View Article and Find Full Text PDFIn a randomized, double-blind, crossover trial of 5-week treatment period with placebo or rosuvastatin (10 or 40 mg/day) with 2-week placebo wash-outs between treatments, the dose-dependent effect of rosuvastatin on apolipoprotein (apo) B-100 kinetics in metabolic syndrome subjects were studied. Compared with placebo, there was a significant dose-dependent decrease with rosuvastatin in plasma cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL cholesterol, apoB and apoC-III concentrations and in the apoB/apoA-I ratio, lathosterol:cholesterol ratio, HDL cholesterol concentration and campesterol:cholesterol ratio also increased significantly. Rosuvastatin significantly increased the fractional catabolic rates (FCR) of very-low density lipoprotein (VLDL), intermediate density lipoprotein (IDL) and LDL-apoB and decreased the corresponding pool sizes, with evidence of a dose-related effect.

Both of these groups of antigens are present so frequently in the nasal mucus of patients with chronic rhinosinusitis that their presence together is likely to be a common event.
Objective: The objective of this study was to determine whether the combined presence of fungal antigens and staphylococcal superantigens exert a synergistic proinflammatory effect on peripheral blood lymphocytes from patients with chronic rhinosinusitis.
Virus detection methodology provides detection of dengue virus in the early phase of the disease. PCR, targeting cDNA derived from viral RNA, has been used as a laboratory-based molecular tool for the detection of Dengue virus. We report the development and use of three real-time one-step reverse transcriptase PCR (RT-PCR) assays to detect dengue cases and serotype the virus involved.

Objective: Phospholipid transfer protein (PLTP) is an important regulator in the transport of surface components of triglyceride-rich lipoprotein (TRL) to high density lipoprotein (HDL) during lipolysis and may therefore play an important role in regulating HDL transport. Background: Highly pathogenic avian H5N1 influenza virus is a major public health concern. Given the lack of effective vaccine and recent evidence of antiviral drug resistance in some isolates, alternative strategies for containment of a possible future pandemic are needed. Design: Twenty-three MetS men and 10 age-matched lean controls were investigated.
An increase in the number of reported melioidosis cases was observed in the first 4 months of 2004. These cases were associated with a significant increase in case-fatality rate compared with the past 5 years. Methods: Clinical and laboratory data were prospectively collected from workers who were hospitalized with fever. We compared the frequency of disease manifestations in these patients with historical data from other cases of dengue admitted to the same centre.
