Background: Dietitians ensure that patients receive tailored medical nutrition therapy to integrate with pharmacotherapy safely. Dietitians require a pharmacological understanding to prevent detrimental food-drug interactions (FDIs). The study investigated dietitians' knowledge of FDIs and their information sourcing.

Planning for Next Time: The Challenges Faced by a Veterinary Teaching Hospital During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

The COVID-19 pandemic challenged critical services to maintain operations while facing a highly transmissible human pathogen. As public health officials worked to manage the crisis, initial guidelines focused on the continuation of services in the human health care setting. However, through state-mandated stay-at-home orders, the Michigan State University veterinary teaching hospital remained open to provide emergency services to both large and small animal patients.

Management of patients with diffusion-weighted imaging-negative acute ischemic stroke: Retrospective analysis of 47 consecutive patients.

Background: Few studies with a limited number of patients focused on the outcomes of patients with diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI)-negative acute ischemic stroke (AIS) after intravenous thrombolysis (IVT) and/or endovascular treatment (EVT).

Methods: This retrospective observational, single-center study included all consecutive patients admitted for AIS involving the anterior circulation and treated with IVT and/or EVT between January 1, 2015 and December 31, 2023. The collected data were used to identify the characteristics of patients with negative DWI and to compare outcomes in patients with negative and positive DWI.

Pediatric and adolescent HIV viral load coverage and suppression rates in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic in 12 PEPFAR-supported sub-Saharan African countries in 2019 and 2020.

The early period of the COVID-19 pandemic limited access to HIV services for children and adolescents living with HIV (C/ALHIV). To determine progress in providing care and treatment services, we describe viral load coverage (VLC) and suppression (VLS) (<1000 copies/ mL) rates during the COVID-19 pandemic in 12 United States President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR)-supported countries. Data for children (0-9 years) and adolescents (10-19 years) on VLC and VLS were analyzed for 12 sub-Saharan African (SSA) countries between 2019 (pre-COVID-19) and 2020 (during COVID-19).

Establishing African genomics and bioinformatics programs through annual regional workshops.

The African BioGenome Project (AfricaBP) Open Institute for Genomics and Bioinformatics aims to overcome barriers to capacity building through its distributed African regional workshops and prioritizes the exchange of grassroots knowledge and innovation in biodiversity genomics and bioinformatics. In 2023, we implemented 28 workshops on biodiversity genomics and bioinformatics, covering 11 African countries across the 5 African geographical regions. These regional workshops trained 408 African scientists in hands-on molecular biology, genomics and bioinformatics techniques as well as the ethical, legal and social issues associated with acquiring genetic resources.

Early- to mid-gestational testosterone excess leads to adverse cardiac outcomes in postpartum sheep.

Cardiovascular dysfunctions complicate 10-20% of pregnancies, increasing the risk for postpartum mortality. Various gestational insults, including preeclampsia are reported to be associated with adverse maternal cardiovascular outcomes. One such insult, gestational hyperandrogenism increases the risk for preeclampsia and other gestational morbidities but its impact on postpartum maternal health is not well known.

Spatial genome organization within the nucleus influences major biological processes and is impacted by the configuration of linear chromosomes. Here, we applied 3D spatial statistics and modeling on high-resolution telomere and centromere 3D-structured illumination microscopy images in cancer cells. We found a multi-scale organization of telomeres that dynamically evolved from a mixed clustered-and-regular distribution in early G1 to a purely regular distribution as cells progressed through the cell cycle.

Paraspinal muscle oxygenation and mechanical efficiency are reduced in individuals with chronic low back pain.

This study aimed to compare the systemic and local metabolic responses during a 5-min trunk extension exercise in individuals with chronic low back pain (CLBP) and in healthy individuals. Thirteen active participants with CLBP paired with 13 healthy participants performed a standardised 5-min trunk extension exercise on an isokinetic dynamometer set in continuous passive motion mode. During exercise, we used near-infrared spectroscopy to measure tissue oxygenation (TOI) and total haemoglobin-myoglobin (THb).

Multivariable risk model for postpartum re-presentation with hypertension: development phase.

