 1 ) just, equitable, and high-quality care for people living with kidney diseases; ( 2 ) the value of nephrology as a specialty to nephrologists, the future nephrology workforce, the health care system, the public, and government; and ( 3 ) innovation and personalization of nephrology education across the scope of medical training.

Endomembrane alkali cation (Na, K)/proton (H) exchangers (eNHEs) are increasingly associated with neurological disorders. These eNHEs play integral roles in regulating the luminal pH, processing, and trafficking of cargo along the secretory (Golgi and post-Golgi vesicles) and endocytic (early, recycling, and late endosomes) pathways, essential regulatory processes vital for neuronal development and plasticity. Given the complex morphology and compartmentalization of multipolar neurons, the contribution of eNHEs in maintaining optimal pH homeostasis and cargo trafficking is especially significant during periods of structural and functional development and remodeling.

Closed-loop control strategies for deep brain stimulation (DBS) in Parkinson's disease offer the potential to provide more effective control of patient symptoms and fewer side effects than continuous stimulation, while reducing battery consumption. Most of the closed-loop methods proposed and tested to-date rely on controller parameters, such as controller gains, that remain constant over time. While the controller may operate effectively close to the operating point for which it is set, providing benefits when compared to conventional open-loop DBS, it may perform sub-optimally if the operating conditions evolve.
