To investigate the safety of total body irradiation-based myeloablative conditioning (TBI-MAC) in adolescent and young adult (AYA) Philadelphia chromosome (Ph)-negative acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) patients treated with pediatric protocols, treatment outcomes of 106 AYA patients aged 16-39 years old undergoing allogeneic stem cell transplant (allo-SCT) with TBI-MAC in the first remission were compared according to chemotherapy types before transplant. Pediatric and adult protocols were used in 56 and 50 of the patients, respectively. The cumulative incidence (CI) of non-relapse mortality (NRM) and the overall survival (OS) rates were not significantly different between the pediatric-protocol and adult-protocol group (NRM: 4 % vs.

In supramolecular materials, multiple weak binding groups can act as a single collective unit when confined to a localized volume, thereby producing strong but dynamic bonds between material building blocks. This principle of multivalency provides a versatile means of controlling material assembly, as both the number and the type of supramolecular moieties become design handles to modulate the strength of intermolecular interactions. However, in materials with building blocks significantly larger than individual supramolecular moieties (e.

Article Synopsis
  • Late cytomegalovirus (CMV) disease is a significant complication affecting stem cell transplant recipients, occurring over 100 days after the transplant despite preventive measures like ganciclovir.
  • A study of 1,295 adult transplant patients revealed a 5-year incidence of late CMV disease at 1.6%, with specific risk factors identified including haploidentical related donors and preemptive therapy.
  • Late CMV disease is linked to higher non-relapse mortality and lower overall survival rates; thus, patients with identified risk factors need careful monitoring and management.

Pancreatic cancer is often advanced and invades the major blood vessels around the pancreas. Portal vein (PV) and/or superior mesenteric vein (SMV) resection is performed for radical resection. In such cases, end-to-end anastomosis is best if the remnant vein is sufficiently long.

Herein, we report a design strategy for developing mechanically enhanced and dynamic polymer networks by incorporating a polymer with multivalent brush architecture. Different ratios of two types of imidazole functionalized polymers, specifically poly(-butyl acrylate) (PnBA) and poly(poly(-butyl acrylate)) (PPnBA) were blended with Zn(II) ions, thereby forming a series of elastomers with consistent composition but varying network topologies. As the weight fraction of PPnBA increased, the melting temperature, plateau modulus, and relaxation time of the melt increased because of the increase in the crosslinking density and coordination efficiency.

Locally advanced breast cancer (tumor > 5 cm, widespread infiltration of the skin and muscle, or metastases to lymph nodes) is difficult to resect by surgery, and even when it is resectable, there is a high probability of local recurrence and distant metastasis. Therefore, systemic therapy should be administered first. However, as cutaneous infiltration progresses, the patient's quality of life is impaired by pain, bleeding, presence of exudates, and a foul-smelling odor.

Brush polymers have emerged as components of novel materials that show huge potential in multiple disciplines and applications, including self-assembling photonic crystals, drug delivery vectors, biomimetic lubricants, and ultrasoft elastomers. However, an understanding of how this unique topology can affect the properties of highly solvated materials like hydrogels remain under investigated. Here, it is investigated how the high functionality and large overall size of brush polymers enhances the gelation kinetics of low polymer weight percent gels, enabling 100-fold faster gelation rates and 15-fold higher stiffness values than gels crosslinked by traditional star polymers of the same composition and polymer chain length.

When performing esophageal reconstruction, a colonic pedicle graft is chosen as the next candidate to the stomach because of complications arising from the operation time and vascular anastomosis. Vascular anastomosis is not necessarily required for pedicle grafts, but it is necessary to perform additional vascular anastomosis in some cases. We herein report a case of superdrainage in which anastomosis of the colonic vein and the right internal thoracic vein was effective against congestion.

The high transmissibility of SARS-CoV-2 before and shortly after the onset of symptoms suggests that only diagnosing and isolating symptomatic patients may not be sufficient to interrupt the spread of infection; therefore, public health measures such as personal distancing are also necessary. Additionally, it will be important to detect the newly infected individuals who remain asymptomatic, which may account for 50% or more of the cases. Molecular techniques are the "gold standard" for the diagnosis of SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Various biological behaviors are fueled by "respiration", which is an example of catabolism. So far, we have reported various self-oscillating soft materials exhibiting bioinspired dynamic movements. These autonomous polymer systems are driven by the Belousov-Zhabotinsky (BZ) reaction, which is analogous to the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle that is an integral part of respiration.

A thermoresponsive ABA triblock copolymer bearing an aldehyde group on the thermoresponsive A segments was synthesized. The polymer formed a micellar assembly due to the hydrophobic interactions of the thermoresponsive segment above the lower critical solution temperature (LCST). In contrast, the ABA polymer assembly decomposed upon lowering the temperature below the LCST.
