Phonon-based partition of (ZnSe-like) semiconductor mixed crystals on approach to their pressure-induced structural transition.

The generic 1-bond → 2-mode "percolation-type" Raman signal inherent to the short bond of common ABC semiconductor mixed crystals with zincblende (cubic) structure is exploited as a sensitive "mesoscope" to explore how various ZnSe-based systems engage their pressure-induced structural transition (to rock-salt) at the sub-macroscopic scale-with a focus on ZnCdSe. The Raman doublet, that distinguishes between the AC- and BC-like environments of the short bond, is reactive to pressure: either it closes (ZnBeSe, ZnSeS) or it opens (ZnCdSe), depending on the hardening rates of the two environments under pressure. A partition of II-VI and III-V mixed crystals is accordingly outlined.

A 5-color flow cytometric method for extended 8-part leukocyte differential.

Objectives: Microscopic leukocyte differentials display many drawbacks. Several single 5 to 8-color tubes using multiparameter flow cytometry (MFC) are able to provide extended differentials with sequential gating-based analysis strategies. We investigated a new 5-color MFC method to perform an extended 8-part differential with a simplified gating strategy.

Does nodal status influence survival? Results of a 19-year systematic lymphadenectomy experience during lung metastasectomy of colorectal cancer.

Objectives: Resection of pulmonary metastases originating from colorectal cancer is increasingly considered. While several adverse risk factors for long-term outcome are known, the selection of patients who may benefit from surgery remains unclear. In particular, few studies have addressed the impact of lymph node involvement, and signification of the hilar or mediastinal level of extent.

How to replace an extracorporeal life support without interruption of the cardiopulmonary assistance.

The extracorporeal life support (ECLS) allows a maximum of a few weeks of cardio-respiratory assistance. Using standard ECLS, the circuit must be replaced after a few days or sometimes more frequently, in case of dysfunction. Classically, the replacement needs the interruption of the support inducing a temporarily hemodynamic instability.

Paracorporeal pulsatile biventricular assist device versus extracorporal membrane oxygenation-extracorporal life support in adult fulminant myocarditis.

Objective: Biventricular assist device support with a paracorporeal pulsatile device is known to be an efficient bridge to recovery for patients with fulminant myocarditis-related cardiogenic shock. Whether these patients can be as efficiently supported with femorofemoral extracorporeal membrane oxygenation remains unclear.

Methods: From 2001 to 2006, 11 patients were referred to our cardiac surgery department for fulminant myocarditis-related cardiogenic shock.

Management of brachial artery aneurisms in infants.

Brachial artery aneurisms in children under 1 year of age are very rare. The main risk is distal ischaemic complication. We report four infants suffering from brachial artery aneurism of unknown origin.

Intra-esophageal rupture of a bronchogenic cyst.

Bronchogenic cysts usually are an asymptomatic disease and present as an incidental finding in the chest X-rays. They require a complete and early surgical excision to prevent complications and recurrences. We report a rare case of a voluminous symptomatic para-esophageal bronchogenic cyst complicated by an esophageal fistula.

Endovascular treatment of an acute subdiaphragmatic aortic rupture.

We report the case of a 23-year-old man presenting an acute rupture of the subdiaphragmatic aorta in front of a T12 vertebral fracture after a road accident. Because of the location of this lesion, the operative risk and a cardiac instability, we opted for an endovascular treatment with a new and original approach in covering a small part of the aorta using commercial devices. We also describe the probable mechanism of this uncommon aortic rupture.
