Challenges and Recommendations for Improving Cancer Research and Practice in Nigeria: .

Background: Cancers, with increasing incidence and mortality rates, constitute a leading public health problem in Nigeria. As the burden of cancer in Nigeria increases, research and quality service delivery remain critical strategies for improved cancer control across the continuum of care. This study contextualizes the challenges and gaps in oncology research and practice in Nigeria, and presents recommendations to address the gaps.

Efficacy and safety of Mojeaga remedy in combination with conventional oral iron therapy for correcting anemia in obstetric population: A phase II randomized pilot clinical trial.

Background: To our knowledge, there is no prior randomized trial on the efficacy of Mojeaga remedy (a special blend of Alchornea cordifolia, Pennisetum glaucum and Sorghum bicolor extracts) when co-administered with standard-of-care for correction of anemia in obstetrics practice. This study determined the efficacy, safety and tolerability of Mojeaga as adjunct to conventional oral iron therapy for correction of anemia in obstetric population.

Methods: A pilot open-label randomized clinical trial.

Background: The impact of Chlamydia trachomatis on semen quality has been studied with varied results.

Aim: To determine the prevalence of antichlamydial antibodies and their relationship with sperm quality among male partners of infertile couples in Enugu, South-East Nigeria.

Materials And Methods: It was a cross-sectional study of infertile male partners of couples attending infertility clinics at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH) Ituku-Ozalla, Enugu, Nigeria.

Postnatal care services use by mothers: A comparative study of defaulters versus attendees of postnatal clinics in Enugu.

Introduction: Despite much emphasis on the reproductive health of women, maternal mortality is still high, especially in postnatal period.

Objective: To assess the prevalence of postnatal care use and reasons for defaults among mothers attending the child immunization clinics in Enugu, Nigeria.

Methods: This was a cross-sectional comparative study of 400 consecutive nursing mothers who presented at the Institute of Child Health of UNTH and ESUTH, Enugu for Second dose of the Oral Polio Vaccine (OPV2) for their babies at 10 weeks postpartum.

Effect of Sickle Cell Trait on Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type 1 Infection.

Introduction: Whereas several studies show that homozygous (HbSS) sickle cell disease protects against human immunodeficiency virus infection, it is not clear if human immunodeficiency virus infection is affected by the heterozygous state of the sickle globin gene (HbAS or sickle cell trait).

Objective: To evaluate the effects of sickle cell trait on the prevalence and severity of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 infection in a large patient population.

Methods: Hemoglobin genotype was determined by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) in 1,226 HIV-1 patients in Nigeria.

Perception of Synchronized Online Teaching Using Blackboard Collaborate among Undergraduate Dental Students in Saudi Arabia.

Blackboard is a collaborative virtual learning tool used for higher learning that has been found to be an effective and efficient means of interactions between teachers and students and offers effective educational information management. The aim of this research work is to assess the preclinical and clinical dental students' perception of Blackboard Collaborate as a quality teaching and learning tool as well as to find out areas that might appear as barriers to quality teaching and learning. This cross-sectional study was conducted online using survey monkey involving 245 dental students who had participated in the virtual classroom lectures during the pandemic with 18 students not completing the survey.

Modified micromarsupialization technique as an alternative primary treatment for ranulas: A case series in a resource-challenged economy.

Objectives: Ranula is one of the commonest salivary gland cysts that mostly occur due to mucus extravasation from the sublingual salivary gland. Treatment of this lesion is still somewhat shrouded in controversy and varies from conservative treatment to surgical excision of the causative gland.

Materials And Methods: This was a case series in quasi-experimental design that evaluated the outcome and complications of the modified micromarsupialization technique as a newly introduced treatment at our center for simple sublingual ranula over a 2-year period.

Hepatic Function Predictive Value of Hepatic Venous Waveform versus Portal Vein Velocity in Liver Cirrhosis.

Background: This study assessed the hepatic vein waveform (HVW) and mean maximum portal vein velocity (MM-PVV) on Doppler ultrasound in patients with liver cirrhosis (LC) and compared it with that of age and sex-matched controls. It correlated the degree of HVW abnormality and MM-PVV changes with liver function based on Child-Turcotte-Pugh (CTP) to determine which was more predictive of CTP.

Methods: Sixty patients with LC and 60 healthy controls were consecutively recruited into this study.

Background: This study aims to determine the relationship(s) of fetal liver length (FLL) to the gestational age, biometric parameters (BPD, FL, AC, HC), and fetal weight in third trimester pregnancies.

Methodology: This was a hospital-based cross-sectional study of 400 fetuses in normal third trimester pregnancies recruited from the Obstetrics and Gynaecology department of OAUTHC, Ile-Ife, Nigeria. The participants were between 20-45 years of age and their gestational ages ranged from 27-40weeks.

Background Children with sickle cell anemia (SCA) are predisposed to developing leg ulcers in early adolescence; however, the underlying physiologic mechanisms are not well understood, which hinders the development of prophylactic antiulcer interventions. Purpose To determine if occlusive arterial disease or abnormal hemodynamics exist in the lower limb peripheral arteries of children with SCA. Materials and Methods This was a prospective cross-sectional study conducted between July 2020 and May 2021.

Methods: This was a questionnaire-based study of 413 women who attended the antenatal clinic of University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH), Ituku/Ozalla, Enugu. The information obtained was analyzed using SPSS version 22.

Renal arterial resistance index among subjects with liver cirrhosis in a Nigerian population.

Purpose: To describe the relationship between renal artery resistance index (RARI) and liver function based on Child-Pugh system among patients with liver cirrhosis (LC) in Southwest Nigeria.

Methods: About 50 patients with LC and 50 controls were consecutively recruited into this prospective comparative case control study. Each LC patient was classed based on Child-Turcotte-Pugh (CTP) system after relevant tests.

Introduction: The simultaneous occurrence of multiple primary malignancies in a patient has been widely reported. Oral mucosal malignant melanoma is a rare lesion of the oral cavity. The occurrence of this lesion with a very rare skin sarcoma at the same time has never to the best of our knowledge been reported previously.

Effects of short inter-pregnancy interval on maternal and perinatal outcomes: A cohort study of pregnant women in a low-income country.

Background: Short inter-pregnancy interval (IPI) is a potential risk factor for adverse pregnancy outcomes. Previous reports from sub-Sahara Africa documented increasing incidence of short IPI but evidence is lacking in its effect on pregnancy outcome.
