Medical researchers are increasingly prioritizing the inclusion of underserved communities in clinical studies. However, mere inclusion is not enough. People from underserved communities frequently experience chronic stress that may lead to accelerated biological aging and early morbidity and mortality.

While the formal curriculum provides structured learning objectives and content, the hidden curriculum shapes students' socialization, sense of belonging, and access to opportunities within academic settings. For diverse students, hidden curriculum often reinforces existing power dynamics and inequities, creating additional barriers to their success.

Photobiomodulation with laser and LED is used to treat several comorbidities, can interfere in cell proliferation and viability, in addition to promoting responses related to the physical parameters adopted. Evaluate and compare the effects of laser and LED on mesenchymal cells, with different energy doses and different wavelengths, in addition to viability and wound closure.

Here, by analyzing metaproteomic samples collected from the Pacific, Atlantic and Southern Ocean, we reveal size-fractionated patterns of the structure and function of the marine microbiota protein pool in the water column, particularly in the dark ocean (>200 m). Zooplankton proteins contributed three times more than algal proteins to the deep-sea community metaproteome.

ACS may arise from the disruption of an atherosclerotic plaque, ultimately leading to acute ischemia and myocardial infarction. In the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis, inflammation assumes a pivotal role, not solely in the initiation and complications of atherosclerotic plaque formation, but also in the myocardial response to ischemic insult.

Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of dalbavancin as sequential therapy in patients with infective endocarditis (IE) due to gram positive bacteria (GPB) in a real-life heterogenous cohort with comorbid patients.
Methods: A single center retrospective cohort study including all patients with definite IE treated with dalbavancin between January 2017 and February 2022 was developed. A 6-month follow-up was performed.
Marine heterotrophic prokaryotes primarily take up ambient substrates using transporters. The patterns of transporters targeting particular substrates shape the ecological role of heterotrophic prokaryotes in marine organic matter cycles. Here, we report a size-fractionated pattern in the expression of prokaryotic transporters throughout the oceanic water column due to taxonomic variations, revealed by a multi-"omics" approach targeting ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters and TonB-dependent transporters (TBDTs).

Our objectives were to describe the prevalence and risk factors associated with carbapenem resistance (CR) and mortality in children with PA-BSI.
Methods: A retrospective, multi-centre study was carried out, including patients aged <20 years with PA-BSI in four tertiary hospitals in Madrid (Spain) during 2010-2020.
Background: Uterine fibroids are non-cancerous neoplasms that arise from the uterus affecting over 75% of women. However, there is a disparity with Black women having an increased prevalence of nearly 80%. Black women also experience increased symptom burden, including younger age at the time of diagnosis and increased number and volume of fibroids.

This study aimed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of oil-based gastric lavage (GL) compared with standard therapy for the treatment of AlP poisoning. Materials and methods.

Methods: Retrospective observational study of prevalent BSI at our institution from January 2019 to December 2022. In-hospital mortality was adjusted with a binary logistic regression model adjusting for sex, age, admission type and mortality risk for the hospitalization episode according to the four severity levels of APR DRGs.
Investigating the effect of different parameters of photobiomodulation (PBM) with low-power laser on multi-potent mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) derived from adipose tissue in terms of proliferation and cell death. MSCs were submitted to PBM applications with combinations of the following physical parameters: control group (no intervention), wavelengths of 660 and 830 nm; energy of 0.5, 2, and 4 J; and power of 40 and 100 mW.

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) derived from mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) have shown increasing therapeutic potential in the last years. However, large production of EV is required for therapeutic purposes. Thereby, scaling up MSC cultivation in bioreactors is essential to allow culture parameters monitoring.

Given potential delays in or omission of CRC screening in the absence of a PCP, we aimed to determine stage of CRC at diagnosis in an underserved population.
Methods: A retrospective chart review was conducted at two Los Angeles County safety-net hospitals.
Background And Aims: Smoking is considered the main cause of preventable death world-wide. This study aimed to review the efficacy and safety of cytisine for smoking cessation.
Methods: This review included an exhaustive search of databases to identify randomized controlled trials (RCTs) in health centers of any level with smokers of any age or gender investigating the effects of cytisine at standard dosage versus placebo, varenicline or nicotine replacement therapy (NRT).
Purpose: We investigated the role of fecal calprotectin (FC) and lactoferrin (FL) as predictive biomarkers in Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI).
Methods: We assembled a prospective cohort including all patients with a laboratory-confirmed CDI diagnosis between January and December 2017. FL and FC levels were measured at diagnosis by commercial ELISA and EIA kits.
Epidemiology and risk factors associated to bacterial resistance in solid organ cancer (SOC) patients has been barely described. This retrospective monocentric study analyzed clinical variables in SOC patients who developed bacteremia between 1 January 2019 and 31 December 2022. We described rates of bacterial resistance in Gram negative bacteria (80.

Pollution by chemicals and waste impacts human and ecosystem health on regional, national, and global scales, resulting, together with climate change and biodiversity loss, in a triple planetary crisis. Consequently, in 2022, countries agreed to establish an intergovernmental science-policy panel (SPP) on chemicals, waste, and pollution prevention, complementary to the existing intergovernmental science-policy bodies on climate change and biodiversity. To ensure the SPP's success, it is imperative to protect it from conflicts of interest (COI).

Methods: We conducted a prospective longitudinal study on the use of antimicrobials from the time the antimicrobial stewardship programme (ASP) was introduced in January 2016 to December 2017 (period 2 [P2]) in our children's hospital. We compared the obtained results on antimicrobial prescribing with retrospective data from the period preceding the introduction of the ASP (2014-2015, period 1 [P1]).
Background: Cardiac device infection (CDI) can occur in up to 2.2% of patients after device placement, with mortality rates exceeding 15%. Although device removal is standard management, the COVID-19 pandemic has been associated with resource diversion and decreased patient presentation for cardiovascular disease.

The recurrence of CDI is a growing medical problem. Data from real-life studies and one open label randomised clinical trial (RCT) suggest that secondary prophylaxis with oral vancomycin (SPV) during subsequent courses of systemic antibiotics is a promising approach for reducing the risk of CDI recurrence.
