Introduction: Individuals with intellectual disabilities (ID) often suffer from hearing loss, in most cases undiagnosed or inappropriately treated. The implementation of a programme of systematic hearing screening, diagnostics, therapy initiation or allocation and long-term monitoring within the living environments of individuals with ID (nurseries, schools, workshops, homes), therefore, seems beneficial.

Methods And Analysis: The study aims to assess the effectiveness and costs of a low-threshold screening programme for individuals with ID.

Angiogenesis plays an important role during tumor growth and metastasis. We could previously show that Type I interferon (IFN)-deficient tumor-associated neutrophils (TANs) show strong pro-angiogenic activity, and stimulate tumor angiogenesis and growth. However, the exact mechanism responsible for their pro-angiogenic shift is not clear.

Purpose: Over the last years, robot-assisted surgery gained in importance in head and neck surgery. In our study, we used a new robotic endoscope guiding system in patients undergoing endoscopic balanced orbital decompression. The aim of the study is to evaluate the feasibility and benefit of a robotic arm in endoscopic orbital surgery.

Myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSC) are a heterogeneous group of pathologically expanded myeloid cells with immunosuppressive activity. In human disease, three major MDSC subpopulations can be defined as monocytic (M-MDSC), granulocytic [polymorphonuclear-MDSC (PMN-MDSC)], and early stage (e-MDSC), which lacks myeloid lineage markers of the former two subsets. The purpose of this study was to determine and compare the immunosuppressive capacity and clinical relevance of each of these subsets in patients with solid cancer.

Elective neck dissection of the N0-neck is routinely performed during salvage laryngectomy (SLE) for recurrent cancer of the larynx or hypopharynx. The therapeutic benefit of additional neck dissection must be weighed against the risk of increased morbidity. In this retrospective analysis, we assessed oncologic parameters of patients who underwent SLE with concurrent bilateral neck dissection for recurrent laryngeal or hypopharyngeal cancer.

Background: Patients suffering from squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx (LSCC) with lymphatic metastasis have a relatively poor prognosis and often require radical therapeutic management. The mechanisms which drive metastasis to the lymph nodes are largely unknown but may be promoted by a pro-angiogenic tumor microenvironment. In this study, we examined whether the number of microvessels and the expression level of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in the primary tumor are correlated with the degree of lymph node metastasis (N-stage), tumor staging (T) and survival time in LSCC patients.

In solid tumors the biology and clinical course are strongly influenced by the interaction of tumor cells and infiltrating stromal host cells. The aim of this study was to assess the relative importance of stromal vs. tumoral inflammation for metastasis and survival in patients with laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC).
