Background: In Guatemala, Indigenous women have a maternal mortality ratio over twice that of non-Indigenous women. Long-standing marginalization of Indigenous groups and three decades of civil war have resulted in persistent linguistic, economic, cultural, and physical barriers to maternity care. Curamericas/Guatemala facilitated the development of three community-built, -owned, and -operated birthing centers, Casas Maternas Rurales (referred to here as Community Birthing Centers), where auxiliary nurses provided physically accessible and culturally acceptable clinical care.

Background: The Curamericas/Guatemala Maternal and Child Health Project, 2011-2015, included implementation research designed to assess the effectiveness of an approach referred to as CBIO+ , composed of: (1) the Census-Based, Impact-Oriented (CBIO) Approach, (2) the Care Group Approach, and (3) the Community Birthing Center Approach. This is the second paper in a supplement of 10 articles describing the implementation research and its findings. Paper 1 describes CBIO+ , the Project Area, and how the Project was implemented.

Smoke-Free Policy Adoption in Horizon City and El Paso Community College: A Strategic Campaign Approach That Turns a "No" Into a "Yes".

Coalitions in Horizon City in El Paso County, Texas and the El Paso Community College (EPCC) had previously attempted to pass smoke-free policies in 2008 and 2016, respectively; however, both policies failed to pass at those times. The coalitions refocused their activities and were successful in passing policies in EPCC in 2020 and in Horizon City in 2021. We employed a participatory case study method to understand what factors changed between the first and second attempts at smoke-free policy adoption in Horizon City and EPCC.

The role of integrated community case management projects in strengthening health systems: case study analysis in Ethiopia, Malawi and Mozambique.

Integrated community case management (iCCM) has now been implemented at scale globally. Literature to-date has focused primarily on the effectiveness of iCCM and the systems conditions required to sustain iCCM. In this study, we sought to explore opportunities taken and lost for strengthening health systems through successive iCCM programmes.

Health systems effects of successive emergency health and nutrition projects: an embedded retrospective case study analysis in Sudan and Pakistan.

Despite increasing attention to the concept of a humanitarian-development nexus in recent years, limited research is available to improve health systems strengthening practice within humanitarian programmes. We used an exploratory, systematic, embedded, multiple case study design to discern systems effects of successive Save the Children chronic emergency health and nutrition projects implemented in Sudan and Pakistan between 2011 and 2018. We used textual analysis to code 63 documents focused on eight themes using NVivo 11.

Youth Participatory Approaches and Health Equity: Conceptualization and Integrative Review.

There is an array of youth participatory approaches relevant to health equity efforts in community psychology, adolescent health, youth development, and education. While they share some commonalities, they also reflect important distinctions regarding key processes and intended level of impact. Here, we consider the following: (a) youth-led participatory action research (YPAR), (b) youth organizing (YO), (c) youth-led planning, (d) human-centered design, (e) participatory arts, and (f) youth advisory boards.

Influence of genetic factors in elbow tendon pathology: a case-control study.

Elbow tendinopathy is a common pathology of the upper extremity that impacts both athletes and workers. Some research has examined the genetic component as a risk factor for tendinopathy, mainly in the lower limbs. A case-control study was designed to test for a relationship between certain collagen gene single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and elbow tendon pathology.

Targeting Unique Epitopes on Highly Similar Proteins GDF-11 and GDF-8 with Modified DNA Aptamers.

The mature forms of the TGF-β family members GDF-11 and GDF-8 are highly similar 25 kDa homodimers with 90% amino acid sequence identity and 99% similarity. Cross-reactivity of GDF-11 and GDF-8 binding reagents is common, making it difficult to attribute distinct roles of these two proteins in biology. We report the selection of GDF-11 and GDF-8 specific SOMAmer (Slow Off-rate Modified Aptamer) reagents aided by a combination of positive selection for one protein coupled with counter-selection against the other.

Prevalence and risk factors of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis in Cubal, Angola: a prospective cohort study.

Background: Although the Republic of Angola is one of the 14 countries figuring in the three high tuberculosis (TB) burden country lists, the true multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB) situation is unknown.

Material And Methods: Patients aged 16 years with a diagnosis of pulmonary TB were prospectively enrolled from June 2014 to July 2015. Sputum samples were collected for culture and drug susceptibility testing in all patients, and for Xpert MTB/RIF testing in all previously treated patients and in new patients whose sputum remained smear-positive after 2 months of treatment.

Quantitative Determination of Spring Water Quality Parameters via Electronic Tongue.

The use of a voltammetric electronic tongue for the quantitative analysis of quality parameters in spring water is proposed here. The electronic voltammetric tongue consisted of a set of four noble electrodes (iridium, rhodium, platinum, and gold) housed inside a stainless steel cylinder. These noble metals have a high durability and are not demanding for maintenance, features required for the development of future automated equipment.

Microbial and size characterization of airborne particulate matter collected on sticky tapes along US-Mexico border.

Incorporation of Slow Off-Rate Modified Aptamers Reagents in Single Molecule Array Assays for Cytokine Detection with Ultrahigh Sensitivity.

Slow off-rate modified aptamers (SOMAmers) are attractive protein recognition reagents due to their high binding affinities, stable chemical structures, easy production, and established selection process. Here, biotinylated SOMAmer reagents were incorporated into single molecule array (Simoa)-based assays in place of traditional detection antibodies for six cytokine targets. Optimization and validation were conducted for TNF-α as a demonstration using a capture antibody/detection-SOMAmer detection scheme to highlight the performance of this approach.

Long-term ungulate exclusion reduces fungal symbiont prevalence in native grasslands.

