Background: Minimally invasive periodontic (perio) surgical procedures, piezocision, and micro-osteoperforation are useful techniques for accelerating tooth movement. These techniques also offer advantages in the orthodontic (ortho) and aesthetic domains. This study aimed to evaluate and compare the rates of lower anterior decrowding with piezocision and micro-osteoperforation.

Optimum duration of hyperventilation during electroencephalography.

Hyperventilation (HV) is carried out for 3 minutes as a standard activation procedure in most routine electroencephalographic (EEG) procedures. The cerebral blood flow (CBF) reduction and the accompanying cerebral vasoconstriction caused by HV is believed to be the mechanism of EEG activation during HV. Some advocate for 5 minutes of HV, although the optimum duration is unknown.

Changes in cerebral blood flow (CBF) in the human cerebral cortex during surgery were reported by Penfield. However, data on continuous CBF during seizures were not available until Carter et al developed a subdural CBF probe for measuring continuous CBF. This probe used thermal resistor methodology and was developed to study patients with head trauma.

Use of Ultrasound in Patients With Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: A Cost-Effective Solution to Reduce Delays in Surgical Care.

Purpose: Currently, electrodiagnostic testing, which comprises electromyogram (EMG) and nerve conduction studies (NCS), is the most commonly used method for confirming the clinical diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). Electromyogram and NCS can be costly, can require multiple visits, may induce anxiety, and may be painful for patients. The purpose of this study was to determine whether replacing EMG/NCS with ultrasound (US), performed by the treating surgeon, to diagnose CTS decreases time to surgery and the number of office visits.

Contrast-enhanced ultrasound of the neonatal brain.

Cranial US is an integral component of evaluating the neonatal brain, especially in the setting of critically ill infants and in the emergency setting, because cranial US can be performed portably at the bedside, is safe, and can be repeated whenever needed. Contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) involves intravenously injecting microbubbles to allow for improved visibility of large and small vessels to assess vascularity and is becoming a widespread technique to improve diagnostic performance of US across a broad spectrum of applications. CEUS has the potential to add value to routine brain US and become a useful adjunct to MRI in infants in need of bedside imaging.

Gallium 68-PSMA PET/CT for lesion characterization in suspected cases of prostate carcinoma.

Objective: To assess the feasibility of gallium 68 (Ga)-prostate specific membrane antigen (PSMA) PET/computed tomography (CT) to identify patients who truly harbor clinically significant prostate cancer (PCa) in a cohort of patients with clinical and biochemical/radiological suspicion of PCa.

Patients And Methods: A total of 118 patients with suspected PCa who underwent Ga-PSMA PET/CT between May 2015 and June 2016 were prospectively included. Final decision on performing biopsy was left to the referring urologist after considering the clinical data, scan findings and discussion with the patient.

Utility of 68Ga-PSMA-11 PET/CT in Imaging of Glioma-A Pilot Study.

Background: Imaging of gliomas remains challenging. The aim of the study was to assess the feasibility of using Ga-PSMA-11 PET/CT for imaging gliomas.

Methods: Fifteen patients with glioma from 2 centers were included in the study.

Rare Case of Intratracheal Metastasis Detected on 68Ga-Prostate-Specific Membrane Antigen PET/CT Scan in a Case of Thyroglobulin Elevated Negative Iodine Scan Syndrome.

A 64-year-old woman underwent completion thyroidectomy with upper tracheal ring resection and right-sided neck dissection for papillary carcinoma of the thyroid infiltrating the trachea and was given I radioiodine treatment. Three years later, she presented with hemoptysis. On evaluation, she had increased serum thyroglobulin and negative iodine scan (TENIS).

Epilepsy is the third most common neurological illness, affecting 1% of the world's population. Despite advances in medicine, about 25 to 30% of the patients do not respond to or cannot tolerate the severe side effects of medical treatment, and surgery is not an option for the majority of patients with epilepsy. The objective of this article is to review the current state of research on seizure detection based on cerebral blood flow (CBF) data acquired by thermal diffusion flowmetry (TDF), and CBF-based seizure prediction.

Investigation of the relationship between transcranial impedance and intracranial pressure.

Studies on piglets have shown that cranial bioimpedance (Z) measurements correlate well with invasively measured intracranial pressure (ICP). We have tested the feasibility of collecting transcranial impedance from a clinical device for measuring whole-body water content (ImpediMed SFB7). In the clinical study, 50 normal healthy volunteers had transcranial impedance measured using nine different head montages (forehead to mastoid (left/right), temporal to mastoid (left/right), forehead to temporal (left/right), forehead to occipital (left/right) and temporal to temporal).

Electrical stimulation of the anterior nucleus of thalamus for treatment of refractory epilepsy.

Purpose: We report a multicenter, double-blind, randomized trial of bilateral stimulation of the anterior nuclei of the thalamus for localization-related epilepsy.