Objectives: Postpartum hypertension is one of the leading causes of re-presentation to hospital postpartum and is associated with adverse long-term cardiovascular risk. Postpartum blood pressure monitoring and management interventions have been shown to reduce hospital re-presentation, complications and long-term blood pressure control. Identifying patients at risk can be difficult as 40%-50% present with de novo postpartum hypertension.

Control of complex parasites via vaccination remains challenging, with the current combination of vaccines and small drugs remaining the choice for an integrated control strategy. Studies conducted to date, are providing evidence that multicomponent vaccines will be needed for the development of protective vaccines against endo- and ectoparasites, though multicomponent vaccines require an in-depth understanding of parasite biology which remains insufficient for ticks. With the rapid development and spread of acaricide resistance in ticks, new targets for acaricide development also remains to be identified, along with novel targets that can be exploited for the design of lead compounds.

Third harmonic imaging contrast from tubular structures in the presence of index discontinuity.

Accurate interpretation of third harmonic generation (THG) microscopy images in terms of sample optical properties and microstructure is generally hampered by the presence of excitation field distortions resulting from sample heterogeneity. Numerical methods that account for these artifacts need to be established. In this work, we experimentally and numerically analyze the THG contrast obtained from stretched hollow glass pipettes embedded in different liquids.

Evaluation of Slowfade Diamond as a buffer for STORM microscopy.

We study the potential of the commercial mounting medium Slowfade diamond as a buffer for STORM microscopy. We show that although it does not work with the popular far-red dyes typically used for STORM imaging, such as Alexa Fluor 647, it performs really well with a wide variety of green-excited dyes such as Alexa Fluor 532, Alexa Fluor 555 or CF 568. Moreover, imaging can be performed several months after the samples are mounted in this environment and kept in the fridge, providing a convenient way to preserve samples for STORM imaging, as well as to keep calibration samples, for example for metrology or teaching in particular in imaging facilities.

Subjective assessment of a lumbar exoskeleton's impact on lower back pain in a real work situation.

This study evaluated the impact of a lumbar exoskeleton on low back pain perception, in a real work situation. For three weeks, 30 subjects with and without specific low back pain assessed daily their lumbar pain on their work activities at the beginning and end of the workday by a visual analogue scale. The first and the third week, participants worked normally.

Is off-label thrombolysis safe and effective in a real-life primary stroke center? A retrospective analysis of data from a 5-year prospective database.

Background: Intravenous thrombolysis (IVT) use for acute ischemic stroke (AIS) varies among countries, partly due to guidelines and product labeling changes. The study aim was to identify the characteristics of patients with AIS treated with off-label IVT and to determine its safety when performed in a primary stroke center (PSC).

Methods: This observational, single-center study included all consecutive patients admitted to Perpignan PSC for AIS and treated with IVT and patients transferred for EVT, between January 1, 2015 and December 31, 2019.

Deep-sea ecosystems play a key role in the cycling and vertical transfer of matter and energy in oceans. Although the contamination of deep-sea demersal and benthic organisms by persistent organic pollutants has been proven, deep pelagic species have been far less studied. To fill these gaps, we studied the occurrence of a large variety of hydrophobic organic contaminants including polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), legacy and alternative brominated flame retardants (BFRs) and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in crustaceans and fish species collected in the Bay of Biscay, northeast Atlantic.

BrdU Incorporation and Labeling of Nascent DNA to Investigate Archaeal Replication Using Super-Resolution Imaging.

The labeling and specific detection of nascent DNA by the incorporation of thymidine analogs provide crucial information about DNA replication dynamics without requiring the intracellular expression of fluorescent proteins. After cell fixation and permeabilization, specific detection of thymidine analogs by antibodies can be performed using super-resolution imaging techniques. Here we describe a protocol to label nascent DNA using 5'-bromo-2'-deoxyuridine (BrdU) in Haloferax volcanii cells and generate super-resolved images of neo-synthesized DNA foci either by 3D Structured illumination microscopy (3D-SIM) or Stochastic Optical Reconstruction Microscopy (STORM).

Different clinical outcomes between cerebral amyloid angiopathy-related inflammation and non-inflammatory form.

Objective: Cerebral amyloid angiopathy-related inflammation (CAA-ri) is a rare manifestation related to CAA, thought to be more severe. We aimed to compare the clinical and radiological outcomes of CAA-ri and non-inflammatory CAA.
