Transvestibular Chondrolarynoplasty-Experimental Study in Cadavers.

Background: The neck, and specifically the prominence of the thyroid cartilage, can be considered a marker of male gender, which is often unwanted by transgender women. Chondrolaryngoplasty is traditionally performed using an open transcervical approach, which, while effective, leaves visible scars that can compromise patient satisfaction. Recent advancements, such as the transoral endoscopic vestibular approach (TOEVA), have emerged as promising alternatives, eliminating external scars and improving esthetic outcomes.

Perineural Invasion as Worsening Criterion for Salivary Gland Mucoepidermoid Carcinoma.

Mucoepidermoid carcinomas (MECs) are a form of salivary gland malignancy. They are classified according to histological grade and perineural invasion (PNI). In another cancer subtypes, positive-PNI suggests increased poor prognosis; however, the role of isolated positive-PNI salivary gland MEC can still be better investigated as a risk factor.

The Rationale for "Laser-Induced Thermal Therapy (LITT) and Intratumoral Cisplatin" Approach for Cancer Treatment.

Cisplatin is one of the most widely used anticancer drugs in the treatment of various types of solid human cancers, as well as germ cell tumors, sarcomas, and lymphomas. Strong evidence from research has demonstrated higher efficacy of a combination of cisplatin and derivatives, together with hyperthermia and light, in overcoming drug resistance and improving tumoricidal efficacy. It is well known that the antioncogenic potential of CDDP is markedly enhanced by hyperthermia compared to drug treatment alone.

Parotidectomy and neck dissection in locally advanced and relapsed cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck region.

Objective: To investigate the prognostic factors to developing parotid and neck metastasis in locally advanced and relapsed Cutaneous Squamous Cell Carcinoma (CSCC) of the head and neck region.

Methods: Single-center retrospective cohort study enrolling consecutive patients with advanced CSCC from 2009 to 2019. Seventy-four cases were identified.

Quality of life after sialendoscopy: prospective non-randomized study.

Background: The symptomatic (swelling and pain) salivary gland obstructions are caused by sialolithiasis and salivary duct stenosis, negatively affecting quality of life (QOL), with almost all candidates for clinical measures and minimally invasive sialendoscopy. The impact of sialendoscopy treatment on the QOL has been little addressed nowadays. The objective is to prospectively evaluate the impact of sialendoscopy on the quality of life of patients undergoing sialendoscopy due to benign salivary obstructive diseases, measured through QOL questionnaires of xerostomia degree, the oral health impact profile and post sialendoscopy satisfaction questionnaires.

Analysis of the status of treatment of benign thyroid diseases - a public health problem aggravated in the COVID-19 pandemic era.

Objective: Goiters and benign nodules detected in the thyroid are growing lesions and the COVID-19 pandemic have negatively impacted on their surgical treatment. The appropriate selection of patients to treatment will improve the overall health status. This article review will focus on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on treatment of benign conditions of the thyroid gland and their implications.

Initial surgical results of 500 Parathyroidectomies for Hyperparathyroidism related to chronic kidney disease - mineral and bone disorder.

Introduction: Surgical treatment of hyperparathyroidism related to chronic kidney disease is a challenging procedure even for experienced parathyroid surgeons. Over the years, adjuvant techniques have been developed to assist the medical team to improve surgical outcomes. However, medical staff in poor countries have less access to these techniques and the effectiveness of surgery in this context is unclear.

A brief history of salivary gland surgery.

Salivary gland neoplasms are a relatively uncommon disease, with nearly one case per 100.000 adults estimated per year and an overall incidence of 1% of all neoplasms. The benign neoplasms are majority and the prognosis depends on the histologic type, grade, localization, soft tissue infiltration, regional and distant metastasis.

Laryngeal chondroradionecrosis following radiotherapy.

Objective: to study larynx chondroradionecrosis related to radiotherapy and chemotherapy treatment and provide a treatment flowchart.

Methods: retrospective study with clinical data analysis of all larynx cancer patients admitted in a two tertiary hospital in a five years period.

Results: from 131 patients treated for larynx cancer, 28 underwent chemoradiotherapy with curative intent and three of them presented chondroradionecrosis.

Intratumor cisplatin nephrotoxicity in combined laser-induced thermal therapy for cancer treatment.

Introduction: Thermal ablation of tumors by Nd:YAG laser has been growing as a multidisciplinary subspecialty defined as laser-induced thermal therapy (LITT), and has been increasingly accepted as a minimally invasive method for palliation of advanced or recurrent cancer. Previous studies have shown that adjuvant chemotherapy can potentiate laser thermal ablation of tumors leading to improved palliation in advanced cancer patients.

