Comparative study of conventional and process intensification by reactive distillation designs for glycerol carbonate production from glycerol and diethyl carbonate.

Glycerol carbonate (GC) can be produced from glycerol (GL), a low-value byproduct in the biodiesel industry. In this work, continuous processes of GC production via transesterification from crude GL and diethyl carbonate (DEC) were developed using Aspen Plus. Two cases were considered, and their process performances were compared.

Association between socioeconomic status and patient-reported outcome at 1 year after shoulder arthroplasty for osteoarthritis or cuff-tear arthropathy: a nationwide cohort study of 2,292 arthroplasties.

Purpose:  We aimed to evaluate the association between socioeconomic factors and patient-reported Western Ontario Osteoarthritis of the Shoulder (WOOS) index at 1 year after hemiarthroplasty, reverse, or anatomical total shoulder arthroplasty for osteoarthritis or cuff-tear arthropathy.

Methods:  Eligible patients were identified using linked national data from the Danish Shoulder Arthroplasty Registry and Statistics Denmark between April 2012 and April 2019. Univariable and multivariable linear regression was used to identify the association between socioeconomic factors and the WOOS index at 1 year following primary shoulder arthroplasty adjusted for age, sex, underlying diagnosis, implant design, and comorbidities.

Background: Hope is essential for mental health in general and for recovery following severe illness. However, the associations between posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) and hope among intensive care unit (ICU) survivors has not been investigated.

Objectives: To assess hope at 3, 6 and 12 months after ICU admission and examine possible associations between hope and selected demographic data, clinical characteristics, and 3-month PTSS-levels among ICU patients.

In the United States and the United Kingdom, where the author resides, many Emergency Departments utilize nerve blocks for fractures waiting to be seen by orthopedic surgery. As emergency nurses, be it advance practice nurse or staff nurse, it is our professional responsibility to be aware of emergencies that can result from these nerve blocks, namely local anesthetic toxicity (LAT). In the United Kingdom, there are protocols and guidelines for the treatment of this adverse event, which are shared in this article as a knowledge base for identifying and treating LAT.

Background And Aims: Fatigue is commonly observed in Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC), but its association to achieving remission is not clearly established. In this study we describe the odds for fatigue in patients with CD/UC one year after diagnosis based on different definitions of remission and identified factors associated with chronic fatigue (CF) among patients in endoscopic/radiological remission.

Methods: Patients ≥18 years with CD/UC were recruited from the IBSEN III cohort.

The Block Copolymer Database (BCDB) is a platform that allows users to search, submit, visualize, benchmark, and download experimental phase measurements and their associated characterization information for di- and multiblock copolymers. To the best of our knowledge, there is no widely accepted data model for publishing experimental and simulation data on block copolymer self-assembly. This proposed data schema with traceable information can accommodate any number of blocks and at the time of publication contains over 5400 block copolymer total melt phase measurements mined from the literature and manually curated and simulation data points of the phase diagram generated from self-consistent field theory that can rapidly be augmented.

Background: Classification systems are only useful if there is agreement among observers. The purpose of this study is to introduce a simple and clinically applicable classification system - The Copenhagen Classification System for Distal Humeral Fractures (CCDHF) and to compare the interobserver and intraobserver agreement for this classification with the Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Osteosynthesefragen/Orthopedic Trauma Association (AO/OTA), and the Sheffield classification systems. Methods: We included all patients reported to the Danish Shoulder Arthroplasty Register from January 1, 2012 to December 31, 2022 with an anatomical TSA used for osteoarthritis.

Procellariiform seabirds can accumulate high levels of plastic in their gastrointestinal tracts, which can cause physical damage and potentially provides a contamination route for trace elements. We examined plastic ingestion and trace element contamination of fledgling Manx shearwaters Puffinus puffinus that were harvested for human consumption in 2003 and 2018 on Skúvoy, Faroe Islands (North Atlantic Ocean). Overall, 88% of fledglings contained plastic in their gastrointestinal tracts, with a mean (± SD) of 7.

In a warming Arctic, circumpolar long-term monitoring programs are key to advancing ecological knowledge and informing environmental policies. Calls for better involvement of Arctic peoples in all stages of the monitoring process are widespread, although such transformation of Arctic science is still in its infancy. Seabirds stand out as ecological sentinels of environmental changes, and priority has been given to implement the Circumpolar Seabird Monitoring Plan (CSMP).
