One possible hypothesis for pathogenesis of hepatocellular carcinoma is deregulated expressed adipokines (adipose tissue cytokines). Chronic inflammation in the cirrhotic liver adipose tissue is associated with a modification in adipokine secretion. Changes in serum levels of adiponectin are known to be associated with the development of insulin resistance.

Methods: The study was conducted on 180 patients (93 complicated and 87 noncomplicated) and 150 healthy subjects. Reverse-transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) was used to assess gene expression and real-time PCR was used to detect VDR genotypes.
