Stevens-Johnson Syndrome and Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (SJS/TEN) are rare but severe skin conditions, often triggered by medications, that can be life-threatening. These conditions frequently affect the eyes, causing ocular surface disease, which can result in visual impairment or blindness. Although the exact mechanisms behind SJS/TEN remain unclear, key inflammatory mediators such as IL-1β, IL-6, and RIPK3 are believed to play critical roles in inflammation, necroptosis, and regulatory processes.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the connection between thrombo-inflammatory and oxidative stress biomarkers and erythropoiesis-stimulating agent (ESA) hyporesponsiveness in chronic hemodialysis patients.
  • It included 96 patients, analyzing various biomarkers and clinical data to calculate the ESA-hyporesponsiveness index (EHRI).
  • Findings indicate that low body mass index (BMI) and high levels of L-type fatty acid binding protein (L-FABP) are significant predictors of ESA resistance, suggesting these factors could help identify patients at risk for reduced responsiveness to ESA therapy.

Complications with atherosclerosis can often lead to fatal clot formation and blood vessel occlusion - also known as atherothrombosis. A key component to the development of atherosclerosis and atherothrombosis is the endothelium and its ability to regulate the balance between prothrombotic and antithrombotic activities. Endothelial surface glycocalyx has a critical role in maintenance of vascular integrity.

Introduction: In this study, we profiled the levels of blood cellular indices, endogenous glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) and inflammatory biomarkers in a cohort comprised of pulmonary embolism (PE) patients, to determine their inter-relationships. Identification of this relationship may provide insight to the complex pathophysiology of PE and the predictive role of blood cellular indices in acute PE patients.

Materials And Methods: Plasma samples from PE patients and healthy controls were analyzed for thrombo-inflammatory biomarkers (IL-2, IL-4, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, VEGF, IFN-ɣ, TNF-α, IL-1α, IL-1β, MCP-1, EGF, D-dimer, CRP and MMP-9) using biochip array and ELISA methods.
