Background: The potential of stem bark as a safe antimalarial agent, and the identification of its antimalarial constituents was explored.
Materials And Methods: The air-dried stem bark was extracted with 70% ethanol, filtered and concentrated to obtain the extract (). The extract was successively partitioned to give -hexane (), dichloromethane (), ethyl acetate () -butanol () and aqueous () fractions respectively after determining the acute toxicity using Lorke's method.
Background: Mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and defective oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) have been proposed as possible mechanisms underlying the development of nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs)-induced mitochondrial toxicities. Available options in managing these complications have, so far, produced controversial results, thus necessitating further research into newer agents with promise. Antioxidant and free-radical scavenging effects of naringin, a plant-derived flavonoid, have previously been demonstrated.

Background: Toxoplasma encephalitis is a common presentation of Toxoplasma gondii infection of the central nervous system in the late stage of human immunodeficiency viral (HIV) infection. The definitive diagnosis requires demonstration of toxoplasma in brain tissue. However, neuroradiologic demonstration (using Computed Tomography or Magnetic Resonance Imaging) of ring-enhanced multiple or single focal intracranial lesions in the presence of immunosuppression and prompt response to presumptive therapy are diagnostic in the absence of histological facilities.

We had previously published a study evaluating and comparing 5 predictive formulas and their applicability in Nigerian CKD patients and normal subjects. The existing data from this study were re-analyzed and the 5 previous formulas compared with the MDRD formula.
