A Decade of Monitoring HIV Epidemics in Nigeria: Positioning for Post-2015 Agenda.

Background: Nigeria accounts for 9% of the global HIV burden and is a signatory to Millennium Development Goals as well as the post-2015 Sustainable Development Goals. This paper reviews maturation of her HIV M&E system and preparedness for monitoring of the post-2015 agenda.

Methods: Using the UNAIDS criteria for assessing a functional M&E system, a mixed-methods approach of desk review and expert consultations, was employed.

Nnewi is a rural Nigerian town with a human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) counseling and testing center which tests about 120 clients/d. The objective of this study is to determine the factors predicting positive HIV status at Nnewi. Review of records was done with age, gender, marital status, and occupation as variables.

Clinical features and preliminary studies of virological correlates of neurocognitive impairment among HIV-infected individuals in Nigeria.

In Nigeria, the incidence and prevalence of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-related neurocognitive impairment (NCI) are unknown and there currently exists little information related to the viral correlates rates of NCI. Therefore, studies were performed to examine the potential utility of applying an established neuropsychological (NP) screening battery and detailed NP testing to detect NCI and correlations with functional impairment and the presence of specific viral signatures among infected subjects. A total of 60 HIV-1 seropositive antiretroviral-naive individuals and 56 seronegative control subjects were administered the International HIV Dementia Scale (IHDS) and assessed for functional impairment using the Karnofsky performance status scale.

Challenges in treating malignancies in HIV in Nigeria.

Purpose Of Review: Sub-Saharan Africa has the largest population of people living with AIDS in the world, with Nigeria having the third largest after South Africa and India. With the advent of treatment programs, more people in Nigeria are now living with the virus but are at increased risk of cancer similar to the experience in other parts of the world. This review uses publications on HIV-associated cancers emanating from Nigeria in 2008 to map the current landscape of prevention, diagnosis and treatment of these conditions.

Predictors of sexual behavior among out-of-school adolescents in Nigeria.

Purpose: To examine the influence of specific demographic and socio-cognitive variables on reported condom use among out-of-school adolescents in Nigeria.

Methods: A cross-sectional study on a community-based sample of 1698 sexually active out-of school adolescents in Oyo state, Nigeria. Data were collected using a non-validated questionnaire administered by an interviewer.