Methods: Participants were adults with medically refractory partial seizures, including secondarily generalized seizures. Half received stimulation and half no stimulation during a 3-month blinded phase; then all received unblinded stimulation.

Automated epilepsy diagnosis using interictal scalp EEG.

Over 50 million people worldwide suffer from epilepsy. Traditional diagnosis of epilepsy relies on tedious visual screening by highly trained clinicians from lengthy EEG recording that contains the presence of seizure (ictal) activities. Nowadays, there are many automatic systems that can recognize seizure-related EEG signals to help the diagnosis.

Ictal asystole--late manifestation of partial epilepsy and importance of cardiac pacemaker.

Ictal asystole (IA) is a life-threatening complication of epilepsy and is a potential mechanism of sudden unexplained death in epilepsy (SUDEP). This entity has been proven by multiple case reports and small case series. The management of the patients with IA is still in early phase of discussion.

Co-regulation by Notch and Fos is required for cell fate specification of intermediate precursors during C. elegans uterine development.

The Notch pathway is the key signal for many cell fate decisions in the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans including the uterine pi cell fate, crucial for a proper uterine-vulval connection and egg laying. Expression of the egl-13 SOX domain transcription factor is specifically upregulated upon induction of the pi lineage and not in response to other LIN-12/Notch-mediated decisions. We determined that dual regulation by LIN-12 and FOS-1 is required for egl-13 expression at specification and for complete rescue of egl-13 mutants.

Functional reorganization of motor cortex due to brain tumor: a case report.

We report the case of a 39-year-old man with a brain tumor and 12 years of intractable partial epilepsy with secondary generalization. After extensive noninvasive and invasive evaluation the seizure focus was localized to the right fronto-parietal region. Functional cortical mapping (FCM) was performed after craniotomy and implantation of a subdural grid with 40 electrodes covering the epileptogenic focus and the adjacent cortex.

The relative localizing value of interictal and immediate postictal SPECT in seizures of temporal lobe origin.

Unlabelled: Although interictal hypoperfusion and ictal hyperperfusion are established localizing findings in partial epilepsy, their relative value is disputed. After a meta analysis of several published articles on SPECT brain imaging in patients with epilepsy (with extractable data on at least 6 patients per article), institutions using SPECT for evaluation of epilepsy have been encouraged to perform ictal scanning or interictal and postictal SPECT studies.

Methods: We compared the relative localizing values of hypoperfusion in video-electroencephalographically (EEG) monitored interictal SPECT (IISPECT) and hyperperfusion in immediate postictal or periictal SPECT (PISPECT) in nonlesional patients who underwent temporal lobectomies in our epilepsy center from 1995 to 1998.

The EGL-13 SOX domain transcription factor affects the uterine pi cell lineages in Caenorhabditis elegans.

We isolated egl-13 mutants in which the pi cells of the Caenorhabditis elegans uterus initially appeared to develop normally but then underwent an extra round of cell division. The data suggest that egl-13 is required for maintenance of the pi cell fate.

A study to determine the accuracy of a computerized algorithm for interpretation of EEGs.

The main use of computerized EEG has been in sleep studies. A comprehensive system of interpreting routine EEGs by computers has not yet been developed and is technically difficult. We have tried to incorporate computers in the analysis and interpretation of EEGs by using information obtained from visual analysis of EEG in the present work.

Altered expressions of VEGF mRNA splice variants during progression of uterine-peritoneal adhesions in the rat.

Problem: Postoperative pelvic adhesions contribute to infertility, pelvic pain, bowel obstruction, and difficult reoperative procedures.

Method Of Study: In the present study, a rat uterine-peritoneal adhesion model was developed to study the progression of adhesion formation during a course of 7 days following pelvic surgery. The distal 1 cm of each uterine horn and its adjacent peritoneum was abraded by six scratches with a scalpel blade, producing punctate bleeding.

DOT or not? Direct observation of anti-tuberculosis treatment and patient outcomes, Kerala State, India.

Setting: The Pathanamthittha District of Kerala State, India, where the directly observed treatment, short-course (DOTS) programme was started in October 1994.

Objective: To determine the frequency with which direct observation actually occurred within a district-level DOTS programme, and the association of treatment observation with treatment outcome under programme conditions.

Design: This retrospective study included 200 consecutive, newly-detected, smear-positive patients registered under the project between February 1995 and February 1996 at the District Tuberculosis Centre, as well as health workers responsible for providing directly observed treatment (DOT) who were separately and confidentially interviewed.

Zonisamide: a new antiepileptic drug.

Zonisamide (ZNS) is a relatively new antiepileptic medication currently available in Japan. Attempts to market the drug in the United States were thwarted by reports of nephrolithiasis by European and American investigators. However, successful marketing of the drug in Japan has resulted in a renewed interest in bringing the drug to the United States.
