Microplastics (MPs) are globally recognized as an emerging environmental threat, particularly in the aquatic environment. This study presents baseline data on the occurrence and distribution of MPs in sediments and surface water of major rivers in southwestern Nigeria. Sorption isotherms were generated using batch equilibration techniques from CaCl, KCl, CaSO and Ca(HPO) background electrolytes. Linear partition coefficients decreased with increase in pH in the order: CaCl>KCl > CaSO>Ca(HPO), which reflect both the effect of the inorganic anion in terms of competition and the cation in terms of bridging interactions.
