Crohn's disease (CD) and Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS) are chronic conditions with overlapping inflammatory pathways. This research investigates the genetic association between AS and the requirement for more aggressive therapeutic interventions in CD, suggesting a likelihood of increased severity in CD progression among individuals diagnosed with AS. This study utilized two-sample Mendelian randomization (TSMR) to analyze GWAS datasets for AS and CD requiring second-line treatment.

Background The literature surrounding COVID-19 mortality in the elderly compellingly leans towards the elderly faring worse. The populations of such literature often combined the rural and urban populations or simply discounted the rural population altogether. Anecdotal evidence suggests that this stigma is misplaced and that the elderly are not always at risk of the worst health outcomes.

Introduction And Aim: Self-directed learning (SDL) has become an essential learning principle in medical curricula and a requirement of the professional accreditation standards. It has been advocated that SDL is an effective learning strategy for medical students to develop competence in knowledge acquisition and in promoting life-long learning. Although it has been presumed that problem-based learning (PBL) improves the learner's SDL readiness (SDLR), its effects are still debatable.

Article Synopsis
  • Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder triggered by gluten, and this study examines its potential genetic connections to other inflammatory diseases like asthma and eczema.
  • Using a method called two-sample Mendelian randomization, researchers analyzed data from various genetic studies and found weak associations between celiac disease and conditions like atopic dermatitis and asthma.
  • While the study found some statistically significant correlations, the practical effects are minimal, suggesting that these connections might not have important clinical implications and further research may not be necessary right now.

Conversion of CO into organic chemicals offers a promising route for advancing the circularity of carbon capture, utilisation, and storage in line with the international 2050 Net Zero agenda. The widely known commercialised chemical fixation of CO into organic chemicals is the century-old Kolbe-Schmitt reaction, which carboxylates phenol (via sodium phenoxide) into salicylic acid. The carboxylation reaction is normally carried out between the gas-solid phases in a batch reactor.

Background: Revision total hip arthroplasties (RTHA) are associated with a higher complication rate than primary total hip arthroplasties (THA), and therefore it is important for patients to have realistic expectations regarding outcomes. The aim of this literature review was to gather and summarize the available evidence on patients' expectations following RTHA.

Methods: A literature search was conducted in PubMed, PsycINFO, Cochrane, Google Scholar, Web of Science and Embase from inception to November 2023.

Pharmacogenomics (PGx) is a rapidly changing field of genomics in which healthcare professionals play an important role in its implementation in the clinical setting, however PGx level of adoption remains low. This study aims to investigate the attitude, self-confidence, level of knowledge, and their impact on health sciences undergraduate students' intentions to adopt PGx in clinical practice using a questionnaire developed based on the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB). A model was proposed and a questionnaire was developed that was distributed to 467 undergraduate students of all academic years from four different departments of the University of Sharjah (UoS) including medical, dental, nursing, and pharmacy students from September 2022 to November 2022.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) often presents with a wide range of complications, including respiratory distress, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), and hypercoagulable states with resultant cerebrovascular incidents. Intra- and extra-pulmonological shunts can further complicate patient courses, leading to persistent hypoxemia and paradoxical emboli, resulting in potentially life-threatening consequences, necessitating a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to patient care. Here we present the case of a 73-year-old male who experienced severe persistent hypoxemic respiratory failure, superimposed methicillin-resistant  (MRSA) pneumonia, and stroke with a previously undiagnosed patent foramen ovale (PFO) contributing to his clinical presentation.

The COVID-19 pandemic has severely impacted many industries, in particular the healthcare sector exposing systemic vulnerabilities in emergency preparedness, risk mitigation, and supply chain management. A major challenge during the pandemic was related to the increased demand for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), resulting in critical shortages for healthcare and frontline workers. This is due to the lack of information visibility combined with the inability to precisely track product movement within the supply chain, requiring a robust traceability solution.

To compare clinically and radiographically between the 3-D plates and the conventional two Champy's miniplates in the treatment of anterior mandibular fractures. It is a randomized clinical and radiographic comparative study between 2 equal groups of patients with isolated anterior mandibular fractures. Open reduction and internal rigid fixation was accomplished in the study group using 3D miniplates fixation while in the control group using the two Champy's miniplates.

Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) is one of the most common causes of morbidity and mortality in patients with type 1 DM. Due to severe acidosis, ketonemia and electrolyte disturbances it can lead to various complications in the body, which can be fatal in some cases. Neurological complications related to DKA include cerebral edema, cerebral infarction, brain herniation, cortical venous thrombosis.

Purpose: Visceral artery pseudoaneurysms (VAPAs) are uncommon in clinical practice but may have serious clinical outcomes up to death. Endovascular management is a safe effective alternative option to traditional surgical procedures. This study assesses the outcome of different embolic materials and techniques used in the endovascular management of VAPAs.

Background: High numbers of violence incidents against physicians are reported annually in both developing and developed countries. In Jordan, studies conducted on healthcare workers involved small number of physicians and showed higher percentages of violence exposure when compared to other investigations from the Middle East. This is a large study aiming to comprehensively analyze the phenomenon in the physicians' community to optimize future strategies countering it.

Emotion assessment in stroke patients gives meaningful information to physiotherapists to identify the appropriate method for treatment. This study was aimed to classify the emotions of stroke patients by applying bispectrum features in electroencephalogram (EEG) signals. EEG signals from three groups of subjects, namely stroke patients with left brain damage (LBD), right brain damage (RBD), and normal control (NC), were analyzed for six different emotional states.

  • Calciphylaxis, also known as calcific uremic arteriolopathy (CUA), is a serious vascular condition primarily linked to chronic kidney disease (CKD) and can lead to severe skin and tissue complications.
  • Diagnosis of CUA is challenging and relies on a high suspicion due to risks associated with biopsy, while imaging often shows extensive calcification in blood vessels, potentially resulting in gangrene.
  • The disease is systemic and can affect multiple organs, with this text noting the first documented case involving the penis, bladder, and eyes.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the 3 Incontinence Questionnaire (3IQ) in diagnosing types of urinary incontinence compared to video-urodynamics (VUDS) as the standard reference.
  • Data was collected from 200 women, revealing that the 3IQ classified 28% as having stress incontinence, while VUDS showed a higher prevalence of urodynamic stress urinary incontinence at 56%.
  • Although the 3IQ showed reasonable sensitivity for detecting stress urinary incontinence (43%), its performance was weaker for detrusor overactivity and mixed urinary incontinence, which indicates the need for careful interpretation when using the questionnaire in clinical settings.

Background: Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from exhaled breath from human bodies have been proven to be a useful source of information for early lung cancer diagnosis. To date, there are still arguable information on the production and origin of significant VOCs of cancer cells. Thus, this study aims to conduct in-vitro experiments involving related cell lines to verify the capability of VOCs in providing information of the cells.
