Peste des petits ruminants (PPR) cause severe economic losses to many countries of the world where the disease is endemic. It has been targeted for global eradication by 2030 following the successful eradication of rinderpest in 2011. The proposed eradication program would benefit from efficient and relatively reliable diagnostic tools for early PPR virus (PPRV) detection.

Despite significant progress made in elucidating the mechanism of acute human leptospirosis in different organs, there is a paucity of information in organs such as the heart, pancreas, brain, and adrenal gland. This study was designed to establish leptospire dissemination kinetics and patho-morphological changes associated with these orangs in the guinea pig infection model using cultural isolation (CI), polymerase chain reaction (PCR), Warthin Starry silver stain (WSss), immunohistochemistry (IH), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Twenty guinea pigs were inoculated intra-peritoneally with a low dosage of 1 × 10 serovar Icterohaemorrhagiae and 10 as control using distilled water.

Cultural, histochemical, and immunohistochemical detection of pathogenic species in the kidneys of cattle slaughtered in two abattoirs in Southwest Nigeria.

The impact of leptospirosis on food animals and humans has not been fully elucidated. This study was designed to determine the prevalence of pathogenic organism in renal tissues of slaughtered cattle from two major abattoirs in southwestern Nigeria. One hundred and seventy (170) kidney samples of different breeds, ages, and sexes were collected and examined using cultural isolation, microscopic agglutination test (MAT), Warthin silver (WSs) impregnation and immunohistochemistry (IH).

The detection and documentation of pathogenic Leptospira serovars in wild captive and zoological garden animals are scarce in literature from Nigeria. The knowledge of the prevalence of prevalence of pathogenic Leptospira serovars in these animals as a zoonotic risk to workers, zoo visitors and the general public is essential. This investigation was carried out on archival kidney and liver samples of captive and Zoological Garden animals (66) of an institutional facility, submitted for necropsy to the Department of Veterinary Pathology between the periods of 2010-2015.

This study investigated the prevalence and renal pathology of leptospirosis in wild animals in Southwest Nigeria. One hundred and five kidney samples were examined from 10 different wildlife species (antelope) greater cane rat (GCR), hare, African giant rat (AGR), tree hyrax, civet cat, monitor lizard, python, bushbuck and partridge) using a combination of Ellinghausen McCullough Johnson Harris (EMJH) medium, microscopic agglutination test (MAT), Warthin- Starry silver stain (WSss) and immunohistochemistry.

Genotype effect on distribution pattern of maternally derived antibody against Newcastle disease in Nigerian local chickens.

This study was conducted to evaluate the variation in antibody from Newcastle disease (ND) vaccinated breeder birds and their progenies. The chicks were evaluated for maternally derived antibody (MDA) against ND virus and also the MDA transfer rate for each genotype. The local parent stocks were Frizzle-feathered, Normal-feathered, and Naked neck while an exotic parent stock (Anak Titan) was used for the purpose of comparison.
