Overexpression of multidrug resistance (MDR) protein, P-glycoprotein (P-gp), on lymphocytes has been suggested to be implicated in the failure of glucocorticoid (GC) therapy in patients with ulcerative colitis (UC). However, whether the overexpression of P-gp in a class of patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is intrinsic or related to the administration of GC is unknown. Relative amounts of MDR1 mRNA expressed in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) were measured using the reverse-transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) technique in 25 UC patients having no history of GC administration, 25 UC patients having experienced GC therapy, 19 patients with Crohn's disease (CD) with no history of GC therapy, and 27 healthy subjects.

Immunohistochemistry for amyloid beta-protein (A beta) revealed extensive CAA in the intrasulcal meningeal vessels rather than in the cerebral cortical vessels. Diffuse type brainstem glioma is one of the most malignant types of brain tumors and the prognosis is extremely poor. The proliferative potential of these tumors is presumed to be very high, but there is little information about the cell kinetics of brainstem glioma because surgical resection is rarely performed. A rapid downshift in the growth temperature of Saccharomyces cerevisiae from 30 to 10 degrees C resulted in an increase in transcript levels of the antioxidation genes SOD1 [encoding Cu-Zn superoxide dismutase (SOD)], CTT1 (encoding catalase T), and GSH1 (encoding gamma-glutamylcysteine synthetase). The cellular activities of SOD and catalase were also increased, indicating that the temperature downshift caused an antioxidant response. In support of this, a simultaneous increase in the intracellular level of H(2)O(2) was observed.

Four sewage treatment plants based on an activated sludge process and a pilot scale plant for advanced sewage treatment located in Japan were evaluated for removal of estrogenic substances using in vitro recombinant yeast assay and chemical analysis. The results indicated that 17beta-estradiol (E2) significantly contributed to estrogen-like activity analyzed by yeast assay especially in secondary treated effluents. On the other hand, batch study showed that estrogen-like activity of spiked E2 was easily decreased by an activated sludge treatment.

Methods: Seventeen patients with CD and 33 healthy subjects entered into this study.
The reaction of 2,3,4-tri-O-benzyl-6-deoxy-alpha-D-glucopyranosyl fluoride, 2,3,4,6-tetra-O-benzyl-alpha-D-allopyranosyl fluoride, and 2,3,4-tri-O-benzyl-alpha-L-fucopyranosyl fluoride with 2,4-di-O-benzylphloroacetophenone, in the presence of boron trifluoride diethyl etherate, afforded, respectively, the corresponding 3-C-beta-D-glycopyranosylphloroacetophenone derivatives exclusively in anomerically pure form. Alternatively, the reaction of 2,3,4,6-tetra-O-benzyl-alpha-D-gulopyranosyl fluoride with 2,4-di-O-benzylphloroacetophenone afforded both the 3-C-beta-D-gulopyranosylphloroacetophenone derivative (4C(1) conformation) as the major product and the 3-C-alpha-D-gulopyranosylphloroacetophenone derivative (1C(4) conformation) as the minor product under identical conditions. Including the previously prepared C-glycosylphloroacetophenone derivatives that contain 3-C-beta-D-glucosyl, 3-C-beta-D-xylosyl, 3-C-beta-2-deoxy-D-arabino-hexosyl, 3-C-beta-D-galactosyl, 3-C-beta-L-arabinosyl, and 3-C-alpha-L-arabinosyl moieties, the conformation is dictated primarily by the preference of the bulky aromatic aglycon to orient equatorially, due to the strong repulsion of the aglycon.

Degrees of resistance were assessed in terms of IC(50) values in an MTT assay and the P-gp function was evaluated in terms of rhodamine 123 (Rh123) accumulation and efflux.

Methods: A prospective, randomised study was conducted on 345 eyes of 345 patients undergoing phacoemulsification and posterior chamber intraocular lens implantation. They received anaesthetic infiltration into the sub-Tenon's space through a conjunctival incision (115 eyes), infiltration into the posterior sub-Tenon's space (retrobulbar space) through a conjunctival incision (114 eyes), or injection into the intra-Tenon's space (subconjunctival space) without making a conjunctival incision (116 eyes).
Elution profiles of total lipoproteins, apolipoprotein B (apoB) concentrations in lipoproteins, and plasma triglyceride (TG) levels were examined in early-, late-, and non-lactating cows. Additionally, arteriovenous (A-V) differences were also measured to elucidate the uptake of TG and apoB-containing lipoproteins in mammary gland. We examined 26 autopsy-proven cases of intracranial malignant lymphoma (IML) in immunocompetent patients to determine the extent of neoplastic involvement of the central nervous system (CNS) and to evaluate the effects of radiation on the tumor and brain tissue. The amino acid analysis by high-performance liquid chromatography demonstrated that the umbilical venous/maternal and fetal/maternal ratio of serum proline concentration increased in EGF dose-dependent manner accompanied by the increase in the ratios of total fetal weight and placental weight to maternal body weight gain. These results suggested that EGF regulates fetal growth by, as one of its possible mechanism, promoting placental proline supply from mother to fetus.

To understand the mechanisms of telomere maintenance in human gliomas, telomerase activity, telomerase RNA expression and telomere length of surgically excised glioma samples were analyzed. Sixty-five percent of gliomas exhibited telomerase activity, the occurrence of which was not related to their histological malignancy scale. Not only the telomerase-positive gliomas, but also the telomerase-negative gliomas and normal brain expressed telomerase RNA, suggesting that the presence of telomerase RNA component does not indicate the presence of telomerase activity.
