Immunotherapy has revolutionized oncology care, improving patient outcomes in several cancers. However, these therapies are also associated with typical immune-related adverse events due to the enhanced inflammatory and immune response. These toxicities can arise at any time during treatment but are more frequent within the first few months.

Objective: Automated machine learning (autoML) platforms allow health care professionals to play an active role in the development of machine learning (ML) algorithms according to scientific or clinical needs. The aim of this study was to develop and evaluate such a model for automated detection and grading of distal hand osteoarthritis (OA).

Methods: A total of 13,690 hand radiographs from 2,863 patients within the Swiss Cohort of Quality Management (SCQM) and an external control data set of 346 non-SCQM patients were collected and scored for distal interphalangeal OA (DIP-OA) using the modified Kellgren/Lawrence (K/L) score.

In musculoskeletal imaging, CT is used in a wide range of indications, either alone or in a synergistic approach with MRI. While MRI is the preferred modality for the assessment of soft tissues and bone marrow, CT excels in the imaging of high-contrast structures, such as mineralized tissue. Additionally, the introduction of dual-energy CT in clinical practice two decades ago opened the door for spectral imaging applications.

Background: Recent reports suggested that dual-energy CT (DECT) may help discriminate between different types of calcium phosphate crystals , which would have important implications for the characterization of crystal deposition occurring in osteoarthritis.

Purpose: Our aim was to test the hypothesis that DECT can effectively differentiate basic calcium phosphate (BCP) from calcium pyrophosphate (CPP) deposition diseases.

Methods: Discarded tissue after total knee replacement specimens in a 71 year-old patient with knee osteoarthritis and chondrocalcinosis was scanned using DECT at standard clinical parameters.

Primary bone lymphoma (PBL) is rare and mostly represented by diffuse large B-cell lymphomas (DLBCL). Follicular lymphoma (FL), albeit commonly disseminating to the bone marrow, rarely presents primarily as bone lesions. Here, we studied 16 patients (12 men:4 women, median age 60 years) who presented with bone pain and/or skeletal radiologic abnormalities revealing bone FL.

Background: Hip osteoarthritis (OA) involves structural degeneration of different joint compartments, including femoral head cartilage, periarticular ligaments and the acetabular labrum. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying labrum degeneration in hip OA remain poorly understood.

Aim: To assess secretion of putative biomarkers for OA from explanted human labrum tissues under basal and inflammatory conditions and to determine whether these could differentiate between OA and calcification status compared to fracture controls.

While musculoskeletal imaging volumes are increasing, there is a relative shortage of subspecialized musculoskeletal radiologists to interpret the studies. Will artificial intelligence (AI) be the solution? For AI to be the solution, the wide implementation of AI-supported data acquisition methods in clinical practice requires establishing trusted and reliable results. This implementation will demand close collaboration between core AI researchers and clinical radiologists.

Tenosynovial giant cell tumor is a benign condition that originates from synovial cells within joints, tendon sheaths, or bursae and may present either in localized (benign) or diffuse (locally aggressive) forms. Currently, the primary treatment approach is surgical, yielding satisfactory results with low recurrence rates in the localized forms, whereas the diffuse type displays high recurrence rates. In parallel, clinical trials are underway to explore pharmaceutical treatment options for the advanced diffuse type.

Subchondral insufficiency fractures (SIFs) and SIFs with osteonecrosis (SIF-ONs) of the knee (previously misnamed spontaneous osteonecrosis of the knee (SONK)) are bone lesions that appear without prior traumatic, tumoral, or inflammatory event. Both conditions are characterized in the early stages by epiphyseal bone marrow edema (BME)-like signal at MRI. However, while SIFs usually heal spontaneously, they can also evolve to osteonecrosis (i.

Background: Odontoid fractures in association with a C1-C2 rotatory luxation reports are seldom found in the literature. The fusion between the lateral mass of C1 and C2 could be of interest to ensure adequate treatment in these particular cases. We report 23 cases where there was coexistence of an odontoid fracture and rotatory subluxation, which were treated surgically using cages between C1 and C2 or just traditional Goel-Harms technique.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly used in clinical practice for musculoskeletal imaging tasks, such as disease diagnosis and image reconstruction. AI applications in musculoskeletal imaging have focused primarily on radiography, CT, and MRI. Although musculoskeletal ultrasound stands to benefit from AI in similar ways, such applications have been relatively underdeveloped.

Purpose: To develop an isotropic three-dimensional (3D) T2 mapping technique for the quantitative assessment of the composition of knee cartilage with high accuracy and precision.

Methods: A T2-prepared water-selective isotropic 3D gradient-echo pulse sequence was used to generate four images at 3 T. These were used for three T2 map reconstructions: standard images with an analytical T2 fit (AnT2Fit); standard images with a dictionary-based T2 fit (DictT2Fit); and patch-based-denoised images with a dictionary-based T2 fit (DenDictT2Fit).

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is widely regarded as the primary modality for the morphological assessment of cartilage and all other joint tissues involved in osteoarthritis. 2D fast spin echo fat-suppressed intermediate-weighted (FSE FS IW) sequences with a TE between 30 and 40ms have stood the test of time and are considered the cornerstone of MRI protocols for clinical practice and trials. These sequences offer a good balance between sensitivity and specificity and provide appropriate contrast and signal within the cartilage as well as between cartilage, articular fluid, and subchondral bone.

A regional acceleration of bone remodeling may possibly follow biomechanical insults to the bone. This review assesses the literature and clinical arguments supporting the hypothetical association between accelerated bone remodeling and bone marrow edema (BME)-like signal intensity on magnetic resonance imaging. BME-like signal is defined as a confluent ill-delimited area of bone marrow with a moderate decrease in signal intensity on fat-sensitive sequences and a high signal intensity on fat-suppressed fluid-sensitive sequences.
