Article Synopsis
  • Traditional species recognition often relies on morphological traits, but new methods integrating genetic, morphological, and ecological data provide a more objective approach for identifying cryptic species.
  • Rock lizards, specifically within the genus Darevskia, serve as a case study, demonstrating that many members lack distinct morphological features, necessitating the use of comprehensive analyses.
  • The research identified seven candidate species in two complexes (D. chlorogaster and D. defilippii), employing molecular data and ecological modeling to support differentiation, with notable distinctions revealed through advanced statistical analyses.
