Postpartum multiple vertebral fractures in a patient with osteogenesis imperfecta type I: A case report and literature review.

A 39-year-old woman with type I osteogenesis imperfecta reported experiencing back pain at 35 weeks of gestation. Two days following an elective cesarean section, the patient developed a Th12 vertebral compression fracture; 3 weeks postoperatively, she sustained an L3 vertebral compression fracture. The patient displayed a lumbar spine -score of -1.

Bacterial Cellulose Membrane Experimentally Implanted in the Peritoneum of Wistar Rats-Inflammatory Immunoreactivity and Oxidative Stress.

Bacterial cellulose (BC) has been used for various applications; however, studies investigating the immunohistochemical characteristics of the inflammatory and scarring component in BC implanted in the peritoneum in vivo have not yet been fully described. This study aimed to evaluate the systemic and organic safety of BC through oxidative stress, blood, and serum biochemical markers, as well as the late inflammatory response in rats, using histopathology and immunohistochemistry. Forty-three rats (26 males; 17 females) received BC in the peritoneal cavity (implanted group-IG), while twenty-seven rats (12 males; 15 females) served as the control (sham group-SG).

Serotonin reuptake inhibitor suppresses the activation of human platelets by a combination of thrombopoietin and collagen through inhibition of Rac and Rho/Rho-kinase.

Tramadol and duloxetine, reuptake inhibitors of serotonin and noradrenaline, are widely used analgesics. Cytoplasmic serotonin in human platelets reportedly regulates the activity of low-molecular-weight GTP-binding proteins via serotonylation, leading to the modulation of platelet functions. We recently showed that the combination of thrombopoietin and collagen in the low doses synergistically induces human platelet activation via Rac and Rho/Rho-kinase.

Skin health survey on atopic dermatitis among Japanese children: The Tohoku Medical Megabank Project Birth and Three-Generation Cohort Study.

Background: Precise skin phenotypic data are indispensable in accurately diagnosing atopic dermatitis (AD). Therefore, this study examined the interobserver concordance for AD and non-AD diagnoses between two dermatologists. AD prevalence determined by the self-reported physician diagnoses and the diagnoses determined from the United Kingdom (UK) diagnostic criteria were compared with the diagnoses made by the two dermatologists, using data from a skin health survey.

Combination therapy with paclitaxel and trastuzumab for human epidermal growth factor receptor 2-positive recurrent serous carcinoma of the uterine cervix: A case report.

Recent studies show increased expression of human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) in cervical cancer, but the efficacy of anti-HER2 therapy remains under-researched. Here, we present a case of recurrent HER2-positive serous carcinoma, presumably arising in the cervix, diagnosed by comprehensive genomic profiling, which responded to trastuzumab. The patient underwent a radical hysterectomy with concurrent adjuvant chemoradiotherapy.

Different psychopathological courses between chronic interictal psychosis and schizophrenia.

Objective: The clinical course of interictal psychosis (IIP) has not yet been investigated. We aimed to compared the psychopathology and time-relevant indices between chronic IIP (CIIP) and schizophrenia (SC) METHODS: In this comprehensive psychopathological study, patients with chronic psychosis with and without epilepsy (127 with CIIP and 187 with SC) were compared. Psychopathology was measured using the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS): total, negative symptoms (NSs), positive symptoms (PSs), and anxiety-depressive symptoms (ADSs).

Fractal Dimension, Circularity, and Solidity of Cell Clusters in Liquid-Based Endometrial Cytology Are Potentially Useful for Endometrial Cancer Detection and Prognosis Prediction.

Endometrial cancer (EC) in women is increasing globally, necessitating improved diagnostic methods and prognosis prediction. While endometrial histology is the conventional approach, liquid-based endometrial cytology may benefit from novel analytical techniques for cell clusters. A clinical study was conducted at the University of Fukui Hospital from 2012 to 2018, involving 210 patients with endometrial cytology.

Caste-specific development of the dopaminergic system in bumble bees (Bombus ignitus).

The dopaminergic system is involved in caste-specific behaviors in eusocial bumble bees. However, little is known about how the caste differences in dopaminergic system are formed during pupal stages in the brains of bumble bees. Thus, we investigated the levels of dopamine-related substances and expression of genes encoding enzymes involved in dopamine synthesis and metabolism, dopamine receptors, and a dopamine transporter in the brain of female Bombus ignitus.

