Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is the most prevalent genetic disorder that results in end-stage renal disease. Although ADPKD patients experience long disease trajectories, factors such as hypertension, proteinuria and renal calculi have been observed to lead to rapid renal function impairment in patients with ADPKD. Furthermore, due to the distorted anatomy that makes access to stone difficult, the management of nephrolithiasis in ADPKD patients is one of the several special situations in which urinary lithiasis presents management challenges.

Waiting Times for Prostate Cancer Diagnosis in a Nigerian Population.

Background: Prostate biopsy remains an important surgical procedure in the diagnostic pathway for prostate cancer, but access to prostate biopsy service is poorly studied in the Nigerian population. While there has been a well-documented delay in patient presentation with prostate cancer in Nigeria, little is however known about how long patients wait to have a histological diagnosis of prostate cancer and start treatment after presenting at Nigerian hospitals.

Method: This was a descriptive retrospective study to document the specific duration of the various timelines in getting a diagnosis of prostate cancer at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, Nigeria.

Parental Post-operative Telephone Follow-Up After Paediatric Day Case Surgery.

Background: Paediatric day case surgeries (DCSs) are associated with minimal complications therefore the post-operative follow-up visit usually serves to calm anxious parents and is replaceable with a phone call. This study examines the safety and reliability of post-operative telephone assessment by caregivers and its acceptability to them.

Methods: Parents of DCS patients over a 9-month period were recruited for telephone follow-up on third post-operative day for wound assessment.

Background: It is established that antibiotic prophylaxis prevents infection following transrectal ultrasound-guided prostate biopsy. This study compares the infective complications in transrectal prostate biopsy (TRPB) in empirical versus targeted prophylactic antibiotics.

Introduction: Mainz II pouch urinary diversion in patients with muscle-invasive bladder cancer is one of the options of continent urinary diversion following radical cystectomy (RC). We aim to report our experience and the outcome of our patients who had this procedure.

Patients And Methods: Patients who had RC and Mainz II pouch urinary diversion for muscle-invasive bladder cancer in our institution from 2007 to 2016 were evaluated.

Use of Exogenous Testosterone for the Treatment of Male Factor Infertility: A Survey of Nigerian Doctors.

Background: Though exogenous testosterone is known for its contraceptive effects in men, it is sometimes prescribed by medical practitioners for the treatment of male factor infertility in the mistaken belief that exogenous testosterone improves sperm count. The aim of this study was to evaluate the scope of testosterone use in the treatment of male factor infertility by medical practitioners in Lagos, Nigeria.

Methods: A survey using a structured questionnaire was carried out amongst doctors attending a regular Continuing Medical Education (CME) programme in Lagos, Nigeria.

Outcome of radical retropubic prostatectomy at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital.

Background: Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in men in Nigeria and most cases present when the disease is already in an advanced stage. Radical prostatectomy for early prostate cancer is therefore not a commonly performed operation by urologists in Nigeria. We have had training and significant experience in radical retropubic prostatectomy.

Introduction: Prostate cancer (CaP) is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among Nigerian men but CaP screening is not a common practice. The true burden of the disease in Nigeria is not known. The study was aimed at studying the community burden of CaP in Lagos.

DNMT1 and HDAC1 gene expression in impaired spermatogenesis and testicular cancer.

DNA methylation catalyzed by DNA methyltransferases (DNMTs) and histone deacetylation catalyzed by histone deacetylases (HDACs) play an important role for the regulation of gene expression during carcinogenesis and spermatogenesis. We therefore studied the cell-specific expression of DNMT1 and HDAC1 for the first time in human testicular cancer and impaired human spermatogenesis. During normal spermatogenesis, DNMT1 and HDAC1 were colocalized in nuclei of spermatogonia.
