Background: Prostate cancer (PC) consistently overexpresses variant the (v) isoform of the cell adhesion protein CD44, and loses expression of the standard (s) isoform.

Materials And Methods: We re-expressed CD44 full-length (exons 1-20) or standard (exons 1-5 + 16-20) or enforced stable RNAi against CD44v, and the examined functional effects on PC. The effect of stable knockout of calcitonin, a paracrine factor, or its receptor, on CD44 was assessed.

The digestive vacuole plasmepsins PfPM1, PfPM2, PfPM4, and PfHAP (a histoaspartic proteinase) are 4 aspartic proteinases among 10 encoded in the Plasmodium falciparum malarial genome. These have been hypothesized to initiate and contribute significantly to hemoglobin degradation, a catabolic function essential to the survival of this intraerythrocytic parasite. Because of their perceived significance, these plasmepsins have been proposed as potential targets for antimalarial drug development.

A gene encoding a major 29 kDa surface antigen from Sarcocystis neurona, the primary causative agent of equine protozoal myeloencephalitis (EPM), was cloned, sequenced, and expressed as a recombinant protein. A cDNA library was prepared in the expression vector lambda ZAP from polyA+mRNA isolated from S. neurona merozoites cultivated in vitro.

Molecular cloning, characterization and overexpression of two distinct cysteine protease cDNAs from Leishmania donovani chagasi.

We have cloned and characterized two distinct cysteine protease cDNAs from Leishmania donovani chagasi. One of the cDNAs, Ldccy2, was isolated from a cDNA library prepared from total promastigote RNA while the other cDNA, Ldccys1, was isolated from a cDNA library prepared from total amastigote RNA. Ldccys2 has an open reading frame of 471 amino acids and Ldccys1 has an open reading frame of 447 amino acids.

Therapeutic value of partial excision of lesions combined with administration of an autogenous vaccine during an episode of cutaneous papillomatosis in cattle of Uganda.

The therapeutic value of partial excision of lesions combined with administration of an autogenous vaccine in calves during an episode of cutaneous papillomatosis was evaluated. Of 10 Holstein calves naturally infected with cutaneous papillomatosis, 5 were given 20 ml of autogenous vaccine in addition to undergoing partial excision of the lesions; the other 5 calves were not given vaccine. Results indicate that partial excision combined with administration of autogenous vaccine has some therapeutic value in calves with small pedunculated papillomas, but not in calves with large confluent lesions.

Cryosurgery of bovine squamous cell carcinoma of the vulva.

Sixty-two cattle with vulval carcinoma of various sizes were treated by cryosurgery using double freeze-thaw cycles. A cure rate of 88.7 per cent was achieved.
