The effect of coadministration of vitamin D and tramadol on serum kisspeptin, testosterone, oxidative stress levels and testicular histology in Wistar rats: a preliminary report.

Background: Tramadol, an opioid analgesic, is known to induce testicular damage and impair reproductive parameters. Vitamin D3, recognized for its antioxidant and protective properties, might offer a potential protective effect against tramadol-induced testicular damage. This study observed the effects of co-administration of vitamin D3 and tramadol on serum kisspeptin levels, testicular histology, semen parameters, testosterone levels, and oxidative stress markers in male rats.

Taxation and Incentives in Private Health Services Delivery in Nigeria: Opinion of Private Health Practitioners.

Background: Tax relief and incentives are utilized to encourage the private health sector to provide services that are advantageous to community health. The aim of this study was to explore the issues related to taxes paid, incentives provided, returns on investment, satisfaction with practice, and plans of private health practitioners who were conference attendees in Port Harcourt in 2021.

Methodology: A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out at two national events in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria in October, and December 2021, among conference attendees using self-administered questionnaires.

Heart failure in Nigeria: protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Background: Heart failure is now a significant contributor to the burden of non-communicable diseases in developing countries like Nigeria which is experiencing epidemiologic and demographic transition. The epidemiology of heart failure in this country is poorly characterized. The aim of the review is to determine the prevalence of heart failure, the associated risk factors, the aetiology, management, and outcomes of the condition in the country.

Relationship between Serum Uric Acid and Hypertension among Secondary School Adolescents in Ekiti State, Nigeria.

Background: With the seemingly increasing trend of childhood hypertension, high serum uric acid (SUA) levels might be an indicator of essential hypertension among adolescents.

Objective: To determine the SUA levels of hypertensive students and randomly selected controls and find the association, if any, between SUA level and blood pressure (BP) among secondary school students in Ido-Osi Local Government Area (LGA).

Methodology: The study was a nested case-control study conducted among selected secondary school students in IdoOsi LGA from June 2017 to March 2018.

Background: School environment entails the sum total of the physical, biological, social, and emotional environment within which members of the school community operate. It is essential to make the school environment healthy to promote and protect the health of school pupils as well as their safety. This study aimed at finding the level of implementation of a Healthy School Environment (HSE) in Ido/Osi Local Government Area (LGA) of Ekiti State.

Marfan Syndrome with Aortic Root Disease, Severe Heart Failure and Aortic Dissection- Two Case Reports.

Marfan syndrome is an uncommon inheritable connective tissue disease which affects the cardiovascular system. This paper presents two cases of Marfan Syndrome with predominant aortic root disease that were seen at the Cardiology Clinic of University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Enugu, Nigeria. Their biography, clinical features and echocardiography parameters were captured using structured questionnaire.

Sledge Hammer Impalement: a case report of challenges of managing a patient with a heavy pendant.

Introduction: Impalement injuries are well defined. Transfixion injuries involve impalement and are defined in terms of fixation usually to a large object.

Case Report: We report a spectacular case of sledge hammer impalement in the neck where the patient was transfixed, albeit to a small object, requiring movement of the patient and the transfixing object as a single unit.

Data derived Extrapolation Factors for developmental toxicity: A preliminary research case study with perfluorooctanoate (PFOA).

Guidelines of the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA, 1991) and the International Programme on Chemical Safety (IPCS, 2005) suggest two different default positions for dosimetric extrapolation from experimental animals to humans when the dosimetry of the critical effect is not known. The default position of EPA (1991) for developmental toxicity is to use peak concentration (or Cmax) for this dosimetric extrapolation. In contrast, IPCS (2005, page 39) states its default position for dosimetric choice in the absence of data is to use the area under the curve (or AUC).

Idiopathic Cerebrospinal Fluid Rhinorrhoea (An Uncommon Diagnosis): A case report and a Review of the Literature.

Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) rhinorrhoea is often seen among head injured patients from road traffic crashes or physical assault, and sometimes it is a complication of nasal surgical procedures. Intracranial tumours may also result in CSF leakage. Blood stained rhinorrhoea often occur at the time of initial insult or injury, while CSF rhinorrhea may be a delayed manifestation.

Evidence-based practice in arthroscopic knee surgery.

Knee arthroscopy is a minimally-invasive technique that allows intra-articular assessment and treatment of knee joint pathology. It has proven benefits of reduced patient morbidity, earlier recovery and mobilisation, and it is cost-effective. In this paper we review the anatomy of the knee joint, indications and contra-indications to knee arthroscopic use, and consider the main techniques of knee arthroscopy including types of anaesthetic, prophylactic antibiotics, theatre setup and arthroscopic portals, and post-operative care.

Knowledge and attitude of safety belt use among professional drivers in a tertiary Nigerian institution.

Safety belt (SB) use prevents and reduces the severity of injuries during motor vehicle crashes, and its use is influenced by the perceived risk inherent in any journey. Over the years, most studies have focused on the effectiveness of the belt among commercial drivers. This study assessed drivers' knowledge, attitude and use of SB in a tertiary institution in Nigeria.

Effect of hydrogen sulfide on cyclic AMP production in isolated bovine and porcine neural retinae.

Hydrogen sulfide (H(2)S) has been reported to exert pharmacological effects on neural and non-neural tissues from several mammalian species. In the present study, we examined the role of the intracellular messenger, cyclic AMP in retinal response to H(2)S donors, sodium hydrosulfide (NaHS) and sodium sulfide (Na(2)S) in cows and pigs. Isolated bovine and porcine neural retinae were incubated in oxygenated Krebs buffer solution prior to exposure to varying concentrations of NaHS, Na(2)S or the diterpene activator of adenylate cyclase, forskolin.
