A 72-year-old male patient with visual disturbance of the right eye was diagnosed with a small meningioma of the right optic foramen extending to the carotid cistern. The operation was performed through an individually tailored frontolateral minicraniotomy via a curvilinear skin incision behind the hairline. Endoscope-assisted microsurgical technique was used to resect the lesion.

Background: Iron chelation therapy (ICT) with deferoxamine (DFO), the current standard for the treatment of iron overload in patients with transfusion-dependent disorders such as beta-thalassemia, requires regular subcutaneous or intravenous infusions. This can lead to reduced quality of life and poor adherence, resulting in increased morbidity and mortality in iron-overloaded patients with beta-thalassemia. Deferasirox is an orally administered iron chelator that has been approved for use in the United States, Switzerland, and other countries.

Cord blood-derived CD133+ cells have a degree of non-hematopoietic potential and express transcripts of pluripotency markers including Oct-4, Sox-2, Rex-1, and leukemia inhibitory factor (LIF) receptor, as well as markers of progenitor cells, such as HoxB4, brachyury, and nestin. Having shown by transcriptome analysis that the mouse embryonic fibroblast (MEF) cells routinely used to maintain pluripotent embryonic stem cells express transcripts of the WNT/BMP families of signaling factors, we have assessed the effects on proliferation and differentiation of CD133+ cells of medium conditioned (CM) by MEF, by NIH3T3, and by NIH3T3 cells stably expressing WNT1, WNT3a, WNT4, WNT5a, and WNT11. Cultivation of CD133+ cells in MEF-CM led to a significant increase in cell number after 7 days of culture, while WNT-1, WNT3a-, and WNT11-CM increased the cell number significantly by 14 days of culture.

Background And Objectives: Iron accumulation is an inevitable consequence of chronic blood transfusions and results in serious complications in the absence of chelation treatment to remove excess iron. Deferoxamine (Desferal, DFO) reduces morbidity and mortality although the administration schedule of slow, parenteral infusions several days each week limits compliance and negatively affects long-term outcome. Deferasirox (Exjade, ICL670) is an oral chelator with high iron-binding potency and selectivity.

A comparative phase 3 trial was conducted to demonstrate the efficacy of deferasirox in regularly transfused patients with beta-thalassemia aged 2 years or older. Patients were randomized and received treatment with deferasirox (n = 296) or deferoxamine (n = 290), with dosing of each according to baseline liver iron concentration (LIC).

The emergence of infectious salmon anemia virus (ISAV) in Canada and the USA has led to the establishment of ISAV surveillance programs for cultured Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) and wild fish species, including Atlantic salmon. Current testing procedures for ISAV consist of viral culture, reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and indirect fluorescent antibody testing (IFAT), and require lethal sampling.

Listeria monocytogenes in an Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) processing environment.

The behavior of two strains of Listeria monocytogenes (147 and ATCC 19111) was evaluated at different stages of salmon processing. At lower temperatures of 2, 7, and 11 degrees C, L. monocytogenes survived on dry wood surfaces for at least 3 days without added nutrients but was unrecoverable after 2 days at 22 degrees C.

A liquid chromatographic (LC) method with ultraviolet (UV) detection was developed, using a reverse phase column with phosphate buffer (pH 6; 50 mM) as mobile phase and UV detection at 230 nm.

Imexon is a member of the class of 2-cyanoaziridine derivatives, which have been of interest as immunomodulators and anticancer agents since the late 1970s. For the scheduled phase I clinical trials a stable, sterile, injectable pharmaceutical dosage form containing 100 mg Imexon was required. Despite adequate solubility, its instability in aqueous media seriously hampered the pharmaceutical development of Imexon.

The purpose of the present study was to analyse specific advantages of calculated parameter images and their limitations using an optimized echo-planar imaging (EPI) technique with high spatial and temporal resolution. Isolation of infectious salmon anemia virus (ISAV) from Atlantic salmon in New Brunswick, Canada.

Infectious salmon anemia virus (ISAV) was isolated at a marine grow-out site in New Brunswick, Canada, from Atlantic salmon Salmo salar which experienced mortalities due to hemorrhagic kidney syndrome (HKS). Of 20 fish sampled in this study, 14 showed histologically various degrees of interstitial hemorrhaging, tubular epithelial degeneration and necrosis, and tubular casts in the posterior kidney, typical of HKS. Posterior kidney and spleen homogenates produced a cytopathic effect on chinook salmon embryo (CHSE-214) cells 10 to 14 d after inoculation.

Neurophysiological identification of the subthalamic nucleus in surgery for Parkinson's disease.

Microelectrode recording methods for stereotactic localization of the subthalamic nucleus (STN) and surrounding structures are described. These methods accurately define targets for chronic deep brain stimulation in the treatment of Parkinson's disease. Mean firing rates and a burst index were determined for all recorded neurons, and responses to active and passive limb and orofacial movements were tested.

Angiogenesis and brain oedema in intracranial meningiomas: influence of vascular endothelial growth factor.

The correlation between angiographic neovascularization, peritumoural brain oedema (PTBOe) and the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), was analysed in 30 patients with intracranial meningiomas. Pre-operative angiograms were examined for the existence of either an exclusively dural tumour blush or an additionally pial tumour supply from cerebral arteries. Furthermore the presence of macroscopic tumour-neovascularization and dysplastic changes of tumour-draining cerebral veins was evaluated.

The importance of pial blood supply to the development of peritumoral brain edema in meningiomas.

In a retrospective analysis, the authors studied the pial and dural blood supplies in 74 intracranial meningiomas and quantified their associated peritumoral brain edema (PTBE). The extent and localization of pial blush in relation to the total tumor volume were determined angiographically. The amount of edema and tumor size were calculated using computerized tomography.

Primary Candida albicans empyema associated with epidural hematomas in craniocervical junction.

The case of a 27-year-old patient with chronic candida empyema in the craniocervical junction is presented. Occlusive hydrocephalus at admittance, primary subdural candida empyema, and recurrent epidural bleedings are the outstanding features in the clinical course. Despite intact immunity this patient acquired primary candidosis of CNS.

Chondroma of the cerebellopontine angle. Case report.

A patient is reported who had a solitary chondroma of the cerebellopontine angle. The tumor was totally removed. The diagnostic value of CT-scanning and MRI in this rare pathological condition are discussed.

Three-dimensional chemical shift-selective MRI of a ruptured intracranial dermoid cyst.

We report a man with a ruptured intracranial dermoid cyst, suffering from headache, nausea, vomiting and a generalised seizure. MRI was performed before and 2 weeks after surgical resection. On T1-weighted images the tumour gave high signal, as did fatty material in the frontal and parietal brain sulci.

Giant cell tumor of the occipital bone in a case of von Recklinghausen neurofibromatosis.

Von Recklinghausen neurofibromatosis (NF1) is the most common hereditary syndrome predisposing to neoplasia. The most common symptomatic manifestation of NF1 is the plexiform neurofibroma. We describe the case of a patient with classical von Recklinghausen neurofibromatosis presenting with a giant cell tumor (GCT) of the occipital bone infiltrating a surrounding plexiform neurofibroma.
