Coexistence of ankylosing spondylitis and diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis: another report.

A middle-aged man presented with a 10-year history of intermittent low back pain. Radiological examination of the spine disclosed findings of both ankylosing spondylitis and diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH). Radiography of the hands showed the typical enthesopathy of DISH.

Isolated HLA-B27 associated Achilles tendinitis.

The case of a 37 year old man with a longstanding HLA-B27 associated bilateral Achilles tendinitis without seronegative spondyloarthropathy is reported. This case suggests that heel enthesopathy may for a long time be the only clinical manifestation of the HLA-B27 associated disease process.

The interaction of host plant phenology and microclimatic heterogeneity was examined to determine its role in the population dynamics of checkerspot butterflies, Euphydryas editha, inhabiting serpentine grassland in California's outer Coast Range.Within the 2-3 hectares inhabited by a population of E. editha (Jasper Ridge Area H), microclimatic differences resulting from topographic heterogeneity largely determine the temporal and spatial pattern of senescence of the larval host plants, Plantago erecta and Orthocarpus densiflorus.

Erosive immune complex-mediated arthritis associated with meningococcal meningitis.

A case of erosive sterile arthritis following meningococcal meningitis is described. High levels of immune complexes were detected in serum and synovial fluid. This is the first case in literature in which destruction of subchondral bone is documented.

Reproductive system and colonizing strategy of two species of Carduus (compositae).

Carduus pycnocephalus and C. tenuiflorus are two important weed species in mediterranean-type ecosystems. They were studied in their native habitat in southern France from April to December 1981.
