Dialogues on nursing curriculum and pedagogy: a critical planning activity for global educational collaboration.

Purpose: We describe the experience of a collaborative, dialogical process on nursing pedagogy to identify the best process for creating a mutually beneficial international nursing education exchange.

Approach: Faculty from two universities in Sucre, Bolivia and in Seattle, Washington, US engaged in planned virtual dialogues to share their nursing curricula, course content, teaching methodologies, and contextual challenges and strengths.

Results: From the dialogues, a thematic analysis using a modified conventional content analysis approach was completed, and four themes emerged: 1) similarities in course content, pedagogy, and curricular challenges; 2) differences in teaching competencies; 3) teaching methodologies responsive to national trends; and 4) benefits from and alternatives to the use of educational technology.

Early adolescent perceived friendship quality aids affective and neural responses to social inclusion and exclusion in young adults with and without adverse childhood experiences.

Friendships increase mental wellbeing and resilient functioning in young people with childhood adversity (CA). However, the mechanisms of this relationship are unknown. We examined the relationship between perceived friendship quality at age 14 after the experience of CA and reduced affective and neural responses to social exclusion at age 24.

Childhood maltreatment influences adult brain structure through its effects on immune, metabolic, and psychosocial factors.

Childhood maltreatment (CM) leads to a lifelong susceptibility to mental ill-health which might be reflected by its effects on adult brain structure, perhaps indirectly mediated by its effects on adult metabolic, immune, and psychosocial systems. Indexing these systemic factors via body mass index (BMI), C-reactive protein (CRP), and rates of adult trauma (AT), respectively, we tested three hypotheses: (H1) CM has direct or indirect effects on adult trauma, BMI, and CRP; (H2) adult trauma, BMI, and CRP are all independently related to adult brain structure; and (H3) childhood maltreatment has indirect effects on adult brain structure mediated in parallel by BMI, CRP, and AT. Using path analysis and data from = 116,887 participants in UK Biobank, we find that CM is related to greater BMI and AT levels, and that these two variables mediate CM's effects on CRP [H1].

Mycetoma in Ecuador.

Background: Previous studies on the distribution of mycetoma globally have failed to identify Ecuador as an endemic country.

Methods: We present data on 35 cases of mycetoma in Ecuador between 1955 and 2021: 5 cases from our experience and 30 cases from the literature.

Results: Eight cases of eumycetoma (23%) and 27 cases of actinomycetoma (77%) were diagnosed.

The stress-buffering role of friendships in young people with childhood threat experiences: a preliminary report.

The Protective Effect of Breastfeeding on Dental Fluorosis Among Children in Rural Fluoride-Endemic Areas.

Living in fluoride-endemic areas and the inevitable use of groundwater for consumption have imposed children at high risk of dental fluorosis. To mitigate exposure to excessive fluoride at age of developing dentition, breastfeeding might serve as a natural public health intervention against dental fluorosis in that socially disadvantaged context. This study aimed to evaluate the preventive effect of breastfeeding against dental fluorosis in children living in fluoride-endemic areas in Nakhon Pathom Province, Thailand.

Compassionate communities: How to assess their benefit? A protocol of a collaborative study between different countries.

Background: Communities and local governments invest in compassionate communities (CCs) a great deal of time, money, effort, and work. However, it is not known whether the CCs are having the effect they are expected to have, so the value of continuing with these initiatives is unknown, and there is a need for a model for evaluating CCs to solve the question.

Objectives: To identify a set of core outcomes or benefits that should be measured to assess the impact of the CCs.

Preliminary data on oxytocin modulation of neural reactivity in women to emotional stimuli of children depending on childhood emotional neglect.

Sensitivity for rewarding cues and distress signals from children is fundamental to human caregiving and modulated by the neuropeptide oxytocin. In a functional magnetic resonance imaging study, we investigated whether oxytocin regulates neural responses to reward or distress cues form children. In a placebo-controlled, within-subject design, we measured neural responses to positive, negative, and neutral cues from children in 22 healthy female subjects who received oxytocin (24 IU) versus placebo.

Large brown macroalgae are foundational threatened species in coastal ecosystems from the subtropical northeastern Atlantic, where they have exhibited a drastic decline in recent years. Genetic Diversity and Wolbachia (Rickettsiales: Anaplasmataceae) Prevalence Within a Remnant Population of Regal Fritillary, Argynnis idalia (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae), in South-Central Pennsylvania.

Eastern populations of the North American regal fritillary, Argynnis idalia Drury (1773), have been largely extirpated over the past half century. Here we report on the last remaining population of eastern regal fritillaries, located within a military installation in south-central Pennsylvania. Samples were obtained from field specimens during two years of annual monitoring, and from females collected for captive rearing over a five year period.