Objective: Evaluate nephrotoxicity by early markers of renal function in treating head and neck cancer using intra-tumor injections of cisplatin combined with laser-induced thermal therapy (CDDP-LITT).

Facial nerve identification with fluorescent dye in rats.

PURPOSE The parotidectomy technique still has an elevated paresis and paralysis index, lowering patient life's quality. The correct identification of the facial nerve can prevent nerve damage. Fluorescent dye identifies nerves in experimental studies but only few articles focused its use on facial nerve study in parotidectomies.

Autotransplant tissue selection criteria with or without stereomicroscopy in parathyroidectomy for treatment of renal hyperparathyroidism.

Introduction: Several methods have been proposed to improve operative success in renal hyperparathyroidism.

Objective: To evaluate stereomicroscopy in parathyroid tissue selection for total parathyroidectomy with autotransplantation in secondary (SHPT)/tertiary (THPT) hyperparathyroidism.

Methods: 118 renal patients underwent surgery from April of 2000 to October 2009.

Intraoperative PTH cutoff definition to predict successful parathyroidectomy in secondary and tertiary hyperparathyroidism.

Unlabelled: In order to improve success rates in surgery of renal hyperparathyroidism, we evaluated intraoperative PTH (IOPTH) measurement utility.

Method: 86 patients underwent total parathyroidectomy with intramuscular presternal autotransplantation from 04/2000 to 10/2009 and were followed for 26.5 months on average (prospective cohort).

Parathyroid carcinoma and hungry bone syndrome.

We hereby report two patients with parathyroid carcinoma presenting extremely high calcium and PTH levels, severe bone disease, and palpable neck mass at diagnosis. They both underwent parathyroidectomy, and one of them evolved to lung metastasis. Important hypocalcemia was observed after surgery in both: after parathyroidectomy in one patient, and only after surgical removal of the metastasis in the other.

Facial reconstruction with a bone-anchored prosthesis following destructive cancer surgery.

Reconstruction of craniofacial defects following cancer surgery may be performed using several techniques and materials. This case report describes surgery for a large tumor, as well as the rehabilitation process which involved a craniofacial prosthesis covering the whole defect of the anterior brain, orbit, mid-face and hard palate. The results suggest that a craniofacial prosthesis anchored on titanium implants is a viable alternative as a retention system, and also a good alternative to other reconstructive surgeries.

Parathyroid hormone: an early predictor of symptomatic hypocalcemia after total thyroidectomy.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate if the measurement of peri-operative parathyroid hormone (PTH) is able to identify patients with increased risk of developing symptoms of hypocalcemia.

Subjects And Methods: Forty patients who underwent total thyroidectomy were studied prospectively. Ionized serum calcium and PTH were measured after induction of anesthesia, one hour (PTH1) and one day after surgery (PTH24).

Update on laser photochemotherapy: an alternative for cancer treatment.

Although major progress has been made in surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy for the treatment of malignancy during the last 20 years, there has been little improvement in the survival of patients with recurrent or advanced head and neck cancer. Because of the ease and accessibility for surgery and their loco-regional biological behavior, head and neck cancers serve as an ideal model to test combined laser energy delivered via interstitial fiberoptics and chemotherapeutic agents activated by photo-thermal energy as an alternative, less invasive treatment for cancer. A number of investigators have shown that anthracyclines and cisplatin are likely candidates for light or heat activation in cancer cells.

A critical analysis of 33 patients with substernal goiter surgically treated by neck incision.

Unlabelled: The possibility of needing a combined access, with neck and chest incisions makes the treatment of substernal goiter a challenge both in the pre-op and the intraoperative. We hereby, discuss a standardization of the surgical technique to minimize the need for a chest approach, making the substernal goiter a surgically treatable disease, through a single neck incision, and with low indices of complication.

Aim: To assess the substernal goiter surgically approach through a neck incision and to analyze the surgical complications.

[Hyperthyroidism related to McCune-Albright syndrome: report of two cases and review of the literature].

Introduction: McCune-Albright syndrome is a sporadic disease clinicaly characterized by polyostotic fibrous dysplasia, "café-au-lait" cutaneous spots and hyperfunctional endocrinopathies, such as precocious puberty, hyperthyroidism, acromegaly and others. The biologic physiopathology of the disease is based on an activating mutation of the gene for the Gs protein which mediates the activation of adenyl cyclase and subsequent gland autonomous secretion. The thyroid gland is usually involved in this disease, being hyperthyroidism the second most common endocrinopathy seen after precocious puberty.
