Safinamide is an α-aminoamide with both dopaminergic and nondopaminergic mechanisms of action evaluated as an add-on to dopamine agonist (DA) therapy in early-stage PD. In this 24-week, double-blind study, patients with early PD receiving a stable dose of a single DA were randomized to once-daily safinamide 100 mg, safinamide 200 mg, or placebo. The primary efficacy variable was UPDRS part III (motor examination) total score.

The Movement Disorders Society (MDS) organized its 15th International Annual Congress of Parkinson's Disease and Movement Disorders in Toronto (Canada), on 5-9 June 2011. This year's theme was 'Behavioral and motor interfaces of movement disorders, from laboratory to patient care'. The congress was organized following a routine that has been well established through years of experience: with the exception of the first day, each day of the congress consisted of 3-h plenary sessions followed by parallel sessions, teaching courses, video sessions and skills workshops, fulfilling the educational purpose of the congress.

The present paper updates the observations in our cohort of patients and further details clinical phenomenology. Of 3178 patients consecutively referred to our Institutions from 1999, 1572 subjects had neurodegenerative diseases and 1718 psychiatric disorders.

In order to assess whether multisensory integration alters the activation timing of primary visual and auditory cortices as a function of the temporal offsets between auditory and visual stimuli, a task was designed in which subjects had to judge the perceptual simultaneity of the onset of visual stimuli and brief acoustic tones. These were presented repeatedly with three different inter-stimulus intervals that were chosen to meet three perceptual conditions: (1) physical synchrony perceived as synchrony by subjects (SYNC); (2) physical asynchrony perceived as asynchrony (ASYNC); (3) physical asynchrony perceived ambiguously (AMB, i.

The aetiology still remains a mystery and diagnosis is impaired by the lack of defined molecular markers. Autoimmune response remains the main topic under investigation and recent studies suggest additional non-proteic mediators of brain inflammation such as lipids.

NCSE is a common yet still under recognized condition and delay in diagnosis and treatment may be associated with increased mortality as well as cognitive/behavioral consequences. We described an epileptic female patient assuming carbamazepine (900 mg/day) and levetiracetam (3,000 mg/day), seizure free for more than 10 years, who developed NCSE during cefixime treatment, a third-generation cephalosporin compound that along with penicillins is classified within the b-lactam class of antibiotics.

We evaluated whether the combination of classical biomarkers, Aβ(1-42) , total tau, phosphorylated tau, and α-synuclein can improve discrimination of Parkinson's disease, dementia with Lewy bodies, Alzheimer's disease, and frontotemporal dementia. Aβ(1-42) , total tau, phosphorylated tau, and α-synuclein were measured in a series of patients with Parkinson's disease (n = 38), dementia with Lewy bodies (n = 32), Alzheimer's disease (n = 48), frontotemporal dementia (n = 31), and age-matched control patients with other neurological diseases (n = 32).

In animal models of Parkinson's disease, preladenant monotherapy improves motor function without causing dyskinesia and, as an adjunct to levodopa, it improves motor function without worsening dyskinesia. We aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of preladenant in patients with Parkinson's disease and motor fluctuations who were receiving levodopa and other antiparkinsonian drugs.

Descriptions based on phenomenological criteria distinguish six types of autoscopic experiences: autoscopic hallucination, he-autoscopy or heautoscopic proper, feeling of a presence, out of body experience, negative and inner forms of autoscopy.
Methods And Results: We report a case of a patient with he-autoscopic seizures.
We have previously shown that, in early stages of Parkinson's disease (PD), patients with higher reaction times are also more impaired in visual sequence learning, suggesting that movement preparation shares resources with the learning of visuospatial sequences. Here, we ascertained whether, in patients with PD, the pattern of the neural correlates of attentional processes of movement planning predict sequence learning and working memory abilities. High density Electroencephalography (EEG, 256 electrodes) was recorded in 19 patients with PD performing reaching movements in a choice reaction time paradigm.

Aims Of The Study: Earlier P300 studies were conducted when the prevalence of dementia with Lewy Bodies (DLB) was unknown. Our study aims to examine whether P300 abnormalities are present in DLB and to evidence possible differences between DLB and Alzheimer's disease (AD). A second aim of this study is to look for correlations between P300 recordings and EEG, as abnormal EEG variability has been described in DLB.

In particular, we investigated the neural correlates of motor planning and on-line adjustments of reaching movements in a choice-reaction time task. High-density electroencephalography (EEG, 256 electrodes) was recorded in 13 subjects performing reaching movements.

We are reporting the effect of PK, as a consequence of a life threatening event (earthquake), in a group of 14 patients with parkinsonism and dementia in Hoehn/Yahr (H/Y) stage 3-5. All the patients presented an extraordinary motor response during the earthquake that has recently stricken the Italian city of L'Aquila.

Assessments included PG-specific scales (Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale for PG, Gambling-Symptom Assessment Scale, South Oaks Gambling Screen) and assessment of expenditures and time spent gambling. Amantadine abolished or reduced PG in all treated patients, as confirmed by scale score and daily expenditure reduction.

Methods: SFMD were assessed by direct observation of symptoms in the year coincident (+/-6 months) with definite diagnosis of PD, DLB, Alzheimer disease, multiple system atrophy, progressive supranuclear palsy, or frontotemporal dementia, and by interviews with patients, caregivers, and general practitioners, and reviews of prior hospital admissions, in a cohort of 942 patients with neurodegenerative disorders. Matched groups of patients with PD and patients with DLB without vs with SFMD were selected for comparisons and followed up over 4 years.
Perampanel, a novel, noncompetitive, selective AMPA-receptor antagonist demonstrated evidence of efficacy in reducing motor symptoms in animal models of Parkinson's disease (PD). We assessed the safety and efficacy of perampanel for treatment of "wearing off" motor fluctuations in patients with PD. Patients (N = 263) were randomly assigned to once-daily add-on 0.

We present two further cases of the pharyngeal-cervical-brachial (PCB) form of GBS, with unfavourable outcome, showing dramatic dissociation between upper and lower body Symptoms. Both patients showed rapidly progressive motor denervation with disappearance of Compound Muscle Action Potentials (CMAPs) in upper limbs muscles. Sensory Nerve Action Potentials (SNAPs) were instead normal.

Our review summarizes the five main studies conducted to evaluate the efficacy and pharmacokinetics of ropinirole prolonged release (PR) in Parkinson's disease (PD). The PR formulation was developed with Geomatrix coating technology in order to obtain constant pharmacokinetics throughout 24 hours. The areas under the curve were not significantly different from those observed with similar doses of ropinirole immediate-release (IR) formulation, administered 3 times a day, but concentration fluctuations were less for ropinirole PR (2-fold vs 5-fold).

The analysis separated the PDD patients into two subgroups, called PDD non-fluctuators (PDDNF; CAF
Serum proteome investigations have raised an incredible interest in the research of novel molecular biomarker, nevertheless few of the proposed evidences have been translated to the clinical practice. One of the limiting factors has been the lack of generally accepted guidelines for clinical proteomics studies and the lack of a robust analytical and pre-analytical ground for the proposed classification models. Pre-analytical issues may results in a deep impact for biomarker discovery campaign.