Consumption of Deep-Fried Food and Its Association with Cardiovascular Risk Factors among First-Year Students in a Chilean University.

The increase in the consumption of deep-fried foods (DFFs) from street vendors in Chile affects body weight and health. However, the actual consumption frequency of these types of foods by population and their relationship with cardiovascular risk factors (CVRFs) is unknown. The consumption frequency of eight DFFs sold in street vendors was obtained through a questionnaire.

Background: Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) presents high mortality and postoperative, gastrointestinal and neurodevelopmental morbidity. There is limited information about NEC in Chile.

Aim: To describe the clinical/epidemiological behavior of newborns who underwent NEC.

REACT study protocol: resilience after the COVID-19 threat (REACT) in adolescents.

Introduction: COVID-19-related social isolation and stress may have significant mental health effects, including post-traumatic stress, anxiety and depression. These factors are thought to disproportionately affect populations at risk of psychopathology, such as adolescents with a history of childhood adversity (CA). Therefore, examining which factors may buffer the impact of COVID-19-related stress and isolation in vulnerable adolescents is critical.

Although their environmental concentrations are generally low, they can pose risk to organisms through bioaccumulation, causing sublethal effects. Application of Chitosan and Chondroitin Sulphate Aerogels in a Patient With Diabetes With an Open Forefoot Transmetatarsal Amputation.

Introduction: Diabetic foot ulcers may lead to nontraumatic amputations of the foot, leading to a decrease in patient quality of life. Transmetatarsal amputations (TMAs) represent an effective surgical procedure in cases of severe foot infection, but the tissue reconstruction is complicated and additional procedures should be considered. The present case report evaluates the wound closure of an open TMA in a patient with diabetes treated with a new aerogel composed of chitosan (ChS) and chondroitin sulphate (CS), without needing a skin graft.

Background: In mammals, hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (HED) is a genetic disorder that is characterized by sparse hair, tooth abnormalities, and defects in cutaneous glands. Only four genes, EDA, EDAR, EDARADD and WNT10A account for more than 90% of HED cases, and EDA, on chromosome X, is involved in 50% of the cases. In this study, we explored an isolated case of a female Holstein calf with symptoms similar to HED.

Geographic classification of U.S. Washington State wines using elemental and water isotope composition.

Wine fraud leaves wineries vulnerable to damage in reputation and potential lost revenue. To reduce this risk for wines from Washington State (WA), USA, advanced analytical instrumentation and statistical methods were employed to geographically classify 133 wines from 4 major wine producing regions, including 70 wines from WA. Analyses of 37 elements and 2 water isotopes were performed with Triple Quadrupole Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry and Cavity Ring-Down Spectroscopy, respectively.

Ionic Nanocomplexes of Hyaluronic Acid and Polyarginine to Form Solid Materials: A Green Methodology to Obtain Sponges with Biomedical Potential.

We report on the design, development, characterization, and a preliminary cellular evaluation of a novel solid material. This material is composed of low-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid (LMWHA) and polyarginine (PArg), which generate aqueous ionic nanocomplexes (INC) that are then freeze-dried to create the final product. Different ratios of LMWHA/PArg were selected to elaborate INC, the size and zeta potential of which ranged from 100 to 200 nm and +25 to -43 mV, respectively.

Evaluation of microvascular invasion as a prognostic factor in the progression of non-metastatic renal cancer.

Introduction: The aim of this study was to describe the prognostic impact of microvascular invasion (MVI) in patients with non-metastatic renal cell cancer.

Material And Methods: We carried out a retrospective, descriptive and analytical study of patients with non-metastatic renal cell carcinoma who had undergone a radical or partial nephrectomy. Patients were divided according to the presence of MVI.

Introduction: Various authors argued that the voiding urgency component in mixed urinary incontinence (MUI) is different than urge urinary incontinence (UUI). In this last case they suggest that incontinence in MUI could be overdiagnosed in patients with SUI, misunderstanding the leak as UUI.

Objetives: To evaluate clinical and urodynamic characteristics of patients with MUI and pure UUI.

Aerogels made of chitosan and chondroitin sulfate at high degree of neutralization: Biological properties toward wound healing.

In this study, highly neutralized, highly porous, and ultralight polymeric aerogels prepared from aqueous colloidal suspensions of chitosan (CS) and chondroitin sulfate (ChS) nanocomplexes, formulated as quasi-equimolar amounts of both, are described. These aerogels were designed as healing agents under the inspiration of minimizing the amount of matter applied to wounds, reducing the electrostatic potential of the material and avoiding covalent cross-linkers in order to decrease metabolic stress over wounds. Aerogels synthesized under these criteria are biocompatible and provide specific properties for the induction of wound healing.
