In this work, we present the development and biofunctionalization of a fiber-optic ball-resonator biosensor for the real-time detection of vaccinia poxvirus. We fabricated several ball-tip resonators, functionalized through a silanization process to immobilize two bioreceptors: the monoclonal anti-L1R antibody targeting the L1R protein, and the polyclonal rabbit serum antibodies targeting the whole vaccinia virus (VV) pathogen. Corsican Helichrysum italicum essential oil (HIEO) is characterized by high concentrations of neryl acetate, and we previously demonstrated that Corsican HIEO increases the expression of genes that are part of the differentiation complex (involucrin, small proline rich proteins, late cornified envelope, S100 protein family). The biological activities of HIEO and neryl acetate (NA) were compared to identify how NA contributes to HIEO activity on human skin. NA, as a part component of HIEO, was tested on skin explant models for 24 hours and 5 days in comparison with HIEO.

Background: The advancement of hybrid sequencing technologies is increasingly expanding genome assemblies that are often annotated using hybrid sequencing transcriptomics, leading to improved genome characterization and the identification of novel genes and isoforms in a wide variety of organisms.

Results: We developed an easy-to-use genome-guided transcriptome annotation pipeline that uses assembled transcripts from hybrid sequencing data as input and distinguishes between coding and long non-coding RNAs by integration of several bioinformatic approaches, including gene reconciliation with previous annotations in GTF format. We demonstrated the efficiency of this approach by correctly assembling and annotating all exons from the chicken SCO-spondin gene (containing more than 105 exons), including the identification of missing genes in the chicken reference annotations by homology assignments.

Background: Hepatic encephalopathy is characterized by psychiatric and neurological abnormalities, including epileptic seizure and non-convulsive and convulsive status epilepticus. Conventional brain magnetic resonance imaging is useful in supporting diagnosis since it can reveal specific radiological findings. HER2-positive breast cancers may lose HER2 expression in recurrences and metastases. In this work, we studied cell lines derived from two transgenic mammary tumors driven by human HER2 that showed different dynamics of HER2 status. MamBo89HER2 cell line displayed high and stable HER2 expression, which was maintained upon in vivo passages, whereas MamBo43HER2 cell line gave rise to HER2-negative tumors from which MamBo38HER2 cell line was derived.

The expression of BCL6 in B-cell lymphoma can be deregulated by chromosomal translocations, somatic mutations in the promoter regulatory regions, or reduced proteasome-mediated degradation. FBXO11 was recently identified as a ubiquitin ligase that is involved in the degradation of BCL6, and it is frequently inactivated in lymphoma or other tumors. Here, we show that FBXO11 mutations are found in 23% of patients with Burkitt lymphoma (BL).

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma is an aggressive tumor characterized by the presence of an abundant stromal compartment contributing significantly to the malignant phenotype. Pancreatic stellate cells are peculiar fibroblasts present in the stroma and represent the predominant source of extracellular matrix proteins, pro-inflammatory cytokines, and growth factors, including hepatocyte growth factor (HGF). Exploiting a co-culture system of human pancreatic stellate cells and cancer cells, we demonstrated that fibroblast activation was reduced upon HGF/MET axis inhibition.
