Yet, data on the to which extent complement, and more specifically the alternative complement pathway, is activated in patients with carotid atherosclerosis and related to adverse outcome in these patients, are scarce.
Methods And Results: We measured, by ELISA, plasma levels of factor D, properdin, C3bBbP (C3 convertase), and factor H in patients with advanced carotid atherosclerosis in a (n=324) and in a (n=206) cohort in relation to adverse outcome (mean follow-up 7.
Maize lethal necrosis (MLN) is a significant threat to food security in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), with limited commercial inbred lines displaying tolerance. This study analyzed the transcriptomes of four commercially used maize inbred lines and a non-adapted inbred line, all with varying response levels to MLN. RNA-Seq revealed differentially expressed genes in response to infection by maize chlorotic mottle virus (MCMV) and sugarcane mosaic virus (SCMV), the causative agents of MLN.

Mice lacking CD38 are very susceptible to acute bacterial infections, implicating CD38 in innate immune responses. The effects of CD38 inhibition on NLRP3 inflammasome activation in human primary monocytes and monocyte-derived macrophages have not been investigated.

Vancomycin causes kidney injury by accumulating in the proximal tubule, likely mediated by megalin uptake. Protamine is a putative megalin inhibitor that shares binding sites with heparin and is approved for the treatment of heparin overdose. We employed a well-characterized Sprague-Dawley rat model to assess kidney injury and function in animals that received vancomycin, protamine alone, or vancomycin plus protamine over 5 days.

This assessment is required by Danish law to ensure that citizens receive solutions matched to their needs, including other services than the AT.
Aim: To investigate how Danish occupational therapists, involved in the AT service delivery process, perform the comprehensive assessment.
Background: The harm-benefit balance for early out-of-bed mobilisation of patients with severe acquired brain injury (ABI) in neurointensive care units (neuro-ICUs) is unclear, and there are no clinical guidelines. This study aimed to survey the current clinical practice and perceptions among clinicians involved in first out-of-bed mobilisation in Scandinavian neuro-ICUs.
Methods: This was a cross-sectional, anonymous, web-based survey; the reporting follows the recommended CROSS checklist.
Aims: TCF7L2 rs7903146 is the most impactful single genetic risk variant for type 2 diabetes. However, its role on disease progression, complications and mortality among people with type 2 diabetes at diagnosis remains unclear.
Materials And Methods: We assessed the per allele impact of the rs7903146 T-allele on clinical characteristics and complication risk in 9231 individuals with type 2 diabetes at diagnosis and over a 10-year follow-up period.
The increased burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) is fueled by lifestyle factors including diet. This cross-sectional study explored among Tanzanian adults whether unhealthy dietary patterns are associated with intestinal and systemic inflammation which could increase the risk of NCDs. The study included 574 participants, with both diet and inflammatory markers data.

Objective: To estimate incidence and healthcare costs and mortality associated with infection (CDI) among adults <65 years old.
Design: Retrospective cohort study.
Patients: First CDI episodes among commercially insured US patients 18-64 years old were identified from a large claims database.
Objectives: In this study, buprenorphine was the primary source of maternal opioid exposure at the time of initial prenatal evaluation. Current recommendations advise that level II ultrasounds be performed in patients with substance use disorders. For some patients, distance, transportation, and costs associated with obtaining ultrasounds from a specialist pose significant barriers.

Background: The Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS) is widely used in both clinical and non-clinical research to assess emotional regulation difficulties. To guide interpretation of scores, establishing thresholds for normative DERS scores is informative. However, despite its widespread use, to date no study has provided such threshold for youths.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFHybrid maize seed production in Africa is dependent upon manual detasseling of the female parental lines, often resulting in plant damage that can lead to reduced seed yields on those detasseled lines. Additionally, incomplete detasseling can result in hybrid purity issues that can lead to production fields being rejected. A unique nuclear genetic male sterility seed production technology, referred to as Ms44-SPT, was developed to avoid hybrid seed loss and to improve the purity and quality of hybrid maize production.

Methods: We followed 11,346 individuals recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes for up to 14 years. Baseline YKL-40 levels (measured in 9,010 individuals) were grouped into percentiles (0-33 %, 34-66 %, 67-90 %, and 91-100 %) and analyzed continuously (per 1 SD log increment), with comparisons to CRP (measured in 9,644 individuals).
Purpose: Siblings of children with cancer experience the consequences of their brother or sister's disease and treatment firsthand, often causing social and school-related difficulties. This study aimed to gather parents' and siblings' feedback on a proposal for a school-based social and educational support intervention for siblings with the goal of tailoring the program to meet the needs of siblings.
Method: Adopting a criterion sampling strategy, we conducted interviews with 20 parents and 11 siblings, aged 7-19 years, of children with cancer.
Background: Impaired fetal and accelerated postnatal growth are associated with cardiometabolic disease. Few studies investigated how recovery from severe acute malnutrition (SAM) is associated with childhood cardiometabolic risk.
Objectives: We evaluated cardiometabolic risk in children with SAM treated through community-based management, relative to controls, 5-y postrecovery.
Background: Childhood is a period marked by dynamic growth. Evidence of the association between childhood linear growth and school achievement comes mostly from cross-sectional data. We assessed associations between birth length, childhood linear growth velocities, and stunting with school achievement.