Plasma Gelsolin Inhibits Natural Killer Cell Function and Confers Chemoresistance in Epithelial Ovarian Cancer.

Plasma gelsolin (pGSN) overexpression in ovarian cancer (OVCA) disarms immune function, contributing to chemoresistance. The aim of this study was to investigate the immunoregulatory effects of pGSN expression on natural killer (NK) cell function in OVCA. OVCA tissues from primary surgeries underwent immunofluorescent staining of pGSN and the activated NK cell marker natural cytotoxicity triggering receptor 1 to analyze the prognostic impact of pGSN expression and activated NK cell infiltration.

Extreme genome scrambling in marine planktonic cryptic species.

Genome structural variations within species are rare. How selective constraints preserve gene order and chromosome structure is a central question in evolutionary biology that remains unsolved. Our sequencing of several genomes of the appendicularian tunicate around the globe reveals extreme genome scrambling caused by thousands of chromosomal rearrangements, although showing no obvious morphological differences between these animals.

Evaluating Opt-In Vaginal Human Papillomavirus Self-Sampling: Participation Rates and Detection of High-Grade Lesions (CIN2+) among Unscreened Japanese Women Aged 30-39.

Cervical cancer incidence is increasing among Japanese women, which is partly attributed to low screening rates. This study examined the implementation of opt-in human papillomavirus (HPV) self-sampling among Japanese women aged 30-39 years who had not undergone cervical cancer screening, focusing on those requiring preconception care. The responses to the opt-in approach and effectiveness in detecting cervical squamous intraepithelial neoplasia 2 or worse (CIN2+) were evaluated.

Methionine restriction (MetR) extends lifespan in various organisms, but its mechanistic understanding remains incomplete. Whether MetR during a specific period of adulthood increases lifespan is not known. In Drosophila, MetR is reported to extend lifespan only when amino acid levels are low.

Long-term efficacy and safety of early alogliptin initiation in subjects with type 2 diabetes: an extension of the SPEAD-A study.

We previously reported in the study of preventive effects of alogliptin on diabetic atherosclerosis (SPEAD-A) that alogliptin, a dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitor, attenuated the progression of carotid atherosclerosis in subjects with type 2 diabetes and no history of cardiovascular disease. This extension study of the SPEAD-A trial investigated whether early alogliptin initiation improved long-term cardiovascular outcomes. The SPEAD-A trial randomized 341 subjects with type 2 diabetes to either alogliptin or conventional treatment to investigate the effects of alogliptin on atherosclerosis.

Cognitive dysfunction in drug-naïve late-onset temporal lobe epilepsy.

Objectives: To evaluate cognitive functions including memory in middle-aged and elderly patients with antiseizure drug-naïve late-onset temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE).

Methods: We performed assessments with the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-III (WAIS-III) and Wechsler Memory Scale-Revised (WMS-R) in 26 antiseizure drug-naïve patients with late-onset TLE, in comparison to 30 healthy subjects. We investigated the relationships between these cognitive function scores and clinical characteristics, seizure frequency, and frequency of interictal epileptic discharges (IEDs).

Synergy by Ristocetin and CXCL12 in Human Platelet Activation: Divergent Regulation by Rho/Rho-Kinase and Rac.

CXCL12, belonging to the CXC chemokine family, is a weak agonist of platelet aggregation. We previously reported that the combination of CXCL12 and collagen at low doses synergistically activates platelets via not CXCR7 but CXCR4, a specific receptor for CXCL12 on the plasma membrane. Recently, we reported that not Rho/Rho kinase, but Rac is involved in the platelet aggregation induced by this combination.

Maternal social isolation in the perinatal period and early childhood development: the Tohoku Medical Megabank Project Birth and Three-Generation Cohort Study.

Purpose: Studies examining the associations between maternal social relationships and early childhood development have mainly focused on social relationships after childbirth. We aimed to prospectively examine the associations between the transition of maternal social isolation from the prenatal to postnatal period and early childhood development.

Methods: We analyzed data for 6692 mother-child pairs who participated in the Tohoku Medical Megabank Project Birth and Three-Generation Cohort Study.
