Objectives: To compare, retrospectively, the results of laparoscopic partial nephrectomy (LPN) to open partial nephrectomy (OPN) using a tumor size-matched cohort of patients. Limited data are available comparing LPN to OPN in the treatment of small renal tumors.

Methods: Between September 2000 and September 2003, 27 LPNs and 22 OPNs were performed to treat renal masses less than 4 cm.

The reaction of 5-(1-adamantyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazoline-2-thione 2 with iodoethane, 2-dimethylaminoethyl chloride hydrochloride or 2-piperidinoethyl chloride hydrochloride in ethanolic potassium hydroxide yielded the corresponding 5-(1-adamantyl)-2-ethyl or substituted ethylthio-1,3,4-oxadiazoles 3a-c. Interaction of 2 with formaldehyde solution and primary aromatic amines or 1-substituted piperazines, in ethanol at room temperature yielded the corresponding 5-(1-adamantyl)-3-arylaminomethyl-1,3,4-oxadiazoline-2-thiones 4a-m or 5-(1-adamantyl)-3-(4-substituted-1-piperazinylmethyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazoline-2-thiones 5a-h, respectively. All the synthesized compounds were tested for in vitro activities against certain strains of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and the yeast-like pathogenic fungus Candida albicans.

The electronic absorption spectra of 3-(naphthylazo)-5-phenylpyrazole dye (L) are studied in some organic solvents of different polarities. The spectra comprise three absorption bands, which are assigned to the corresponding electronic transitions. The pKa value of (L) in ethanol-water mixtures have been determined pH-metrically at different temperatures.

Objective: To determine the number of cases of statin-associated rhabdomyolysis reported to the Food and Drug Administration for 6 statins and to profile the cases.

Methods: A retrospective analysis of all domestic and foreign reports of statin-associated rhabdomyolysis between November 1997 and March 2000 was conducted. Outcome measures included the total number of reports (initial plus follow-up), the number of unique cases, age, gender, percentages of report codes and role codes, and frequencies of concomitant interacting drugs that may have precipitated rhabdomyolysis, outcomes codes, and report source codes.

Liver infection as a result of tuberculosis is well known; there are several histological lesions, the most important being epithelioid cell granuloma. There are 3 anatomo-clinic variants: military or micronodular type, macronodular or pseudotumoral and pericanalicular of cholestatic. A case of a 66 year old male with a diagnosis of hepatic pseudotumoral tuberculosis, confirmed by means of a laparoscopy, is presented.
