Mitochondrial Dysfunction as a Biomarker of Illness State in Bipolar Disorder: A Critical Review.

Mitochondria are organelles involved in different cellular functions, especially energy production. A relationship between mitochondrial dysfunction and mood disorders, especially bipolar disorder (BD), has been reported in the scientific literature, which suggests altered energy production and higher levels of oxidative stress compared to healthy controls. Specifically, in BD, the hypothesis of a biphasic pattern of energy availability has been postulated according to mood states.

Optimization of fs-laser-induced voxels in nonlinear materials via over-correction of spherical aberration.

In this Letter, over-correction of spherical aberration is used to counteract nonlinear effects such as Kerr self-focusing and plasma effects, resulting in more spherical and small-sized femtosecond laser-inscribed voxels within nonlinear materials. By strategically redirecting marginal focusing rays toward the beginning of the laser modification zone, the induced plasma prevents any rays from causing a structural modification beyond this zone, irrespective of any focus elongation caused by nonlinear effects. The method has been effectively validated across a range of materials, including ZnS, ZnSe, BIG, GeS, and SiO.

Catatonia as a debut of systemic lupus erythematosus: a case report on a diagnostic challenge.

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disorder characterized by a wide variety of symptoms, including frequent neurological and psychiatric symptomatology. Psychiatric symptoms encountered in SLE are frequent, between 37 and 95% of SLE patients present them, can appear at any point in the course of the disease and may include almost any type of disorder. We present the case of a 32-year-old woman who presented an SLE debut with catatonic symptoms without previous psychiatric history, representing a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge given that the diagnosis was initially wrongly filtered out and required up to three hospital admissions in a row to reach a proper diagnosis and treatment.

New Insights Into Infections' Risk of Adolescents and Young Adults Treated for Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia.

Background: This study aims to compare the infections' risk between adolescents and young adults (AYAs), treated for acute lymphoblastic leukemia, and pediatric population. We also focused on their bacterial and fungal infection specificities.

Methods: This case-control study investigated the occurrence of bacterial bloodstream infection (BSI) and proven and probable invasive fungal infection (IFI) in AYAs (15-25 years old) and children (1-14 years old) treated for acute lymphoblastic leukemia between January 2013 and December 2020 in 2 French tertiary pediatric and 2 referral adult hematological centers, independent of their treatment protocol.

Introduction: Bipolar disorder (BD) is a chronic and recurrent illness characterized by manic, mixed or depressive episodes, alternated with periods of euthymia. Several prognostic factors are associated with higher rates of relapse, which is crucial for the identification of high-risk individuals. This study aimed at systematically reviewing the existing literature regarding the impact of sociodemographic, clinical and environmental factors, in clinical relapses, recurrences and hospitalizations due to mood episodes in BD.

Background: Aerobic capacity has shown to predict physical and mental health-related quality of life in bipolar disorder (BD). However, the correlation between exercise respiratory capacity and mitochondrial function remains understudied. We aimed to assess longitudinally intra-individual differences in these factors during mood episodes and remission in BD.

A multi-year, multi-site study of the prevalence of fetal alcohol syndrome in South Africa.

Background: South Africa has the highest reported prevalence of fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) globally. The most recent study reported a weighted, estimated FASD prevalence of 310 per 1000 in a community in the Western Cape Province. Because there is as yet no reliable estimate of the national burden of FASD in South Africa, further epidemiological studies are needed in diverse settings.

Background: To investigate the educational outcomes of siblings of childhood leukemia survivors, explore determinants of school difficulties, and compare the rates of repeating grades between siblings and the general population.

Methods: A cross-sectional study of childhood leukemia survivors' siblings recruited through the Leucémies de l'Enfant et de l'Adolescent cohort, a French long-term follow-up program, was conducted, and education-related data were obtained via self-report questionnaires. Adjusted logistic regression models were used to identify variables associated with school difficulties and time since diagnosis.

Testing the Effectiveness of the "Smelly" Elephant Repellent in Controlled Experiments in Semi-Captive Asian and African Savanna Elephants.

Crop-raiding by elephants is one of the most prevalent forms of human-elephant conflict and is increasing with the spread of agriculture into wildlife range areas. As the magnitude of conflicts between people and elephants increases across Africa and Asia, mitigating and reducing the impacts of elephant crop-raiding has become a major focus of conservation intervention. In this study, we tested the responses of semi-captive elephants to the "smelly" elephant repellent, a novel olfactory crop-raiding mitigation method.

