A qualitative enquiry into lived experience and coping strategies of undergraduates with sickle cell disease in Nigeria.

Background: Sickle cell disease (SCD) is of serious public health concern. Paucity of literature exists on qualitative experiences of people with SCD, despite substantial research on the clinical signs and management of the disease. This study examined how SCD affects a range of undergraduate students' experiences, their academic achievements, relationships, mental health and healthcare utilization.

Spontaneous Globe Rupture following Prolonged Uncontrolled Elevated Intraocular Pressure.

We report two glaucoma patients who experienced unusual instances of spontaneous globe rupture. The patients arrived at the Bowen University Teaching Hospital's emergency ophthalmology unit with a history of bleeding from one eye without any history of ocular trauma. They were known glaucoma patients with poor control of their intraocular pressures (IOP).

Cluster-randomized controlled trial of intermittent preventive treatment in infancy using sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine (SP-IPTi): a pilot study in Nigeria.

Background: Malaria kills a child in sub-Saharan Africa every 2 min despite widely available interventions including intermittent preventive treatment in infants (IPTi). Since 2010, when World Health Organization (WHO) recommended IPTi, no country has implemented it. To our knowledge, no IPTi study has been conducted in Nigeria.

Filtered sunlight versus intensive electric powered phototherapy in moderate-to-severe neonatal hyperbilirubinaemia: a randomised controlled non-inferiority trial.

Background: Kernicterus resulting from severe neonatal hyperbilirubinaemia is a leading cause of preventable deaths and disabilities in low-income and middle-income countries, partly because high-quality intensive phototherapy is unavailable. Previously, we showed that filtered-sunlight phototherapy (FSPT) was efficacious and safe for treatment of mild-to-moderate neonatal hyperbilirubinaemia. We aimed to extend these studies to infants with moderate-to-severe hyperbilirubinaemia.
