The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of early progesterone removal on pregnancy rates to fixed-time artificial insemination (FTAI) in presynchronized beef cows. Postpartum beef cows (n = 882) were randomly assigned to 1 of 2 treatments: 1) 7&7 Synch: cows received a controlled internal drug release insert (CIDR) and a 25-mg injection of prostaglandin F on day 0, 100 μg of GnRH on day 7, a second injection of prostaglandin F (PG2) at CIDR removal on day 14, and a second injection of GnRH at FTAI 60-66 h after PG2 (day 17); 2) 7&6 Synch: cows received the same treatment as 7&7 Synch; however, CIDR removal occurred in conjunction with PG2 on day 13, while FTAI remained at 60-66 h after CIDR removal (day 16). Ovarian ultrasonography was performed to determine follicle diameter at PG2 and FTAI in a subset of cows (n = 40).

Article Synopsis
  • The study assessed luteal color Doppler (CD) ultrasonography and blood levels of pregnancy-associated glycoproteins (PAG) for early pregnancy diagnosis in beef cows and their potential in predicting late embryonic/early fetal mortality (LEM).
  • A total of 212 postpartum beef cows underwent a fixed-time artificial insemination, with evaluations including ultrasonography on specified days and blood samples for PAG measurement.
  • The results showed high accuracy rates for both CD and PAG in detecting pregnancy, with no false negatives for CD, while decreased PAG levels were noted in cows that experienced LEM, indicating further research is needed to validate PAG as a predictor of pregnancy loss.

Article Synopsis
  • A study involving 1,049 Angus heifers examined the effects of delaying the injection of prostaglandin F (PGF) in a 14-day CIDR-PG protocol on estrus expression and pregnancy rates.
  • Heifers were randomly assigned to two treatment groups: PG16, which received their PGF injection 16 days after the CIDR removal, and PG17, which received it 17 days later.
  • The findings showed that heifers in the PG17 group had a higher estrus expression (57.8%) compared to PG16 (43.4%), but there was no significant difference in fertility rates between the two groups, indicating that while estrus expression improved with the delay, fertility did not.*

The hepatic porphyrias are a group of rare metabolic disorders, each of which is associated with a specific enzymatic alteration in the haem biosynthesis pathway. In South Africa (SA), a high incidence of variegate porphyria (VP) is seen as a result of a founder effect, but acute intermittent porphyria (AIP) is also encountered. The development of acute neurovisceral attacks is related to environmental factors, including medications, hormones and diet.

Background: It has been known for some time that the antiretroviral drug, efavirenz (EFV), cross-reacts in urine immunoassays for tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). Because published studies investigating this phenomenon are limited, cross-reactivity information for several immunoassays is lacking. Reports of possible false-positive THC results from clinicians conducting workplace testing prompted us to investigate cross-reactivity for assays frequently employed in our own setting.