Neuropsychiatric symptoms in a patient under cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator modulators treatment: a case report.

In recent times, some research has focused on the study of potential treatments for cystic fibrosis (CF), such as cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) modulators. These treatments have been reported to produce neuropsychiatric symptoms in a few patients, even though there is still no clear correlation nor underlying mechanism proposed. We present the case of a 23-year-old woman with CF and no previous psychiatric history who was admitted to our inpatient psychiatric unit presenting a wide range of neuropsychiatric symptoms, such as disorganized speech, bizarre poses or persecutory delusional ideation, after going under CFTR modulators treatment.

Visual Function and Neuropsychological Profiling of Idiopathic Infantile Nystagmus.

Though considered a benign condition, idiopathic infantile nystagmus (IIN) may be associated with decreased visual acuity and oculo-motor abnormalities, resulting in developmental delays and poor academic performance. Nevertheless, the specific visual function profile of IIN and its possible impact on neuropsychological development have been poorly investigated. To fill this gap, we retrospectively collected the clinical data of 60 children presenting with IIN over a 10-year period (43 male; mean age of 7 years, range of 2 months-17 years, 9 months).

Manic episode in a patient with pancreatic adenocarcinoma: a case report.

Psychiatric comorbidity is common in cancer patients, emphasizing the need for comprehensive care. While depressive symptoms in pancreatic cancer have been studied, there is limited attention given to manic symptoms. This case report aims to contribute to the knowledge of pancreatic cancer psychiatric comorbidities by describing a case of a patient with stage IV pancreatic cancer who presented a sudden onset manic episode.

Catatonic postpartum paternal depression as a first debut of a bipolar disorder: a case report.

Paternal postpartum depression (PD) is considered an affective disorder that affects fathers during the months following childbirth. Interestingly, it has been observed that during these months the chances of a male parent suffering from depression are double that for a non-parent male counterpart. We present the case of a 34-year-old man with no relevant medical history in who, overlapping her daughter's birth, several depressive symptoms emerged, such as fatigue, lack of concentration, sleeping disturbances and abandonment of care of the newborn.

Running against the clock: a qualitative study of internal medicine residents' work experience.

Aim Of The Study: While hospitals are adopting strategies designed to increase the overall efficiency of the healthcare system, physicians are facing expanding requirements. Such changes in work environment add new psychosocial and physical stressors. Building on a previous quantitative time-motion study, we conducted a qualitative study to better understand the work experience of internal medicine residents.

Visual Function and Neuropsychological Profile in Children with Cerebral Visual Impairment.

Cerebral Visual Impairment (CVI) has become the leading cause of children’s visual impairment in developed countries. Since CVI may negatively affect neuropsychomotor development, an early diagnosis and characterization become fundamental to define effective habilitation approaches. To date, there is a lack of standardized diagnostic methods to assess CVI in children, and the role of visual functions in children’s neuropsychological profiles has been poorly investigated.

Abrikossoff Tumor Clinically Mimicking Carcinoma in Accessory Axillary Breast Tissue.

Abrikossoff tumors are rare benign soft-tissue lesions also known as granular cell tumors (GCT). The histogenesis of these tumors was initially considered to be myogenic but recent studies have revealed a neuroectodermal origin. GCTs of the breast may mimic breast carcinoma based on the triad of radiological, clinical, and pathological features.

Breast cancer (BC) is one of the leading causes of death among women globally. In the Caribbean, there is a higher mortality rate compared with North American and European countries which have higher incidence rates. We conducted a literature review to examine the BC dynamic in the Caribbean and determine the areas where further investigations are needed.

Executive Function After Prenatal Alcohol Exposure in Children in a South African Population: Cross-sectional Study.

Background: Alcohol is a teratogen; its consumption during pregnancy can lead to negative birth outcomes, collectively referred to as fetal alcohol spectrum disorders. Neurodevelopmental delays in higher-order cognitive functions that affect development of executive functions are a common feature. Studies on executive function in children have focused on children diagnosed with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder, and there is a lack of information on the impact on children not diagnosed with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder but who had been exposed to alcohol.
