Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to explore how the mineral distribution in enamel affects the effectiveness of silver diammine fluoride (SDF) in remineralizing and staining caries lesions.
  • A laboratory experiment tested different treatments (SDF, fluoride varnish, and deionized water) on various types of lesions created in bovine enamel, analyzing changes in mineral levels and color.
  • Results showed that treatment type and lesion protocol significantly affected mineral loss and color changes, with SDF leading to increased mineral gain in the surface zone, while staining from SDF varied based on lesion type.

Background: Decreased salivary secretion is not only a risk factor for carious lesions in Sjögren's disease (SD) but also an indicator of deterioration of teeth with every restorative replacement. This study determined the longevity of direct dental restorations placed in patients with SD using matched electronic dental record (EDR) and electronic health record (EHR) data.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study using EDR and EHR data of Indiana University School of Dentistry patients who have a SD diagnosis in their EHR.

Purpose/objectives: To investigate dental students' perceptions and concerns regarding the COVID-19 pandemic, their coping strategies and support resources, and their perceived stress levels.

Methods: A customized 19-item survey and the perceived stress scale (PSS) were applied to undergraduate dental students from the US, Spain, Ireland, Chile, India, and Brazil between April 10 and July 5, 2020. Linear modeling and mediation analysis were used to explore the relationships among demographics, stressors, coping mechanisms, social support, and stress RESULTS: A total of 4475 students responded to the survey.

Objectives: To compare the clinical performance of a universal adhesive in class V non-carious cervical lesions (NCCLs) using two surface treatment protocols (self-etch [SfE] vs selective-enamel-etch [SelE]).

Material And Methods: Thirty-three adults, each with ≥2 NCCLs, received one resin composite restoration utilizing a SfE universal adhesive and another utilizing the adhesive and SelE with 37% phosphoric acid. Restorations were evaluated for sensitivity, retention, marginal discoloration, marginal adaptation, and clinical acceptability through 24 months using Cochran-Mantel-Haenszel tests for stratified, ordered categorical outcomes.

Article Synopsis
  • This study explores dental students' knowledge and perceptions of silver diamine fluoride (SDF) as a treatment for caries, particularly among high-risk populations like older adults.
  • A survey, consisting of demographic questions and evaluations of SDF knowledge and perceptions, was distributed to graduating dental students across 7 U.S. dental schools, with a 55% response rate.
  • Findings show that students generally viewed SDF positively, recognizing its usefulness and appropriateness, and expressed a willingness to use it in their future practices.