When symbionts are inherited by offspring, they can have substantial ecological and evolutionary consequences because they occur in all host life stages. Although natural frequencies of inherited symbionts are commonly <100 %, few studies investigate the ecological drivers of variation in symbiont prevalence. In plants, inherited fungal endophytes can improve resistance to herbivory, growth under drought, and competitive ability.

Stage-specific changes in GDNF expression by rat Sertoli cells: a possible regulator of the replication and differentiation of stem spermatogonia.

In the adult testis, the precise control of the self-renewing replication and differentiation of stem spermatogonia is fundamental to male fertility. Previous studies have shown that the replication of A single (A(s)) spermatogonia, a population that includes the stem cells, is maximal at stage I of the cycle of the rat seminiferous epithelium and minimal at stage VII, while the ratio of A-paired spermatogonia to A(s) spermatogonia increases from stages I to VII. It has been hypothesized that these changes in A(s) spermatogonia replication and differentiation result from changes in the expression of glial cell-line derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) by Sertoli cells.

[Effectiveness of pre-emptive hemodialysis with high-flux membranes for the treatment of life-threatening alcohol poisoning].

Alcohol intoxication (methanol, ethanol and ethylene glycol) may result in metabolic acidosis with increased anion gap, increased serum osmolal gap, and neurologic abnormalities ranging from drunkenness to coma, and death. The mortality and morbidity rates remain very high despite intensive care therapy. The toxicity of methanol and ethylene glycol is clearly correlated to the degree of metabolic acidosis.

Peritoneal dialysis in the comprehensive management of end-stage renal disease patients with liver cirrhosis and ascites: practical aspects and review of the literature.

The treatment of cirrhotic patients with ascites and end-stage renal disease is complex, due mainly to decreased effective arterial volume and hemodynamic instability. Peritoneal dialysis as a continuous therapy represents an alternative to hemodialysis-related intolerance. We report on our experience and that of others with cirrhotic patients with ascites treated by peritoneal dialysis.

Disregulated influenza A virus-specific CD8+ T cell homeostasis in the absence of IFN-gamma signaling.

Recent studies indicate that IFN-gamma may influence both the expansion and the trafficking of virus-specific CD8+ CTL, though the effects are not necessarily consistent for different models of viral and bacterial disease. Influenza A virus infection of mice deficient for IFN-gamma (IFN-gamma(-/-)) or deficient for the IFN-gamma receptor 1 (IFNGR1(-/-)) was, when compared with the wild-type (WT) B6 controls, associated with increased Ag-specific CD8+ T cell counts in the spleen and mediastinal lymph nodes. At the same time, fewer of these CTL effectors were found in the bronchoalveolar lavage population recovered from the IFN-gamma(-/-) mice.

Virus-specific CD8+ T cells in the liver: armed and ready to kill.

Influenza A virus infection of C57BL/6 mice is a well-characterized model for studying CD8+ T cell-mediated immunity. Analysis of primary and secondary responses showed that the liver is highly enriched for CD8+ T cells specific for the immunodominant H2D(b)NP(366-374) (D(b)NP(366)) epitope. Functional analysis established that these liver-derived virus-specific CD8+ T cells are fully competent cytotoxic effectors and IFN-gamma secretors.

Effect of isolation measures on the incidence and prevalence of hepatitis C virus infection in hemodialysis.

Background: Nosocomial transmission of hepatitis C virus (HCV) in hemodialysis (HD) units is well established. In units with a high prevalence of HCV infection, the implementation of universal precautionary measures may not suffice in order to decrease the incidence and prevalence of HCV. In this setting strict isolation practices can be useful in order to achieve this goal.

[Nephropathia caused by hantavirus puumala: a case report].

We present a patient from Germany with Hantavirus infection, admitted in the Emergency room of our hospital, with fever, thrombocytopenia, acute renal failure, oliguria, mild proteinuria and hematuria. Percutaneous renal biopsy revealed an acute interstitial nephritis without medulla haemorrhages. The virus infection confirmation was made by detection of IgM against Hantavirus Puumala.

Effector CD8+ T cells recovered from an influenza pneumonia differentiate to a state of focused gene expression.

The restriction of influenza A virus replication to mouse respiratory epithelium means that this host response is anatomically compartmentalized, on the one hand, to sites of T cell stimulation and proliferation in the secondary lymphoid tissue and, on the other hand, to the site of effector T cell function and pathology in the pneumonic lung. Thus, it is hardly surprising that virus-specific CD8(+) T cells recovered by bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) from the infected respiratory tract seem more "activated" in terms of both cytolytic activity and cytokine production than those cells isolated from the spleen. The present analysis uses Affymetrix microarray technology to compare profiles of gene expression in these two lineage-related, yet anatomically separate, lymphocyte populations.

[Influence of early or late referral to nephrologist over morbidity and mortality in hemodialysis].

Objective: We studied the influence of early vs late referral to nephrologist of patients with chronic renal failure over clinical situation at the onset of hemodialysis and outcome.

Subjects And Methods: From january 1994 to december 1998, 139 patients started hemodialysis for end-stage renal disease at the Hospital General de Albacete, all of them included in the study and clinical follow-up concluded in december 2001. Patients with rapidly progressive glomerulonephritis were excluded.

Use of neural networks for dosage individualisation of erythropoietin in patients with secondary anemia to chronic renal failure.

The external administration of recombinant human erythropoietin is the chosen treatment for those patients with secondary anemia due to chronic renal failure undergoing periodic hemodialysis. The goal is to carry out an individualised prediction of the erythropoietin dosage to be administered. It is justified because of the high cost of this medication, its secondary effects and the phenomenon of potential resistance which some individuals suffer.
