The risk of inducing hypoglycaemia (low blood glucose) constitutes the main challenge associated with insulin therapy for diabetes. Insulin doses must be adjusted to ensure that blood glucose values are within the normal range, but matching insulin doses to fluctuating glucose levels is difficult because even a slightly higher insulin dose than needed can lead to a hypoglycaemic incidence, which can be anything from uncomfortable to life-threatening. It has therefore been a long-standing goal to engineer a glucose-sensitive insulin that can auto-adjust its bioactivity in a reversible manner according to ambient glucose levels to ultimately achieve better glycaemic control while lowering the risk of hypoglycaemia.

Introduction: Ileal pouch-anal anastomosis (IPAA) is currently the gold standard for restoration of gastrointestinal continuity after colectomy for ulcerative colitis in the UK. However, with further experience of the risks relating to IPAA, the use of ileorectal anastomosis (IRA) is being revisited. Decisions regarding restorative surgery after colectomy are individual to every patient's circumstances, and this paper aims to provide a comprehensive review of the literature to guide a full discussion of the risks and benefits of IRA.

This paper presents the design, implementation, and validation of an on-blade sensor system for remote vibration measurement for low-capacity wind turbines. The autonomous sensor system was deployed on three wind turbines, with one of them operating in harsh weather conditions in the far south of Chile. The system recorded the acceleration response of the blades in the flapwise and edgewise directions, data that could be used for extracting the dynamic characteristics of the blades, information useful for damage diagnosis and prognosis.

Background: Deep infiltrating endometriosis (DE) is a particularly severe disease which affects 10-20% of women with endometriosis. 90% of DE is rectovaginal and when suspected, some clinicians have suggested the routine use of flexible sigmoidoscopy to identify intraluminal disease. We aimed to assess the value of sigmoidoscopy prior to surgery for rectovaginal DE, both in terms of diagnosis and planning management.

It is widely accepted that the brain, like any other physical system, is subjected to physical constraints that restrict its operation. The brain's metabolic demands are particularly critical for proper neuronal function, but the impact of these constraints continues to remain poorly understood. Detailed single-neuron models are recently integrating metabolic constraints, but these models' computational resources make it challenging to explore the dynamics of extended neural networks, which are governed by such constraints.

This research extends the design of adaptive passivity-based controllers (APBC), proposing a normalized APBC (NAPBC) for nonlinear dynamical systems with a direction of control unknown. The plant also has an accessible single-input and a single-output, smooth behavior, linear explicit parametric dependence, and unknown parameters. The proposed method can handle unknown control direction through an alternate and more straightforward method than Nussbaum gains, having two fewer parameters.

Governments have responded to the Covid-19 crisis through various measures designed to reduce transmission and protect people judged to be at heightened risk. This paper explores the implications of such measures in the UK for disabled people, with a particular focus on measures designed to reduce and reshape the use of streets and public space. We divide UK measures into two broad categories.

Mutations in actin-bundling protein plastin 3 (PLS3) emerged as a cause of congenital osteoporosis, but neither the role of PLS3 in bone development nor the mechanisms underlying PLS3-dependent osteoporosis are understood. Of the over 20 identified osteoporosis-linked PLS3 mutations, we investigated all five that are expected to produce full-length protein. One of the mutations distorted an actin-binding loop in the second actin-binding domain of PLS3 and abolished F-actin bundling as revealed by cryo-EM reconstruction and protein interaction assays.

Failure prognostics has become a central element in predictive maintenance. In this domain, the accurate determination of the remaining useful life (RUL) allows making effective maintenance and operation decisions about the assets. However, prognostics is often approached from a component point of view, and system-level prognostics, taking into account component interactions and mission profile effects, is still an underexplored area.

Overclaiming questionnaires (OCQs), which capture or exaggerating one's knowledge about a given topic, have been proposed as potentially indicative of faking behaviors that plague self-report assessments in job application settings. The empirical evidence on the efficacy of OCQs in this respect is inconsistent, however. We draw from expectancy theory to reconcile these inconsistencies and identify the conditions under which overclaiming behavior will be most indicative of faking.

This article proposes a monitoring system that allows to track transitions between different stages in the berry harvesting process (berry picking, waiting for transport, transport and arrival at the packing site) solely using information from temperature and vibration sensors located in the basket. The monitoring system assumes a characterization of the process based on hidden Markov models and uses the Viterbi algorithm to perform inferences and estimate the most likely state trajectory. The obtained state trajectory estimate is then used to compute a potential damage indicator in real time.

Specific molecular recognition is routine for biology, but has proved difficult to achieve in synthetic systems. Carbohydrate substrates are especially challenging, because of their diversity and similarity to water, the biological solvent. Here we report a synthetic receptor for glucose, which is biomimetic in both design and capabilities.

The standard functional tool for gait assessment in multiple sclerosis (MS) clinical trials has been the 25-Foot Timed Walk Test, a measure of gait speed. Straight-line gait assessment may not reflect adequately upon balance and coordination. Walking tests with turns may add additional information towards understanding gait and balance status, and be more reflective of ambulation in the community.

The optimization of biological nitrogen removal (BNR) in sequencing batch reactors has become the aim of researchers worldwide in order to increase efficiency and reduce energy and operating costs. This research has focused on the nitrification phase as the limiting reaction rate of BNR. This paper analyzes different strategies and discusses different tools such as: factors for achieving partial nitrification, real-time control and monitoring for detecting characteristic patterns of nitrification/denitrification as end-points, use of modeling based on activated sludge models, and the use of data-driven modeling for estimating variables that cannot be easily measured experimentally or online.

Particulate matter (PM) is emitted during thermal decomposition of waste. During this process, aromatic compounds chemisorb to the surface of metal-oxide-containing PM, forming a surface-stabilized environmentally persistent free radical (EPFR). We hypothesized that EPFR-containing PM redox cycle to produce ROS and that this redox cycle is maintained in biological environments.
