Introduction: Many First Nations children live in communities that face diverse social and health challenges compared with their non-Aboriginal peers, including some of the most socio-economically challenging situations in Canada. These differences can be seen in broad indicators of the social determinants of health. Studies of mortality in Aboriginal populations across Canada are often restricted by the lack of Aboriginal identifiers on national death records.

The impact of escitalopram on IL-2-induced neuroendocrine, immune, and behavioral changes in patients with malignant melanoma: preliminary findings.

Interleukin (IL)-2, a T-cell cytokine used to treat malignant melanoma, can induce profound depression. To determine whether pretreatment with the antidepressant escitalopram could reduce IL-2-induced neuroendocrine, immune, and neurobehavioral changes, 20 patients with Stage IV melanoma were randomized to either placebo or the serotonin reuptake inhibitor, escitalopram (ESC) 10-20 mg/day, 2 weeks before, and during IL-2 treatment (720 000 units/kg Q8 h × 5 days (1 cycle) every 3 weeks × 4 cycles). Generalized estimation equations were used to examine HPA axis activity (plasma ACTH and cortisol), immune activation (plasma IL-6), and depressive symptoms (Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS) score).

The contribution of neighbourhood material and social deprivation to survival: a 22-year follow-up of more than 500,000 Canadians.

Background: We examined the incremental influence on survival of neighbourhood material and social deprivation while accounting for individual level socioeconomic status in a large population-based cohort of Canadians.

Methods: More than 500,000 adults were followed for 22 years between 1982 and 2004. Tax records provided information on sex, income, marital status and postal code while a linkage was used to determine vital status.

Phylogeny and phylogeography of Mantophryne (Anura: Microhylidae) reveals cryptic diversity in New Guinea.

New Guinea is one of five high biodiversity wilderness areas, and frog diversity is exceptionally large, with more than 400 species described to date. The microhylid frog genus Mantophryne is endemic to New Guinea and consists of four species, three of which have narrow geographic distributions and a fourth, M. lateralis, with a broad range that spans the eastern half of the island.

Targeting metabolism to induce cell death in cancer cells and cancer stem cells.

Abnormal metabolism and the evasion of apoptosis are considered hallmarks of cancers. Accumulating evidence shows that cancer stem cells are key drivers of tumor formation, progression, and recurrence. A successful therapy must therefore eliminate these cells known to be highly resistant to apoptosis.

Differentiation-related response to DNA breaks in human mesenchymal stem cells.

We have recently shown that the in vitro differentiation of human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) was accompanied by an increased sensitivity toward apoptosis; however, the mechanism responsible for this shift is not known. Here, we show that the repair of DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs) was more rapid in undifferentiated hMSCs than in differentiated osteoblasts by quantification of the disappearance of γ-H2AX foci in the nuclei after γ-irradiation-induced DNA damage. In addition, there was a marked and prolonged increase in the level of nuclear Ku70 and an increased phosphorylation of DNA-PKcs.

Evaluating potential spatial access to trauma center care by severely injured patients.

Injuries are a major public health problem around the world. Previous research has suggested that providing prompt access to specialized trauma center care may greatly improve the health outcomes of trauma patients. In this paper, a geographic information system (GIS) method is used to examine potential spatial access to trauma centers by individuals who were either hospitalized or died as a result of a major trauma.

Oncogenic but non-essential role of N-myc downstream regulated gene 1 in the progression of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma.

N-myc downstream regulated gene 1 (NDRG1/Cap43/Drg-1) has previously been shown to be dysregulated in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). In this study, we investigated the role of NDRG1 in the neoplastic progression of ESCC using ectopic gain-of-function and loss-of-function approaches. Stable transfectants of the KYSE30 ESCC cell line with altered NDRG1 levels were generated by lentiviral transduction.

Non-ketotic hyperglycinaemia: case report and review of medical literature.

Rare inheritable conditions may present without warning in the neonatal period and thus lead curious staff to institute expansive clinical investigations. Non-ketotic hyperglycaemia (NKH) in a normal fully grown male infant following an essentially eventful pregnancy associated with unrelated condition provoked much clinical curiosity. NKH should therefore be included as a differential diagnosis in an unwell neonate presenting with hiccoughs, seizures, myotonic jerks, and hypotonia as our very unique case clearly demonstrated.

Unintentional injury hospitalizations among children and youth in areas with a high percentage of Aboriginal identity residents: 2001/2002 to 2005/2006.

Background: Because administrative data typically do not contain Aboriginal identifiers, national unintentional injury hospitalization rates among Aboriginal children have not been reported. This study examines rates of unintentional injury hospitalization for children in areas with a high-percentage Aboriginal identity population.

Data And Methods: Data are from the Hospital Morbidity Database (2001/2002 to 2005/2006).

Comparison of spheroids formed by rat glioma stem cells and neural stem cells reveals differences in glucose metabolism and promising therapeutic applications.

Cancer stem cells (CSCs) are thought to be partially responsible for cancer resistance to current therapies and tumor recurrence. Dichloroacetate (DCA), a compound capable of shifting metabolism from glycolysis to glucose oxidation, via an inhibition of pyruvate dehydrogenase kinase was used. We show that DCA is able to shift the pyruvate metabolism in rat glioma CSCs but has no effect in rat neural stem cells.

