Methods used for collection and measurement of physiological parameters of peripheral lymph and interstitial fluid in man have been described, basing on the experience of lymphological groups from Warsaw and Oslo and on data from the relevant literature. The review consists of description of methods for chronic cannulation of leg lymphatics, collection of lymph from skin lymphatic vessels, measurement of peripheral lymph flow, lymph hydrostatic and oncotic pressures, collection of interstitial fluid with the capsular, liquid-paraffin cavity, wick and skin window methods, interstitial fluid hydrostatic and oncotic pressure measurement.

Some of the radioopaque material was retained in the bone marrow cavity and tiny lymph vessels originating in that area could be seen. Contrast medium filled also the popliteal lymph node.

Lymph flow increased by 83% during two hour ergometer cycling, and by 117% during two hour warm water foot bath. During a two hour period of venous stasis lymph flow dropped by 50%.

The twenty-four hour variation in concentration and output of total protein, lactate dehydrogenase and alkaline phosphatase has been studied in the peripheral lymph from the legs of 5 healthy volunteers over a period of five days. The highest concentration of these proteins was found in lymph collected during the first two hours after a night's rest. During the day a continuous decrease in concentration occurred without any direct correlation to lymph flow.

Anaesthesia with a mixture of halothane, nitrous oxide and oxygen was used for allogenic liver transplantation in 24 pigs. All animals had haemodynamic disturbances due to the technique of the operation: metabolic acidosis, disturbances of bioelectric activity of the heart and electrolyte level changes. The methods of management of these disturbances are discussed.

Antibody titers to varicella-zoster (V-Z), herpes simplex (HSV) and vaccinia viruses were determined in sera collected in Buffalo, NY, from patients with multiple sclerosis (MS), patients with other diseases, and normal individuals. The mixed agglutination test employing cell cultures infected with one of the above viruses as a source of antigen was used to determine antibody titers. The geometric mean titer (GMT) for V-Z in 59 MS cases was significantly higher than that observed in patients with other diseases and in normal individuals.

After 6-8 days the right lung showed slight subpleural areas of atelectasis and edema. Edema of endothelial cells of the lung septal capilaries was observed electron-microscopically.

A preliminary diagnosis of acinic cell carcinoma established by light microscopy was confirmed by electron microscopic study. Glandular arrangement of cancerous cells and the presence of a specific type of secretory granules in their cytoplasm were the most characteristic ultrastructural features of the acinic cell carcinoma.
