Isolated External Iliac Artery Aneurysm with Fibromuscular Dysplasia.

Isolated aneurysms of the external iliac artery are rare in patients with fibromuscular dysplasia. In this study, we report the case of a 74-year-old man with advanced gastric cancer who was found to have a medium-sized aneurysm of the external iliac artery (35 mm) on preoperative computed tomography angiograms. The patient underwent laparoscopic gastrectomy followed by replacement of the external iliac artery 6 months later.

[A case of transverse colon cancer with idiopathic mesenteric phlebosclerosis].

A 74-year-old male was diagnosed with transverse colon carcinoma with idiopathic mesenteric phlebosclerosis (IMP). Extended right hemicolectomy with regional lymph node dissection was performed. It has been reported that IMP develops after taking Chinese herbs containing SANSIS for a long time.

Comparison between retroperitoneal leiomyosarcoma and dedifferentiated liposarcoma.

It is important to distinguish between leiomyosarcoma (LMS) and dedifferentiated liposarcoma (DDLS) in the retroperitoneum. The dedifferentiated component of DDLS shows an LMS-like morphology in some cases; thus, detailed evaluation is necessary to achieve an accurate diagnosis. Immunohistochemically, MDM2 and myogenic markers provide clues for the diagnoses.

Changes to Muscle T₂after Single-finger Exercise Measured with 0.2T MR Imaging.

We constructed an arm holder for muscle exercise from a forearm-shaped plastic shell and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging position markers and determined the echo time (39 ms) for T₂-weighted spin-echo MR imaging from T₂values of the exercised (50 ms) and resting (32 ms) muscle at 0.2 tesla. The smallest detectable muscle was the extensor digiti minimi muscle (cross-sectional area 25 mm²).

Crystallographic characterization of the C-terminal coiled-coil region of mouse Bicaudal-D1 (BICD1).

Bicaudal-D1 (BICD1) is an α-helical coiled-coil protein which is evolutionarily conserved from Drosophila to mammals and facilitates the attachment of specific cargo factors to the dynein motor complex. The C-terminal coiled-coil region (CC3) of BICD1 plays an important role in sorting cargo, linking proteins such as the small GTPase Rab6 and the nuclear pore complex component Ran-binding protein 2 (RanBP2) to the dynein motor complex. This report describes the crystallization and X-ray data collection of the BICD1 CC3 region, as well as the preparation of the complex of BICD1 CC3 with a constitutively active mutant of Rab6.

Efficacy of early anticoagulant therapy for venous thromboembolism in polytrauma patients in the acute phase.

Objective: To determine whether antithrombotic therapy with warfarin is effective and safe in patients who developed venous thromboembolism in the acute stage of polytrauma, which is associated with bleeding risk.

N(2)O induces mitotic polyploidization in anther somatic cells and restores fertility in sterile interspecific hybrid lilies.

Fertile plants undergoing male gametogenesis can be treated with nitrous oxide (N(2)O) gas to obtain 2n male gametes. N(2)O treatment is also expected to restore the fertility of interspecific hybrids through meiotic restitution or mitotic amphidiploidization. However, this technique has few applications to date, and it is un-known how N(2)O treatment restores fertility in sterile hybrids.

Increased signal intensity in the normal glenoid labrum in MR imaging: diagnostic pitfalls caused by the magic-angle effect.

Purpose: To determine the effect of the magic-angle effect on the MR signal in the posterosuperior portion of the glenoid labrum.

Methods: MR imaging of 15 arthroscopically evaluated shoulders, five with posterosuperior labrum injury and ten intact, was retrospectively reviewed. In the first part of the study, the signal intensity of the posterosuperior labrum on gradient-recalled echo (GRE) T2*-weighted axial images was correlated with the arthroscopy findings.

An elevation of stem cell factor in patients with hyperthyroid Graves' disease.

Graves' disease is an autoimmune disorder characterized by the presence of antibodies against thyrotropin receptor (TRAb). Stem cell factor (SCF), derived from bone marrow, is known to promote lymphohematopoiesis. To investigate the relation between the alteration in plasma levels of SCF, thyroid hormone status, and TRAb measured by thyrotropin binding inhibition (TBI), 13 untreated, 21 treated, and 4 relapsed hyperthyroid Graves' disease patients, 21 patients with Hashimoto's thyroiditis, 6 patients with subacute thyroiditis, and 11 control subjects were examined.

[Accuracy and clinical utility of quantitative proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) on phantom and chronic cerebral ischemia].

We quantified the concentration of metabolites observed by proton MRS using the tissue water signal as an internal standard. A phantom containing known concentrations of NAA (10 mM) and Cr (5 mM) was used for the study of methodological accuracy. Clinical utility was evaluated by the measurement of patients with severe stenosis or obstruction of the unilateral internal carotid artery.

[Detection of neural crest tumors by 123I-MIBG scintigraphy].

From January 1993 to January 1994, scintigraphy with 123I-MIBG and/or 131I-MIBG were performed in 22 patients and their scintigraphic usefulness was evaluated. Iodine-123 MIBG and 131I-MIBG scintigrams were obtained 24 hours after injection of 222 MBq of 123I-MIBG and 48 hours after injection of 20 MBq of 131I-MIBG, respectively. In two patients with pheochromocytoma, the 123I-MIBG and 131I-MIBG scans were performed and both images were compared.

Studies on the association of NIDDM in Japanese patients with hyperthyroid Graves' disease.

We attempted to analyze the association of hyperthyroid Graves' disease with non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM). Forty-nine patients (23 males and 26 females; 7.6%) of a total of 647 patients with hyperthyroid Graves' disease had NIDDM, several years before or after Graves' disease was diagnosed.

[A case of primary anterior mediastinal choriocarcinoma].

A 25-year-old man was admitted to our hospital because of hemosputum and abnormal shadows on chest X-ray film. The chest film showed a mass shadow located in the right hilum and multiple coin lesions in bilateral lung fields. The chest CT scan showed a bulky mass sized 7 cm X 6 cm at the anterior mediastinum.

[An echocardiographic study of alcoholic cardiomyopathy after total abstinence].

Left ventricular function of alcoholic cardiomyopathy with congestive heart failure was investigated by echocardiography during total abstinence for six months. In five of 13 cases, left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) was normalized to 55% or more and left ventricular end-diastolic dimension (LVEDd) was reduced to 5.7 cm or less during the study.

Sonographic study of the endometrial responses to ovarian hormones in patients receiving ovarian stimulation.

A total of 486 endometrial sonograms from 60 cases were reviewed to study the endometrial responses. There was a significant change in the proportion of each sonographic criterion between the pre- and post-ovulatory phases. After ovulation endometrial image showed distinct changes, and its thickness increased.