Identification and characterization of nucleolin as a COUP-TFII coactivator of retinoic acid receptor β transcription in breast cancer cells.

Introduction: The orphan nuclear receptor COUP-TFII plays an undefined role in breast cancer. Previously we reported lower COUP-TFII expression in tamoxifen/endocrine-resistant versus sensitive breast cancer cell lines. The identification of COUP-TFII-interacting proteins will help to elucidate its mechanism of action as a transcriptional regulator in breast cancer.

Plasma 1,8-cineole correlates with cognitive performance following exposure to rosemary essential oil aroma.

Objective: The mode of influence of the aromas of plant essential oils on human behaviour is largely unclear. This study was designed to assess the potential pharmacological relationships between absorbed 1,8-cineole following exposure to rosemary aroma, cognitive performance and mood.

Methods: Twenty healthy volunteers performed serial subtraction and visual information processing tasks in a cubicle diffused with the aroma of rosemary.

Alcohol use patterns and trajectories of health-related quality of life in middle-aged and older adults: a 14-year population-based study.

Objective: A 14-year multiwave panel design was used to examine relationships between longitudinal alcohol-consumption patterns, especially persistent moderate use, and change in health-related quality of life among middle-aged and older adults.

Method: A nationally representative sample of 5,404 community-dwelling Canadians ages 50 and older at baseline (1994/1995) was obtained from the longitudinal National Population Health Survey. Alcohol-consumption patterns were developed based on the quantity and frequency of use in the 12 months before the interview.

Geozones: an area-based method for analysis of health outcomes.

Background: Administrative datasets often lack information about individual characteristics such as Aboriginal identity and income. However, these datasets frequently contain individual-level geographic information (such as postal codes). This paper explains the methodology for creating Geozones, which are area-based thresholds of population characteristics derived from census data, which can be used in the analysis of social or economic differences in health and health service utilization.

Comparison of hydroxyapatite-coated and uncoated pins for transfixation casting in horses.

Objective: To determine the extent to which a hydroxyapatite coating promotes pin stability in the third metacarpal bone during transfixation casting in horses.

Animals: 14 adult horses.

Procedures: 7 horses each were assigned to either an uncoated or hydroxyapatite-coated pin group.

Basal autophagy decreased during the differentiation of human adult mesenchymal stem cells.

Autophagy plays an important role in homeostasis, development, and disease, functioning both as a survival and cell death pathway. However, despite its importance in cell physiology, there is little information about the role of autophagy in stem cells and, in particular, on its implication in their survival and/or cell death. We describe here that in vitro, human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) exhibited a high level of constitutive autophagy.

Very small size proteoliposomes derived from Neisseria meningitidis: an effective adjuvant for antigen-specific cytotoxic T lymphocyte response stimulation under leukopenic conditions.

Leukopenia is a severe condition resulting from both pathological processes and some treatments, like chemotherapy in cancer patients. However, the activation of the patient immune system is required for the success of immunotherapeutic strategies, as cancer vaccines. In this regard, leukopenia constitutes a major hurdle to overcome, mainly due to the impairment of cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL) responses.

Assessing the influence of the built environment on physical activity for utility and recreation in suburban metro Vancouver.

Background: Physical inactivity and associated co-morbidities such as obesity and cardiovascular disease are estimated to have large societal costs. There is increasing interest in examining the role of the built environment in shaping patterns of physical activity. However, few studies have: (1) simultaneously examined physical activity for leisure and utility; (2) selected study areas with a range of built environment characteristics; and (3) assessed the built environment using high-resolution land use data.

Carbohydrate counting in diabetes.

Carbohydrate counting is an effective tool to aid the management of blood glucose control in type 1 diabetes. All those with this condition should be offered the opportunity to learn about carbohydrate counting at diagnosis and have access to structured education programmes such as Dose Adjustment for Normal Eating (DAFNE).

Implementing a transition pathway in diabetes: a qualitative study of the experiences and suggestions of young people with diabetes.

Background: The prevalence of Type 1 diabetes is increasing with more children and adolescents being diagnosed with this chronic condition. There has been an increasing focus in recent years on the transition through adolescence and supporting young people who have chronic health conditions, with the recognition that young people are at risk of dropping out of healthcare services following transfer from paediatric to adult services. To date, there have been limited evaluations of transition models.

Behavioural resistance against a protozoan parasite in the monarch butterfly.

1. As parasites can dramatically reduce the fitness of their hosts, there should be strong selection for hosts to evolve and maintain defence mechanisms against their parasites. One way in which hosts may protect themselves against parasitism is through altered behaviours, but such defences have been much less studied than other forms of parasite resistance.

Virulence of pathogenic Coxiella burnetii strains after growth in the absence of host cells.

Coxiella burnetii is a gram-negative bacterium that causes the zoonotic disease Q fever. Traditionally considered an obligate intracellular agent, the requirement to be grown in tissue culture cells, embryonated eggs, or animal hosts has made it difficult to isolate strains and perform genetic studies on C. burnetii.
